When I was a boy, I was always afraid of the threat of nuclear war (even tried to dig a bomb shelter, but that's another story). The I saw Planet of the Apes! This scene at the end opened my little mind to the possibilities of science fiction and post apocalyptic fiction. These genres have remained favourites of mine since the early 70s. I think Planet of the Apes is a good place for you to start.
