I mentioned this interview to @mjdoc90 earlier. Naturally I had to go look it up and watch it again. It still gives me the giggles.
LAVINIA: It's pretty grand. MATTHEW: You'd better get used to it. It'll be your home one day. LAVINIA: I'm not sure 'home' would ever be quite the word to describe it.
"The war has presented a new set of difficulties for him," said Stevens, the man behind Matthew. "In the first series, we saw his life turned upside down, being uprooted from his life in Manchester and brought into this new world... Aside from being horrific and stressful, one of the difficult things [about the war] is actually coming back to Downton. So we see him trying to reevaluate his life in Downton all over again. ... The backstory that we vaguely put together is that he would have come back on leave, met this girl in London - the daughter of a lawyer, someone much more from his pool - and then, he probably would have come back on leave again, and maybe proposed on that second meeting. He feels that she's more from his background so she'll understand, and yet, he takes her up to Downton and freaks her out a little bit. "I think the answer is that he has and hasn't moved on. In real life, the war did have a tendency to accelerate certain situations as people didn't know if they'd be alive next Thursday so they would get engaged to these young women they'd met on leave. There was no time for three year romances, these guys wanted to know that at the end of the war, they'd come home and marry their sweetheart. That kind of solace is not really what Mary was offering. In Lavinia, he's found a really lovely girl - the kind of girl he would have married if he never went to Downton in the first place, and I think it's an attempt to press reboot and get back to the simpler life he wanted to have, even though it'll be at Downton. So now he tries to initiate her into the ways of Downton very much the way Robert did with him in season one.
