Story:

He was taught as a kit that if you had nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all. It was bullshit, but it was drilled into his head, especially the part where you shouldn’t say anything mean to someone you love.

When that become difficult, he was taught to find outlets so that the frustration didn’t consume him. When he became an apprentice, that outlet became hunting.

When his mentor was being difficult, a normal thing, he was told, when they were still getting used to their apprentice, he would sneak out at night. It also worked to enhance his skill, which was often what had his mentor annoyed with him in the first place.

He passed his assessment with flying colours, and soon after becoming a warrior, he became mates with fellow young warrior, Daisystalk. 

He loved her. 

That’s why he didn’t want to hurt her.

She was good, great, but every relationship has their arguments, and Daisystalk always had to be right. If she wasn’t, she would give him the silent treatment until he apologized.

It drove him crazy!

He hunted more often, leading to more arguments because he was out so much. It got to the point where, when he caught a squirrel, he tore it apart where it was, sending bits flying.

He was caught by one of his Clanmates, who berated him for wasting prey.

Yes, wasting prey was bad. So why not kill another to make up for it? 

He left the body where it was. A fox had recently been scented in the territory, so even if it didn’t eat the body before it was found, the Clan would just assume it did it.

Every irk and stress that strained Raggedrunner’s body smoothed away. He went home, apologized to Daisystalk, and shared a meal with her.

For the next moons, years, in fact, he would repeat the process. She would annoy him, he would go out and kill someone, and then he would return feeling better and they would make up.

It kept the peace, and even better, kept him from hurting her. 

It was a good life, the secret and the known.

But maybe he should have done something about that fox.

--Daisystalk was pregnant with his kits when he died.

--They only chased off the fox, didn’t kill it, and it later returned to kill him.
