Ram Island Light, Boothbay Harbor, Maine. When raising sheep was more popular, islands were a great place to keep them and not have to build a fence. Rams were kept to their own islands most of the year to control the breeding population. Rams once resided on this island, located at the mouth of the Damariscotta River, but today it's just the lighthouse. If you're looking to visit, just make sure you've got the right one. There's also Ram Island Ledge Light in Casco Bay, and 28 other Ram Islands in the state.

Maine became the 23rd U.S. state on March 15, 1820.
