The Gateway Arch recognizes the beginning of the Lewis and Clark Expedition near St. Louis, Missouri and the western migrations that began shortly afterwards.  The stainless steel-clad catenary arch is located on the western bank of the Mississippi River, opening west towards downtown St. Louis and the direction of 19th-century migration.  

Composed in a designed landscape, the Arch and its grounds were designed by two masters of Modern design: architect Eero Saarinen and landscape architect Dan Kiley.  The Modern Style is reflected in their simple yet bold geometric patterns, and in the use of modern materials, such as steel, concrete, and a restrained plant palette.  

Begun in 1959 and completed in 1976, the monument is currently receiving a rehabilitation treatment for rejuvenation.
