Rush Series Masterlist
----------
After a well-deserved holiday break, youâre back at University of Paradis to start your spring semester. Along with your new and more rigorous curriculum, your obligations to your sorority escalate. No longer a pledge and a now a fully-fledged sister, you take a more active role in your organization by trying to recruit potential members. Spring rush begins two weeks into the new year for women and men interested in Greek life. Because of the partnership with Alpha Tau, Sigma Nu Kappa miraculously sees an increase in their numbers. By the end of the month, you welcome an exciting group of new sisters, ready to dive into the mysterious allure of sorority life.Â
Alpha Tau, back in its good graces, continues to excel during recruitment, despite losing a few members the previous semester. Reiner was expelled shortly after Eren. Apparently he threw a hissy fit in front of Erwin and Levi, who confronted him about his disrespectful behavior. Bertolt, being the obedient devotee he is, actually quit following his best friendâs expulsion. Rumor has it theyâve been âadoptedâ as unofficial brothers into another frat, the one where their friends Porco and Marcel are in.Â
The first few months of the new year are ordinary, for the most part. The only major difference is that Eren Jaeger has become a regular part of your daily life.
Following the end of your intimate relationship with him and his expulsion from Alpha Tau, Eren quickly got his act together. He focused on his studies more, spending hours in the library next to Armin, buried in his textbooks or typing away at a paper. You didnât see him much during those last few weeks, only in passing, walking alongside his best friend. Cordial waves from a distance were always exchanged. Even from afar, it was difficult to ignore the twinkle in his eyes or the goofy grin whenever he saw you.Â
It's not until this new year that Eren makes his official return into your life.Â
The golden trio of Eren, Armin, and Mikasa are in tandem again, hanging out constantly as if their temporary setback never occurred. Youâre included in the mix now, being Mikasaâs closest friend, roommate, and sorority sister. Jean occasionally joins if he isnât busy with soccer team business. You and Eren acknowledge one another as acquaintances do. A smile, a wave, a glance here and there. Nothing more. Careful not to overstep any boundaries. Thereâs no tension between you two; rather thereâs remnants of a barely lit flame still present from your previous relationship. Itâs unpredictable when it will ever fizzle out.Â
You share meals together, surrounded by your friends, never alone. You have conversations as a group, not with each other. The most youâll say is a hello or hi, along with a lingering look. Thereâs an unspoken agreement there; he wonât cross any lines until youâre ready to. At this rate, youâre taking baby steps to get to that point. You want to take your time with him.
Despite keeping your metaphorical distance, you find yourself learning more each day you spend with him. His interests, his pet peeves, his little quirks that you secretly find charming. Over dinner one night, you discover that Eren has a sweet tooth, finishing two different slices of cake in one sitting without a single crumb or smattering of frosting left on his plate. Another night, Mikasa teases him about being a mamaâs boy, which he shamelessly agrees with.Â
âSheâs the most important woman in my life,â he says proudly to Mikasa. âBesides you and â âÂ
He cuts himself off, not finishing his statement. For a split second, his eyes quickly dart towards you, cheeks blushed with a rosy tinge. Maybe itâs your imagination.Â
They reminisce about their past often, having spent their entire childhoods together. Through passing comments, you learn that Eren has always cared deeply for his friends. As a child, he was the first to throw a punch whenever Armin was harassed by the neighborhood bullies. The only kid on the block who would defend Mikasa from perverted old men eyeing her on the street. Even protecting his mom from being mugged several times on simple trips to the grocery store.Â
Youâre beginning to see for yourself what Mikasa told you last semester. I wish you could have met him before all of this. You would see how great of a person he can be. Thereâs a reason his friends have stuck by him through thick and thin. Theyâve put their trust and faith in him because of the lengths heâs gone for them. You wonder if youâll ever be able to get to that point with him. A tiny part of you hopes so.
You learn that Armin and Eren share a fascination for traveling. During a study session in the library, they huddle during their breaks to read a couple different travel magazines they purchased at the cafĂŠ. Eren takes great care to highlight and place post-it notes on pages he finds particularly interesting. A few times, he glances over at you, catching your gaze on him. The moment dissipates as quickly as it appears, a fading ember in heavy rain. Somethingâs there, both of you too hesitant and shy to nurture it.
In the blink of an eye, March arrives. The flower gardens scattered throughout campus are in full bloom. Displays of different colored flora along every pathway illuminate your daily walks to class. The melancholy that winter naturally emanates has finally passed. Life is good.Â
Itâs this month that your relationship with him changes. Itâs small, but definitely noticeable.Â
~~~
In the middle of March, the weekend preceding midterms, the four of them gather in a study room. Mikasa and Armin review biology flashcards, sheâs finishing up a permitted cheat sheet for one of her courses, and Eren focuses on writing an essay for his sociology class. After typing his last thought, he closes his laptop and leans back in his chair, sighing.Â
Mikasa sets down her flashcards. âLetâs take a break.â She reaches into her bag and fetches a bag of chips, setting it in the middle to share.Â
âSpeaking of a break, what is everyone doing for spring break? Itâs coming up,â Armin reminds them.Â
âJean invited me to stay with his family. We might go camping,â Mikasa replies.Â
âThat sounds fun! Grandpa will probably want to go fishing, so Iâll be doing that,â Armin says. âEren, what do the Jaegers have planned this year?â
He grabs a handful of chips as he answers, âWeâll be at the beach house. I canât believe Mikasa will be missing my birthday just because she has a boyfriend now,â he teases her, smirking.Â
She rolls her eyes. âA week away from Zeke bragging about med school and taking over your dadâs practice? Oh yeah, poor me,â she responds sarcastically, returning his playful grin.Â
âWhen is your birthday?â
Heâs startled to hear her voice. To hear her direct a question at him. Itâs an invitation to engage in a real conversation, which flusters and thrills him.Â
He faces her, hoping his cheeks arenât flushed. âMarch 30th.â
âMust be nice having it during spring break. Iâm sure youâll have fun.â
He gulps loudly, excited to continue talking to her. âYeah, it is nice. What areâŚwhat are your plans?â Mikasa and Armin stare at them as if theyâre watching a slow-moving tennis match, heads turning towards whoever is speaking, holding their breaths.Â
She shrugs, reaching for the snacks. âProbably just stay home and do some spring cleaning. My family doesnât really go on vacations.â
Thereâs a rush of ideas bombarding him, the most obvious being the temptation to invite her. Itâs insane. But the thought of spending spring break together is a dream. Itâs been over three months since they ended their previous relationship. Over three months of secretly pining for her, waiting for whatever chance he can get to be a little bit closer. Â
Itâs on the tip of his tongue. Whatâs the worst that could happen if he let it slip? Rejection? Bruised ego? Extreme embarrassment? Thatâs nothing compared to heartache, and heâs already experienced that. He has nothing to lose.Â
Still, he has to put her first. He wouldnât want to do or say anything to make her uncomfortable. Thatâs why itâs taken this long for them to have a legitimate conversation with each other, outside of their usual greetings. He wasnât sure if she wanted to speak to him, especially after all that happened.Â
Mikasa intervenes. âAnnie doesnât live too far from you. Iâm sure you two can see each other if youâre bored.â
âOh yeah! She mentioned wanting to try a new restaurant near where I live, so weâll probably do that.â
Eren comes to his senses, mentally calming himself down from his sudden excitement. He canât invite her to the beach house with him. Thatâs crazy. Outrageous. Definitely a bad idea. Baby steps, he reminds himself. Baby steps. âThat should be fun. I hope you have a nice break.â
âThank you. You too.â
They gaze at each other for what seems like a full minute; in reality, itâs a few seconds. Thereâs electricity, even if it is a slightly dulled. It could be wishful thinking on his end, but these are the tiny interactions heâs learned to cherish these past few months. Heâll take whatever he can get; a warm glance, courteous wave, her signature bright smile that instantly lifts his mood. He wonât take any of it for granted anymore.Â
Armin clears his throat. âAnyways, it sounds like weâre all going to have a nice vacation.âÂ
His friends engage her in idle chit chat about Greek life, leaving Eren alone in his thoughts. Another layer in their complicated relationship has been peeled away. Thereâs a long way to go, but itâs progress. It gives him hope.
He treasures these moments. This, along with the little details heâs learned about her so far. What she likes, what annoys her, those adorable habits she has. They spent so much time indulging in sex last fall that they didnât get to know each other properly. He enjoys exploring her mind and soul just as much as her body; maybe more if thatâs even possible. Â
Their passionate nights reappear in Erenâs head every now and again. Probably more than heâll ever admit. Out of respect, he tries his best not to think of her in that way anymore. Though when heâs alone in the deepest confines of his psyche, he canât help letting his hands wander, wishing more than anything itâs her in bed with him. He allows himself this occasional weakness for the sake of his sanity.Â
Tonight, he lets himself succumb to it, more so than ever these past three months. She actually spoke to him, and she was the one to initiate it. Itâs glorious, and hours later, heâs still high from it. Why is he so desperate? As Eren slides his boxers off to stroke his hard cock, body hidden beneath the blankets in case Armin returns any minute, he ignores the guilt and lets his desires overtake him.Â
He fantasizes about a scenario where she does spend spring break with him and his family. They would drive to the beach house, top down in a rented convertible, wind blowing through their hair. Fingers entwined, resting on the center console, natural for two people in love.Â
At the beach house, Eren would make proper introductions to his parents. His mom would be ecstatic to see her son with a woman, especially one as beautiful as her. Zeke, his half-brother, would arrive later for dinner, cocky as usual during table conversation. Probably flirtatious with her, attempting to push his little brotherâs buttons. This wouldnât bother Eren, because at the end of the night, itâs him who bends her over at the edge of the bed, pleasuring her until theyâre both spent. Cuddling and falling asleep in each otherâs arms, in total bliss.Â
Sheâd make the best impressions on his parents, helping his mom in the kitchen, offering to help his dad fix a few loose boards on the deck. Pretending to be intrigued by Zekeâs insufferable stories of med school. Theyâd relax by the ocean every day, basking in the pleasant heat from the sun. At night, theyâd make love, indulging in each otherâs warm bodies. Her silky moans music to his ears as she wraps her legs around his waist, wanting to feel him deeper. Her moans turn into whines, indicating heâs hitting that sweet spot. He thrusts into her faster, wanting her to gush all over him, thumb brushing against her puffy clit that he licked and sucked earlier when she rode his face. Sheâs so close, desperate to have her precious cunt filled with his hot loadâŚ
His cock twitches in his fist, cum dribbling onto his bare abdomen. He opens his eyes and heâs in his bedroom, hidden beneath his covers. Thereâs a box of tissues at his bedside, conveniently. He wipes any evidence and tosses it into the trash, thankful that Armin takes unusually long showers.
After a few minutes of lying in bed, he buries his face into his pillow, groaning. He hates when that post-nut clarity hits. It brings him shame, guilty for using her as a way to get himself off. He didnât even recall a past scenario this time; he invented a new one.Â
He answers the question he asked himself earlier:Â Why is he so desperate?
Heâs in love with her. Thatâs why.Â
~~~
The rest of the semester passes without any major issues. The frequency in which you converse with Eren increases at a steady rate. He cracks jokes here and there, nothing vulgar or inappropriate. The conversations are never too deep, enough to scratch the surface and uncover a valuable cache of knowledge about each other. Itâs surprisingly easy talking to him; youâre building up to being more than acquaintances with an intricate past.Â
With finals around the corner, you find yourself once again in a study room with Mikasa, Armin, and Eren. Mikasa and Armin group in front of a whiteboard, reviewing diagrams and terminology for their biology class. Eren is writing yet another sociology research paper. And youâre in the middle of a practice test for one of your courses.Â
Eren closes his laptop, raising his arms up in a stretch. âAnybody want anything from the cafĂŠ?â
Mikasa and Armin, too focused on their discussion, wave him off. He turns to you, offering, âDo you want anything?â
Distracted by a question that youâre desperately trying to solve, you mumble a name of a drink, your usual. A few minutes later, you come up with the solution and finally relax. Itâs only now that you realize you only gave him half the details of what you wanted. Thinking itâs too late to specify any of it, you let it be, not wanting to be a bother.Â
When he returns, he sets his drink next to his laptop. Probably a black coffee, his typical order. He hands you yours, which seems normal.
âThank you,â you tell him. âLet me know how much I owe you.â
âNah, donât worry about it. Itâs on me. I hope I got your drink right.â
Certain that he didnât, by no fault of his own, you examine the sticker on the cup listing the precise details. To your surprise, itâs perfect. From the amount of ice, type of milk, even the extra pump of the particular sweetener you like.Â
Impressed, you exclaim, âItâs exactly how I order it! Howâd you know?â
He rubs the nape of his neck, blushing. âYou get it so much, I guess it stuck with me.â
You beam at him, flattered that he memorized your relatively complicated order. He thought it was important to remember. It makes you feel special. With a sip of the drink, you take a deep breath, exhaling happily. âItâs absolutely perfect. Thank you.â
Cheeks still pink, he responds, âItâs really nothing.â
There it is again. That spark. A blaze that burns just barely, enough to provide light and warmth in a dim, dark place. Itâs amazing how something so simple, so seemingly insignificant, can do that. You do your best to suppress these emotions, knowing all too well that thereâs a long way to go when it comes to you and Eren. That doesnât mean you canât appreciate the progress.Â
The next few hours continue, the four of you concentrated on your own studies. When the sun sets, you gather your belongings and head to the dining hall to eat.    Â
The topic of summer vacation comes up. Mikasa is already aware of your plans, but you decide to announce it to Armin and Eren.Â
âIâll be staying on-campus. Iâm required to complete one summer session for my major so that I can graduate on time.â
Armin says, âReally? Eren, arenât you doing a summer session as well?â
This is brand new information. Mikasa also seems surprised by this. âYouâre going to be here for the summer too?â
Eren nods, eyes focused down at his plate. âYeah, I talked with Pyxis this week and he suggested that I do one to get in some extra classes. Told me itâs better for my resume when I apply to law school. He was able to pull some strings and get me enrolled last minute; I just found out yesterday.â
Mikasa, whoâs sitting next to you, squeezes your knee lightly underneath the table.
âI guess weâll both be here,â you murmur, unsure how else to react.Â
âYeah, I guess we will.â His expression is unreadable. For a split second, though, he smiles.Â
Later that night, with you and Mikasa ready for bed and snuggled under the covers, she turns to face you. âAre you going to be okay? Being here with Eren for the summer?â
âOf course. Itâs not going to change anything. Weâve been okay this whole semester.â
âYeah, but Armin and I arenât going to be here. Do you think youâll want to hang out with him? Alone?âÂ
You shrug. âI donât know. We havenât been alone together sinceâŚwell, you know. I donât know how awkward that will be.â
âYouâll both be at Reiss. All the students doing summer sessions are housed there.â
âSo? Whatâs your point?â
âLiving together in close quarters when nobody else is around to keep the two of you dummies in check? What do you think will happen?â
Rolling your eyes, you indulge her. âTell me.â
âYouâll fuck! The two of you will start fucking again!â
âMikasa, thatâs not going to happen. First of all, the apartments are big. Itâs not like weâll be next door neighbors. I probably wonât be seeing him much. And second, even if we do run into each other, weâll say our usual hellos, do some small talk, and thatâs it! What do you think weâve been doing the past few months. Everything is under control.â
âOh please. Donât think for a second that the little flirtations you and Eren have been exchanging are going unnoticed,â she reveals.
âWhat? We donât flirt!â
âOh really?â She sits up aggressively, mimicking you from earlier. âOh Eren, itâs perfect! How did you know?â In a second, she switches to Eren, copying his deep voice, âI donât know baby. Just stuck with me I guess. Want to touch my abs now?â
You throw a pillow at her, unable to contain your laughter. âShut up! Thatâs not what we sounded like!â
âThatâs exactly how you sounded,â she teases, tossing it back to you. âItâs obvious he still has feelings for you.â
âI donât know about that â â
âAnd I know you still have feelings for him, too. Neither of you will ever admit it, but we all know.â
Shocked by her accusation, you sputter, âHuh? Thatâs notâŚhow do youâŚâ
âWeâre sisters. Of course I know.â
You remain silent, neither confirming nor denying her suspicions. It wouldnât matter anyways with how confident she sounds.Â
âIâm not saying you two shouldnât reconnect. To be honest, it seems like Eren is back to his normal self, before his whole wannabe fuck boy phase. I want to make sure that youâre ready to take that next step. If thatâs what you really want.â
âI donât know what I want yet. Weâre taking it slow. Thereâs no rush.â
âAnd thatâs great. I donât doubt that youâll continue to succeed in that. But Iâm sure there will come a time that youâll be tempted to revisit those intimate moments the two of you share. If you do go through with it, do it because you want to. Not because youâre lonely, desperate, or pressured. Do it because it feels right in your heart.âÂ
You let her advice sink in. She adds, âIf you ever need someone to talk to, you know Iâm always a phone call away.â
In the dim light, you can see her sincere eyes gazing at you. âThank you,â you tell her, promising telepathically to heed her words of wisdom.Â
The discussion ends there, leaving it up to you to decide when the âright timeâ is. Or if there will ever be a âright timeâ.Â
One thing is for sure: this summer is already more interesting because of Eren Jaeger.
At the end of the semester, the seniors graduate in the standard pomp and circumstance ceremony. You exchange tearful goodbyes to your favorite graduates, promising to keep in touch. Hange makes you swear to visit her at Marley School of Medicine, while Petra promises to stop by whenever sheâs in the area. The candy leis you, Mikasa, and Sasha spent the previous night crafting are distributed to all the Sigma Nu Kappa seniors, even some Alpha Tauâs, including Levi, Erwin, and of course, Mike. You give him an especially fond smooch on the cheek.Â
With the school year officially over, most of Paradisâs students pack up and go home. Annie and Hitch agree to stay an extra day to help you move into the on-campus apartments called Reiss Residence, open specifically for students staying for the summer. It takes at least two hours to haul your belongings across campus to your new home. Being on the second floor of the complex with an elevator that operates at a snailâs pace contributes to the difficulty. Once your stuff is inside, you unpack, dragging boxes up the stairs into one of the empty bedrooms. Downstairs is a living room space furnished with a couch and coffee table. Thereâs also a little kitchen, complete with all the essential appliances to cook. Unfortunately, you donât have any pots or pans to actually prepare a meal, so you pray that your roommate moves in with those items in her possession.Â
Exhausted from the move and too lazy to walk over to the dining hall, you call a local pizza shop to get dinner delivered directly to your doorstep, treating your friends for helping you during this tiring process. In the middle of your meal, you hear a knock on your door.
âRA knocking! Anyone in there?â When you open it, a tall, well-built man stands in front of you with a clipboard. âHi! Iâm Onyankopon, your new RA.â
You introduce yourself, smiling as you shake hands.Â
âWelcome to Reiss. My room is downstairs, #101. Knock anytime you need anything. If Iâm not in, feel free to call me.â He gives you a sheet of paper listing general rules and information for the complex. He points at the number typed on the bottom next to his name.
âI see youâre pretty much moved in. I just need to get you checked-in with a date and a signature.â He presents you the clipboard and a pen. You scan it quickly for your name, signing it when you find it. Not bothering to check the rest of the list, you return it to him.Â
âAwesome, thanks. Has your roommate moved in?â
âNo, not yet.â
âThatâs okay. Iâll come by tomorrow again to check. Some students are coming in tomorrow, even later this week since classes donât start until Monday. Iâm planning to have a little welcoming party in my room Sunday night to introduce everyone. Iâll post the details on the bulletin next to the laundry room on this floor.â
âSounds great. Looking forward to it,â you tell him, genuinely excited.
âDonât hesitate to contact me if you need anything!â With that, he waves goodbye, leaving to knock on the rest of the doors on your floor.Â
Back inside, Annie says, âHe seems nice.â Â
âAnd hot,â Hitch smirks. âArenât RAs for these apartments usually grad students? You should try older men for a change,â she teases with a wink.
You roll your eyes. âI donât think heâll be interested in an undergrad if he really is a grad student.â
âHey, you never know unless you try! How hot would that be, sex with the RA? This stuff doesnât write itself.â
You laugh, half considering her suggestion because sheâs not wrong: your new RA is very attractive. However, youâre still taking time to focus on yourself and avoid potential drama. If that means remaining celibate the rest of the summer, then thatâs the route youâll have to continue taking.Â
âArmin told me that Eren is also going to be here. Is that going to be weird for you?â Annie asks, finishing off her slice of pizza.Â
âI donât know. We probably wonât see much of each other unless we literally live right next door, which isnât going to happen.â
âThink youâll try to hang out with him one-on-one? I mean, you practically saw each other every day the past few months.â
âThatâs different; weâre always with Mikasa and Armin. Thereâs a buffer.â
âDo you even want to hang out with him? As friends?â
Itâs definitely crossed your mind. Mikasaâs words have been replaying constantly the past couple of days. Do it because it feels right in your heart.
You havenât seen him since the last study session, and the thought of running into him any minute now has you flustered. Is it worry? Or excitement?Â
âI donât think Iâm there yet,â you respond, remaining ambiguous.
Instead of continuing to pester you, they drop it, changing the subject to Eta Iota gossip going around about one of Hitchâs sisters hooking up with anotherâs boyfriend. You listen passively, your focus still on Eren.Â
Given your history, it might be dangerous to be alone together. Youâd be lying to yourself if you said your intimate memories with him have never reappeared in your thoughts. They pop up in your head, particularly at night when you need some sort of sweet release.Â
Hanging out, without Mikasa and Armin there to regulate, is a big step. Will you ever get there with him? Can you ever be friends?Â
The next morning, you eat breakfast with Hitch and Annie at the cafeteria before they leave for home. Back at your apartment, you notice the door is open, boxes stacked and scattered around the living room. You hear shuffling upstairs and a girlâs voice talking to someone on speaker phone. You knock on the open door loudly to announce your presence.Â
A girl with light-brown hair in a ponytail comes sprinting down the stairs, smiling. âRoomie!â She launches herself towards you to give you a big hug. âIâm Hannah! Nice to meet you!â
You return her embrace and introduce yourself, making small talk while you help her move her things to her bedroom. Throughout the day, you learn that she is cheerful and easy-going. She mentions her boyfriend Franz, who she warns will be coming over quite often, to which you assure her that you donât mind.Â
When sheâs unpacked, the two of you walk to the store right off campus to pick up groceries and snacks. That night, you cook your first meal in the kitchen. Luckily, Hannah comes prepared with kitchenware, offering to share it as long as you clean it after use.Â
Friday, Hannah decides to spend the weekend with Franz once more before the session begins, leaving you alone in the apartment. You sleep in, taking advantage of the few days left of your tiny break.Â
Around noon, your growling stomach gets you out of bed. In your comfiest sweats, you leave your apartment. For the first time this week, you notice the door next to yours is open. Outside is a middle-aged woman with long black hair in a loose ponytail hanging over her shoulder. There are clothes scattered over the pavement surrounding her as she carries an empty laundry basket. Immediately, you bend down to pick up some of the littered fabric.Â
âAh, thank you, dear. Iâm such a klutz,â she giggles, squatting to help. âThese are clean, donât worry.â
You chuckle, giving her a pair of sweatpants. The two of your collect the last few items off the ground. âI hope I didnât take too much time out of your day!â she says.Â
âNot at all. I was just on my way to get lunch. Iâm in no rush. Happy to help.â
âIâm relieved to know my son is living next to someone as sweet as you. Thank you again for all your help.â
Her appreciation for such a simple act is endearing. She seems like such a lovely woman. You smile at her, reiterating how it wasnât a big deal when you hear someone walk towards you from behind. Â
You turn to check who it is, almost choking when you recognize that itâs Eren. He blinks rapidly as he stutters your name.Â
Somehow, some way, the universe has forced you two to be next door neighbors.
Erenâs mom glances at him, then at you. âOh, you two know each other? How nice! She was helping me pick up your laundry after I dropped it all on the ground.â
He steps towards his mother, grabbing the sides of the basket. âMom, I told you Iâd get that. Itâs heavy,â he states, carrying it easily. He glances at you before heading back inside his apartment to set the clothes down.Â
His mom asks you, âSo, you two are friends?â
What is the correct answer here? Youâre not quite sure yourself. Â
Eren quickly replies, âYes, weâre friends.â He smiles at you, then at his mom. Â
âOh good! I donât have to worry about my son being lonely this summer,â his mom teases, pinching one of his cheeks.
âMom,â Eren warns, waving her off lovingly. Itâs cute.Â
âYour dad should be here soon; he went to get gas after we unloaded all of your things from the car.â
âThatâs nice youâre here to help Eren move. I wish I had a car when I moved. We had to lug everything from across campus,â you explain, laughing.
âOh you poor thing. Next time, tell Eren to help you. As you can see, he has plenty of muscles,â she comments, squeezing his bicep.Â
âMom, seriously,â he mutters, hand shielding his face in embarrassment.
âHeâs so shy, isnât he?â she grins. Eren peeks at you between his fingers, a blush surrounding his cheeks.
His momâs phone chimes. âOh! Thatâs your father, letâs go sweetie.â
Youâre ready to part ways when you hear her suggest, âYou should come to lunch with us!â
Going to lunch with your former fuck buddyâs parents? And your former fuck buddy turned acquaintance slash friend? This is too weird. âNo, I donât want to intrude.â
âNonsense. Weâre inviting you.â
Expecting him to dissuade his mother, Eren agrees. âYeah, you should come with us. Itâll be fun.â His expression is warm and inviting. His eyes glisten with kindness. How can you decline an invite from both him and his mother?
âOhâŚum, okay. Thank you,â you relent, walking besides them.
âSilly me! I forgot to introduce myself. Iâm Carla,â she mentions, holding out her hand. You do the same as the three of you head downstairs. In the parking lot, you spot a maroon Subaru Hatchback running. A man with glasses sits in the driverâs seat.Â
âHoney, Erenâs friend here is going to join us for lunch!â Carla exclaims.
From inside the vehicle, you see him clap giddily. âExcellent! Hello Erenâs friend!â
Carla informs her husband of your name, to which he enthusiastically repeats. You grin at their quirkiness. From the corner of your eye, you see Eren smiling too.
~~~
Somehow, some way, the universe has blessed Eren.Â
He canât comprehend it. Heâs sitting in the back of the car next to her, the middle seat being the only distance between them, as his parents drive them to his favorite restaurant in the area. He literally pinches himself several times to believe itâs real.Â
His mom does most of the chatting during the ride. She asks the standard questions, most of which heâs already memorized about her. At the restaurant, which is a local diner with the best milkshakes, his dad joins in on the small talk. In typical Grisha Jaeger fashion, he brags about Zeke, whoâs currently in med school to take over the family business. This naturally prompts him to pat Eren on the back and proclaim, âBut Iâm also proud of my other son here, whoâs going to be a hot-shot lawyer one day! Hopefully he wonât ever be prosecuting me for medical malpractice!âÂ
Aside from his dadâs corny jokes, their lunch is as delightful as Eren could imagine it to be, under their current circumstances. All week, heâs been nervous about the status of their relationship this summer, if there even would be a relationship. Without Armin and Mikasa around, how would it be between them? The question has been nagging him since he decided to stay. And now, itâs been partially answered. Still, he wonders if theyâll ever be able to spend time together, just the two of them.
Back at the apartment, they gather in front of Erenâs room.Â
âThank you so much for lunch, Mr. and Mrs. Jaeger,â she says.Â
âOh please, the pleasure was all ours! We hope to see you again soon!âÂ
Eren eyes his mom, to which she announces, âGrisha, honey, letâs unpack some of Erenâs stuff in the kitchen.â Before his dad can get a word in, she drags him into the apartment, yelling out, âSweetheart, it was so nice to finally meet you. Please take good care of yourself!â He nearly flinches at his momâs slip-up. Thankfully, it goes unnoticed.Â
At last alone with her, he says, âThank you for joining us. That was fun. I hope it wasnât awkward for you or anything.â
âNo, it wasnât. Your parents are really nice. Thanks for letting me tag along.â
âAre you all unpacked?â he asks, eager to keep their exchange going.
âYeah, for the most part. I donât have too many things, so it wasnât so bad.â
âIâm the opposite. My mom made sure I packed everything. I might have to use the spare bedroom for storage.â
Her eyes light up at this statement. âYou donât have a roommate?â
âNope. Itâs just me,â he answers. âMy dad is going to help me move the other bed into my room to create a queen-sized bed.â
âThat sounds nice.â Thereâs a small pause before she adds, âMaybe we can hang out at your place. Not on the bed, Iâm not thinking that because of the bed, I thought that since you donât have a roommate, it might be nice to, yâknow, watch a movie or something, I donât know â â
He stops her rambling with a grin, âI get it. I wasnât thinking anything about it. But yeah, we should definitely do that. If itâs okay with you.â Calm, cool, collective. He has to appear this way as fireworks are nearly bursting out of his chest.
She nods, not explicitly responding to his last statement. âAnyways, Iâll let you get back to unpacking. Iâll see you around.â
Itâs too short. He wishes they could keep chatting forever and ever. âYeah, see you.â
She disappears into her apartment, leaving Eren to pinch himself one more time before joining his parents inside. In a daze, he removes some pans from the open box next to his mom, who looks at him curiously.Â
âHoney, Eren and I are going to unpack his clothes in his room. Can you finish the rest of these boxes down here?â
âYes, dear.â
Upstairs, Erenâs mom shuts the door and begins hanging his jackets in the closet. âSo, thatâs her.âÂ
Thereâs no secrets between him and his mom. Thatâs the type of relationship they have. When he fucked up last semester, he made sure to come clean about it as soon as he was home for winter break. And she made sure to give him a piece of her mind. Since then, she hasnât stopped.
âI canât believe you would do that to a sweet girl like her,â she continues, casually unfolding his laundry as she scolds him. âReally, Eren. I am still so disappointed in you.â
âI know, Mom. I know. I fucked up. I beat myself up about it every day.â
âI hope you do. Did you know that she would be next door?â
âOf course not. I knew she was staying at these apartments. I never predicted this. I mean, I jokingly wished for it. I didnât think itâd actually come true.â He canât help but smile to himself, feeling like the luckiest guy in the world.Â
She glares at him. âDonât get any ideas, son. You have to keep your distance. She might still be wary about you. I wouldnât blame her.â
âYeah, I know. I will. But when I told her I donât have a roommate, she said that we should hang out. I think sheâs ready to be friends.â
She stops what sheâs doing to look at him carefully. âHoney, are you sure about this?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âIsnât it time to move on? I know you still have feelings for her, but this is dangerous. You donât know if sheâll ever feel the same way about you again. Maybe this ship has sailed.â
He contemplates this for a while before saying, âMaybe. But if thereâs the tiniest chance, then Iâm wearing a life vest and swimming. Iâm not letting her go. Not yet.â
She stares at him, concerned. âYou like her that much?â
With full confidence, he answers, âIâm in love with her. I love her, Mom.â This is the first heâs confessing it out loud. Heâs surer of it now hearing it in his own voice.
âEren, youâre not even dating. You barely know her. Donât be ridiculous.â
âIâm not being ridiculous. I feel it in my heart, in my fucking soul. I canât stop thinking about her. Everything I do now is for her. To prove to her how worthy of a man I can be, worthy of her love. I wonât give up until the day she looks me in the eyes and tells me that itâs never going to happen. Maybe even then, I wonât give up. I know you probably think Iâm being immature or idiotic. But this is how I feel. I canât help it.â
âHoney, I hear you, and Iâm not trying to invalidate your feelings. But are you prepared to get hurt if this doesnât work out the way you want it to?â Thereâs urgency in her voice, almost like sheâs pleading with him to reconsider this. To give up, for his own sake.Â
He wonât. This is the most certain heâs ever been in his life.Â
âIf that means Iâm going to get hurt, then fine. Itâll be worth it to have felt something than nothing at all.â
~~~
Sunday night, your RA hosts a gathering in his slightly larger apartment on the first floor. Hannah isnât back from her boyfriendâs, so you arrive alone. You meet a few of the other residents as you help yourself to a slice of pizza and a drink. Onyankopon gathers everyone in a circle to play a little ice-breaker game. Just as heâs about to start, Eren walks in.Â
âSorry Iâm late,â he mumbles.
âNo worries, man! Go ahead and take a spot in the circle.â
You glance at him, waving, which he returns with a smile. He positions himself across from you, next to an auburn-headed guy you sort of recognize from one of the fraternities.Â
Onyankopon asks everyone in the circle state their name, year, major, organizations they are involved in on campus, and one interesting fact. He starts, explaining how he completed his bachelors at a school private school in Marley and is now working on his masters in aerospace engineering here at Paradis. Each resident clockwise has their turn to speak. When it gets to Eren, he shares that he has a big sweet tooth, which you already knew, and that he has finished an entire chocolate cake all by himself once in his lifetime, which you did not know.Â
After the event, you bid farewell to your RA and new neighbors. Outside, Eren walks slow, waiting for you. You catch up to him, greeting him with a, âHey.â
âHi. Are you ready for classes tomorrow? Feels like we barely had a break.â
âNot sure if Iâm ever really ready for classes. Oh well,â you chuckle. âDo you have an early morning class?â
âNo. Thankfully my earliest class is at 11, which isnât bad.â
âThatâs the same for me too! Itâll be nice to sleep in once in a while.â
âYeah, definitely.â Thereâs a pause. âMaybe we can get breakfast some time. If youâre up for it.â
You remember him being so against sharing a meal together in public not too long ago. And now, heâs offering the idea so easily. You canât help but tease him just a bit. âYou donât want to get it delivered?âÂ
He stops in his tracks. âHey, I didnâtâŚI wasnâtâŚIâm sorry I wasnât thinking â â
You nudge him in the arm with your elbow, laughing. âIâm messing with you. Breakfast sounds good.â
His face relaxes. âI deserve that.âÂ
âYeah, you do,â you smirk.
Itâs different this time around. It has to be.
~~~
The session starts and Eren, for the most part, has a handle on his courses. Without it being as rigorous as a regular semester, he spends a large chunk of his free time going to the gym, cooking in his kitchen, and watching Netflix on his flat-screen TV, courtesy of Dr. Grisha Jaeger.Â
Though the walls are thin, he barely hears a bump from his lovely neighbor. However, knowing sheâs there brings him happiness. Over the past few weeks, theyâve been getting comfortable chatting outside the apartment. Sometimes for a few minutes if either of them is in a rush to another destination, most of the time for nearly half an hour, neither in any rush to end it. He looks forward to stepping outside his apartment every day to get his daily dose of her. An instant serotonin boost.Â
One Friday night, well into the season, Eren sits on the couch in front of the TV, watching a K-drama heâs hooked on. He finished a bowl of pasta for dinner and is indulging in ice cream when he hears a knock on his door.Â
He cracks it open cautiously. To his delight, itâs her. âHi neighbor. Can I hang out here for a bit?â
It takes a while to process. Is he dreaming? He pulls himself together and opens the door for her, inviting her in. âIs everything okay?â
âYeah, Iâm fine. Itâs just that my roommate and her boyfriend are having a heated argument right now and Iâm almost certain itâs going to lead to some very loud and angry sex. I donât want to be there to listen to it.â She plops down on the couch. âI hope Iâm not bothering you.â
âNot at all. I was just watching TV. Do you want some ice cream?â
âSure!â
He rummages through his freezer, retrieving a particular carton of ice cream. As he scoops it into a bowl, she comments, âI didnât expect you to be a fan of K-dramas.â Sheâs looking at the paused screen on the television, an amused expression on her face.
He passes her the bowl and takes a seat on the opposite side of the couch, an appropriate distance for two ex-lovers to be in. âI recently got into it. I can see why people are so obsessed with them. Especially the romance ones.â
She takes a spoonful of ice cream into her mouth. âYum. This is my favorite. Thank you.â
Thereâs no point in revealing to her that he knows this already. She mentioned it once during spring semester. He wanted to try it himself, see why she adored it so much. Now, he always keeps a pint of it in his freezer. Not because he expects situations like this, but because he indulges in it himself to have the tiniest connection with her. It also helps that it is, in fact, yummy.
âSo Iâm guessing that you donât get along with your roommate?â he asks, finishing the last bites of his melting ice cream.
âWe get along fine. I just didnât expect her and her boyfriend to be so loud. Especially during sex. Itâs very distracting.â
âWhen youâre caught up in the heat of the moment, itâs easy to forget about everything and everybody else surrounding you,â he says. In the worst timing ever, he recalls their passionate nights, never holding back with each other.Â
She turns to look at him, a gleam in her eyes that sends his heart racing. âYeah. Youâre right.â
Is he imagining all of this? This pleasant vibe in the air?Â
He hastily grabs the remote and resumes the show, ending any more talk about sex. They finish the episode and watch one more before she deems it safe to return to her place.Â
âThanks again for letting me come over. And for the ice cream.â
âOf course. Iâm here anytime you need me.â The words slip out sooner than he can actually think it through. He panics, fearing he took a monumental step backwards.
Instead, she responds, âOkay. Iâll hold you to that.â Eren watches her leave and waits for the soft thud of her door shutting to close his.
Cheeks hot, perspiration beading on his forehead, he slides down the door and sits on the floor, burying his face in his sweaty palms.
His mom is right. This is dangerous.Â
~~~
The summer session is nearing the end. It goes by much faster than you expect. This is largely thanks to your next-door neighbor slash friend slash ex-lover Eren Jaeger. For a situation so complicated and messy, itâs been easy being with him, as friends.
Itâs gotten to a point where youâre at his apartment nearly every weekend, usually watching a random show or movie. Heâll offer you whatever meal he can whip up in the kitchen on the fly; other nights youâll order delivery or take-out from a local restaurant. And every dinner ends with three scoops of your favorite ice cream.Â
On some weekdays, youâll wake up early to get breakfast together at the dining hall. Youâve since unblocked his number from your phone, so either heâll text you, âBreakfast?â or youâll knock on his door, knowing heâs already awake.
Not wanting to make the same mistakes as last year, you tell your friends everything, to which you get plenty of opinions about from them. Annie in particular isnât shy to call you dumb for falling for the same trap again. In your defense, it doesnât feel stressful this time around. What do either you or Eren gain from spending time together, besides companionship? Without sex being involved, could the two of you truly become friends? At this rate, youâre confident that you can.Â
The Friday leading into finals, you leave the library close to 1 AM. You got caught up finishing a paper for one of your classes, not realizing how late it is. The walk to your apartment isnât far. However, being alone in the after-midnight darkness adds a level of creepiness that unsettles you. You slide your keys between your knuckles as a makeshift weapon and stroll directly under each lamp post for a sense of security.Â
When you arrive at the apartment complex, thereâs a figure slouched at the bottom of the staircase leading up to your floor. You recognize him as one of the residents of the apartments. As you pass him on the steps, he grabs your ankle.Â
âHey, can you help me?â His speech is slurred; heâs drunk.
Alarmed at his unwanted touch, you tug your foot away from him, muttering, âSorry. No.â You hustle up the stairs, hoping he stays slumped there.
You hear shuffling as he cries out, âCome on! I locked myself out! Public Safety is taking forever. Let me stay in your apartment for a bit.âÂ
Heâs on your tail. Nervous for him to see which apartment youâre living in, you stop in front of the laundry room, reaching for the phone in your pocket. âI said no. I donât know you.â
âIâm Floch. Iâve seen you around. Youâre a Sigma Nu Kappa. I bet youâre an easy fuck.â He grabs you by the wrist aggressively, causing you to drop your phone onto the ground.
âLet go of me asshole!â On instinct, you kick him between the legs, directly in the balls.
He grunts, doubling over, clutching his hopefully shattered jewels. âYou fucking bitch,â he spits out through gritted teeth.Â
Quickly, you retrieve your fallen phone and sprint to your room, desperate to hide from him. Shaking, you canât get your keys into the lock. From your peripheral, you see him get back up slowly, limping towards you, holding onto his crotch like some perverted zombie. You continuously press the lock button on your phone, attempting to trigger the SOS signal as he closes the distance.
Suddenly, the next door swings open and Eren hovers over Floch, growling, âWhat the fuck do you think youâre doing?â
Your assailant shrinks, waving his hands in front of him in a pathetic surrender. âWhoaâŚNothing man, I wasnât doing anything.â
âYou owe her an apology.â
âHuh? Sheâs the one who kicked my nuts â â
âDid I fucking stutter? Apologize to her. Right fucking now, dipshit.âÂ
âOkay, okay.â He peeks around Erenâs massive form to apologize. âIâm sorry.â
You donât speak, staring at them in a catatonic state.Â
Eren steps forward, towering over him. âNow get the fuck away from her and wait outside your own goddamn apartment. And if you bother her again, I wonât be so nice.â
Without another word, Floch hobbles off, heading upstairs to the third level.
Eren looks at you, expression switching immediately from outrage to concern. âAre you okay?â
Youâre still trembling as you nod. âYeah. IâmâŚIâm okay.â
âDid he hurt you?âÂ
âNo. I kicked him in the balls before he could do anything.â You turn the handle to open the door, which you finally manage to get unlocked. âThank you. That wasâŚcrazy.â
âYou donât have to thank me. I heard your voice from outside and I knew something was wrong. Iâm glad I came out when I did.â
âMe too.â For some reason, youâre nervous to look at him, so you keep your focus on the ground.Â
âAre you sure youâre okay?âÂ
âYeah, Iâll be fine. Thank you again.â
âIt was nothing. Seriously. Iâm here anytime you need me.â
You stand, frozen in place with fear and adrenaline coursing through your veins. Erenâs voice, despite being beside you, seems distant.
âYouâre shaking,â he notices, watching you carefully.
âYeah, Iâm justâŚI donât know. I wish my roommate was here. I donât want to be alone right now.â Unfortunately, Hannah decided last minute to study for finals at her boyfriendâs this weekend.
After a moment of contemplation, he says, âYou can stay at my place. Until youâre feeling better.â
âAre you sure? You donât feel weird about this?âÂ
âNo. Weâre friends. Right?â Itâs more of a question he wants confirmed, unsure himself.Â
You smile at him. âYes. Friends.âÂ
~~~
He leads her inside his apartment, waving over to the couch. âIâll be back. Iâm going to get a pillow and a blanket.â Â
Prior to heading into his bedroom, he goes into the bathroom, staring at his reflection in the mirror. Sheâs in his apartment in the middle of the night, and heâs almost certain she will be sleeping here. Sheâs scared and traumatized from that asshole who attacked her, and she didnât want to be alone, so he offered to help.Â
Has he crossed the line? Is this okay?
Back downstairs, he hands her a pillow and throw blanket. âHere you go. Let me know if you need anything else.âÂ
Heâs ready to march right upstairs, slam his door shut, and pretend that this is all totally normal. That heâs totally fine. This is what friends do. They help each other. And thatâs what they are now. Friends.
âWait.â
She looks at him, eyes precious, innocent, and sweet. Arms wrapped tightly around the pillow. It has him melting like ice cream on a hot summer day.Â
âCan youâŚstay with me a while?â
He swallows loudly, nervous and excited all at once. âOf course.â
She smiles softly, laying on the cushion with the blanket surrounding her. He kneels on the floor beside her, still in awe that this is happening.Â
âIt smells like you,â she says, nose pressed into the pillow.Â
He laughs. âIs that a good or a bad thing?âÂ
âGood. It smells good.â
Itâs too much. Heâs about to explode from glee. On the edge of the couch, he rests his arm, laying his head on it, gazing at her. He wants to brush the hair away from her forehead. Caress her delicate cheek with his hand. âAre you okay?â
âStill a little freaked out.âÂ
âWe should report it. Iâll let Onyankopon know now â â
âWe can talk to him in the morning. I donât want to be left alone right now.â Her hand sneaks out from under the covers, inches from his. Thereâs electricity flickering in the small space. It jolts throughout his body, firing synapses into his brain.Â
âCan I hold your hand?â she asks, voice trembling.
Heâs convinced heâs dreaming now. Thereâs no way this is happening. But it is. Sheâs here in front of him. As real as ever.
He hesitates, âAre you sure?âÂ
She nods, carefully sliding her hand over his.Â
Everything plays in slow motion. They press their palms together slowly, fingertips lined up perfectly, skin-on-skin igniting the ember that still remains from months ago. Savoring this moment before it gets taken away. Their fingers interlock, fitting seamlessly as if they belong exactly like this.
Breathless, he asks again, âAre you sure this is okay?â His whole body vibrates from the palpations overwhelming his chest, still in disbelief this is actually happening.Â
âYes, Eren.â Her voice is soft, supple. It soothes him, makes him feel at peace.Â
âI donât want to rush this.â
âMe neither.âÂ
They remain in this position for a while, cherishing it for all itâs worth. So much is communicated between them without speaking. Itâs in the eyes, their touch. The warmth that she emits, filling him up with euphoria he canât find elsewhere.
Itâs different this time. Itâs right. Heâll do everything in his power not to mess it up again. His word lost all value the second he used it against her. So instead of telling her how he feels, he has to show her. Prove to her that heâs no longer afraid.
~~~
âCan I show you something?â He looks at you tenderly, eyes sparkling like brilliant emeralds unearthed through the dust.Â
Curious, you agree, giving him your full attention, a flutter in your belly from the anticipation.Â
He places your palm over his chest, holding you gently against him. Through the cotton of his shirt, you feel his heart pounding hard and fast.Â
âThis is how I feel about you. This is what you do to me.â
You keep steady, relishing the rhythmic thumping of his heartbeat. Understanding exactly what heâs trying to convey to you.Â
The two of you were always lost in translation, unsure how the other felt, what the other wanted. You were on different pages, sometimes even in two different worlds. Somehow, someway, you are brought together again, now in the same orbit, revolving one other like the universe intended it.Â
Your story with Eren has already been written. It began at the start of fall semester, almost a year ago, and ended a few months later, before the bitter cold of winter. There are no rewrites, no rewinds to change the events that occurred. Mistakes were made, hearts were broken, a chance at love was lost. Far from a fairytale ending.
Maybe this is the beginning of the sequel, a story about two people who are far from perfect finding their way back to each other for one last shot. Picking up the shattered fragments to build something beautiful from the ground up, piece by piece. There may be cracks or missing parts throughout. In the end, maybe itâll be a masterpiece you can both be proud of, flaws and all.Â
----------
End Note: Thank you for all of you who have taken the time to read Rush the whole way through. Itâs been such a fun ride and I hope it was worth it. The love and support Iâve gotten throughout means so much to me, I canât thank you enough! I have a few ideas about what I want to write next, so stay tuned!Â
Summary: It might not be the right time. I might not be the right one. But thereâs something about us I have to say, âcause thereâs something between us anyway.
Notes: Thanks so much for all of those who have stuck with this story through the end. Nervous and excited to hear what you all think. Also, I know itâs cheesy, but I did use song lyrics for the summary because I I thought it was fitting. Song is âSomething About Usâ by Daft Punk.Â

Bam.Â
Erenâs knuckles collide with Reinerâs jaw, causing the latter to stumble into Bertolt, who catches him and shoves him back up to his feet. A trickle of blood seeps from the side of his mouth, a split lip forming from the punch. He wipes it with the back of his hand, a cocky smirk forming on his face, challenging. As soon as he advances, Eren pounces first, gripping his collar aggressively as he wrestles him into the ground.Â
âDonât fucking talk about her you fucking piece of shit!â he screams, spit flying from his mouth, a blind rage clouding his vision.
âEren!â Armin cries out, attempting to intervene.
Reiner glares at him with a wild expression, animalistic and violent. Almost snarling as he wraps his hands around Erenâs neck, nails digging into his throat, choking him. Thereâs a struggle between the two, Reiner getting the advantage momentarily as he rolls over on top. Erenâs fists are clenched around his big brotherâs shirt, trying to shove him off him as he fights for breath. Unable to escape, he shoves a knee into Reinerâs groin, resulting in him loosening his death grip and clutching his abdomen in pain.Â
Eren takes this chance to pin him against the floor again, yelling out repeatedly, âDonât fucking talk about her! Donât fucking talk about her!â
A crowd of brothers surround them, yelling and cheering, rowdy from the scuffle occurring in front of them. Armin enlists Jeanâs help, launching themselves into the crossfire to try to lift Eren off Reiner. Erwin and Levi break through and manage to drag a disheveled and slightly bloody Reiner away from Eren, who is still fighting to get his hands on him. Â
Once they are a safe distance away from each other, Erwinâs voice booms out, âWhat is the meaning of this?â
âWhy are you two shits fighting?â Levi asks, glaring at them.
âHe started it!â Reiner points at Eren, wiping the remaining blood off his mouth. âHeâs fucking crazy!â
âEren, explain yourself,â Erwin demands.
He remains silent, nostrils flaring as he breathes heavily, staring at Reiner with a ferocity overwhelming his body. With no response, Erwin sighs, frustrated. âChapter room. Now.â
He picks up Reiner by his armpits until heâs standing on his own, shoving him towards the stairs. Levi approaches Armin, saying, âCome with us. I need you to keep an eye on Eren while we talk to Reiner in private.â Armin nods, agreeing to help.Â
They follow them to the chapter room, where Erwin and Reiner enter, leaving the rest in the hall. âWait here,â Levi commands, disappearing into the room, shutting the door.
Eren slouches against the wall, burying his hands into his face, groaning. His head is heavy, the realization of what just occurred weighing him down. He stays like this for several minutes, almost forgetting that Armin is right beside him until he hears him speak, worry laced in his voice.
âEren, what happened?â he asks, sitting right beside him. âWhy did you do that?â
It takes a couple seconds for him to muster up the courage to reply to his friend. âArmin, I fucked up. Majorly fucked up. Iâm a fuck up.â
Armin remains silent, listening and waiting.Â
âI lost it when he started talking about her. I just fucking lost it.â
Hesitant, Armin asks, âIsâŚis something going on with you two?â
Before he can answer, Reiner exits the room, avoiding their gaze as he quickly walks pass them and down the stairs. Shortly after, Levi appears in the hall, beckoning Eren inside.Â
âWait for me downstairs. I will explain everything later. Please, Armin,â he begs, standing up to enter the chapter room.Â
Armin agrees, leaving Eren with Levi and Erwin to discuss his fate in the fraternity.
Inside, Levi directs Eren in a chair, facing the two seniors, who study him closely. The president is the first to speak. âTell us why you hit Reiner.â
Thereâs a split second where he considers lying. Make up some bullshit excuse about how they were just messing around and it ended up going a little too far, leaving out any mention of the real reason. Continue being a coward and hide from the truth to protect whatever dwindling integrity he thinks he still has. However, he remembers the vow he made to himself just a few hours ago. No more lies, no more manipulation. Itâs time that heâs honest. With her, with his friends. Most crucially, himself. Heâs digging his way out of this ditch he recklessly buried himself in.Â
He takes a deep breath, trembling with residual adrenaline from the fight earlier. âHe was talking shit about Sigma Nu Kappa. Heâs always saying something disrespectful about them. Tonight, I got fed up and hit him.â
âWhat kind of disrespectful comments does he say?â
âCalls them losers. Ugly. Heâll insult them any chance he gets.â
âHas he been saying these things for a while now?â
âYeah. Ever since the beginning of the semester. When we first partnered with them.â
Levi leans forward. âSo why did you hit him tonight? What did he say that triggered you to react the way you did?â
He swallows hard. âHe called my friend an ugly bitch. Thatâs when I really got upset.â
âMikasa?â
âNo,â Eren answers, then states her name.Â
This seems to surprise them. Levi sits back against his seat, seeming intrigued; Erwinâs brows relax as he states, âSheâs the one you nominated for sweetheart.âÂ
Eren nods. Levi, unable to help himself, blurts out, âShe was Mikeâs date to formal, right?âÂ
He confirms this with another nod, the mention of formal causing him to tense up a bit. The night when everything came crashing down.
âWhat exactly did Reiner say about her?âÂ
âCalled her an ugly bitch,â he replies, feeling his skin tingle with anger again, recalling the conversation in his head.Â
âWhat would provoke him to call her that?â At this point, it sounds like Erwin and Levi are posing questions based on their own curiosity, rather than to investigate the incident. Either way, Eren continues to be completely candid, the truth flowing out of him naturally. In an odd way, it feels cathartic.Â
âHe saw us kissing at formal,â he replies. âAfter I nominated her tonight, I guess he decided to confront me about it. This whole semester, heâs been telling me not to get with a Sigma Nu Kappa. Like it would be some disgrace or whatever. Heâs a fucking asshole.â
âWait, hold on. You kissed her?âÂ
âYes. Weâve been together for the past few months, hooking up in secret. Nobody knew.â
They pause on the interrogation for a minute, quietly absorbing all this information. Finally, Levi clears his throat, summarizing, âSo, Reiner confronted you tonight about your secret relationship with the Sigma Nu Kappa, said some awful things about her because heâs a grade A asshole, and his disgusting comments provoked you to hit him. Is this accurate?â
Again, he nods. âI couldnât stand around and let him talk about her like that. I care about her.â Admitting it out loud doesnât scare him nearly as much as he thought it would. In fact, it doesnât scare him at all.
Erwin says, âNo matter how justified you think you were in doing that, violence is against our rules.â
Fearing whatâs about to happen next, Eren murmurs, âYeah, I get it.â
âItâs strictly against Alpha Tauâs code of conduct to strike another brother in anger. We do not condone violent behavior against one another, or anyone for that matter. We have no choice; we have to expel you from the organization.â In a more sympathetic tone, Erwin adds, âIâm sorry, Eren.âÂ
His heart sinks. Another consequence of his rash decisions. He has to accept it. âWhat about Reiner?â
âWe are investigating this further. Between you and me, he claims your violence against him was totally unprovoked and out of nowhere. Off the record, we donât buy that. To be honest, heâs been on our radar for a while now. Weâve received several complaints from other brothers about his disrespectful behavior. Once we gather enough evidence against him, he too will be kicked out.â
Levi adds, âI know it seems unfair, Eren. I understand standing up for someone you care about. But rules are rules. Since we were just in deep shit with the Student Affairs Committee, this is the only way to deal with this without causing another big stink.â
âYeah, I understand.â I fucked up, I deserve this.
âOff the record, why did you take that Delta Mu Pieck to formal instead of her?â Erwin shoots Levi a glare, which he responds with a roll of his eyes. âWhat? I said off the record.â
âBecause Iâm an asshole,â he replies. He could easily blame Reiner for influencing him the past few months. At the end of the day, Eren is the true culprit behind every one of his fucked-up decisions. Itâs time that he finally takes accountability for it.Â
Levi lets out a small, disapproving hum, crossing his arms over his chest.Â
Eren adds, âIf itâs any consolation, she ended it with me that same night. Not because I took Pieck, but because she had enough of my bullshit.âÂ
Levi clicks his tongue. âSounds like you deserved it.â Thereâs a hint of sympathy in voice when he suggests, âItâs never too late to apologize and make amends.â
âIâm afraid it is. For me, at least,â he comments, staring down at the hardwood floor.Â
âWell, it doesnât hurt to try.â He clears his throat nervously, giving his last piece of advice to his now ex-brother. Erwin has a small smirk on his face, amused by Leviâs slight change in demeanor. âAnyways, come back later this week to drop off your pin and any letters you have. Sorry it has to be this way.â
Eren shrugs, saddened by the outcome, though not completely devastated. Definitely not in the same emotional state heâs been in the rest of the week. If someone had told him this a few months ago, even just last week before he got dumped, he probably would have thought this is the worst feeling ever. Now, thereâs nothing worse than the dread in his heart, not knowing how to mend his relationship with her. Or the emptiness he feels in the midst of her absence.Â
He stands up and approaches the two seniors, placing an inverted fist over his chest. Itâs their official fraternity salute. A final goodbye. They mimic him respectfully, Erwin adding, âGood luck, Eren.â
He slowly walks down the hallway out of the chapter room, taking it all in one last time. His fraternity career was short-lived, and he wasnât the most outstanding Alpha Tau brother to ever exist. Still, he tries to savor it, knowing heâll never experience it again.
If only he understood this feeling with her sooner. He would have never let her go.Â
Back downstairs, Eren finds Armin lounging on the couch in between Connie and Jean. When they see him, they all hop off and bombard him with comments, buzzing with excitement.
âEren! Are you in trouble?â
âThat was insane, man. You clocked that fucking bastard.â
âReiner stormed out of here fucking pissed. It was glorious.â
Armin shushes the other two and repeats, âAre you in trouble? What did they say?â
Eren focuses his gaze at his feet, hands in his pockets. âThey kicked me out.â
Connie and Jean groan as Arminâs eyes go round, almost in tears. âOh, Eren.â
âShit, dude. Thatâs fucked up,â Connie mutters, patting him on the back.
Eren shrugs. âI deserve it. Sorry guys.â
Jean surprisingly pats him on the back too. âDonât apologize, man. Iâm sure you had a valid reason for socking that asshole.â
To avoid the others from starting their own interrogation, Armin whispers, âEren, letâs go get food at the dining hall before we head back to our room.âÂ
Eren gets the hint and obliges, wanting to continue their conversation from earlier, privately. They bid farewell to Connie and Jean, then leave the house to head towards the cafeteria. He notices Armin send a quick text on his phone. âMikasa is going to meet with us now, sheâs just changing real quick.â
He nods, beyond thankful and appreciative to have his real friends there for him. All semester, he took them for granted, just as he did with her. What was he thinking these past few months?Â
Inside the dining hall, Armin sets a plate of fries for them to share as they wait for Mikasa to arrive. When she does, thereâs a concerned look on her face as she rushes over to their table. âIs it true?â
âYeah, itâs true. Iâm no longer in Alpha Tau.â
âWhat?! Why?â
âI punched Reiner.â
âYou what?âÂ
He repeats himself, almost amused at Mikasaâs extreme reactions.
âWhy? Why did you punch him?â
âI will explain everything. I need to preface this by saying this is my fault. None of the blame should fall on her.â
âHuh? Who are you talking about?â
Eren says her name. Armin doesnât react, already somewhat aware of the situation from their brief conversation earlier. On the other hand, Mikasaâs face contorts into something between confusion and shock. She repeats her name. âMy roommate? My sorority sister? What does this have to do with her?â
âWeâve been hooking up in secret for the past few months, ever since the first exchange. But I fucked up. I really fucked up.âÂ
Before Mikasa goes haywire, Armin interjects calmly, âStart from the beginning, Eren.â
And so he does. Eren recalls the night of the exchange. His asshole behavior towards her initially, which he displayed in front of all their peers during that dumb Truth or Dare game. He leaves out the dirty details for the sanctity of his friends. In his own mind, he vividly remembers how the night ended, relishing the wanton moans escaping her luscious lips with every pump of his fingers. The sloppy and inexperienced blowjob she gave him to finish him off. The way he tried to initiate his fuck boy status by mentioning it would be a one-time thing, that he didnât find her interesting enough to keep it going. It was the beginning of this beautiful disaster.Â
Armin and Mikasa interrupt him only to clarify a few details. For the most part, over the next half hour or so, they listen with intrigue as he goes through each of his disappointing choices. Shamefully confessing his depraved corruption kink to take her virginity. Intimidating her into keeping their budding relationship a secret. Denying her of any friendship outside of the bedroom. Refusing to even acknowledge her existence. Manipulating her into thinking the two of them would eventually evolve into something real, knowing all too well that he was too much of a coward to commit.Â
He relives their first time together. Grabbing her by the wrist at that party. Unconcerned about any prying eyes surrounding them, only focused on having her for himself. Heâll never regret being with her. He only wishes he made it more special. Something out of a romance instead of a dirty porno flick.Â
The day of the Sigma Nu Kappaâs bake sale, he tried his best to move on from her. Convinced he had his fill after their night of lust. He couldnât get enough. He wanted her, and she wanted him. They started their little arrangement, their secret love affair. It was supposed to be no strings attached. They were using each other to fulfill their sexual desires, that was it. Thereâs no denying it evolved into something else.Â
He never meant for it to go this far. This is exactly what he feared. Every chance he could, he kept her at a distance. It seemed like no matter what he did though, they always found their way back to each other. He started to imagine how easy it would be to be together like a normal couple. Even fantasized about it, dreaming about spending their days hanging out with their friends, carefree and happy. He could never bring himself to make the right decisions to go this route. In typical Eren Jaeger fashion, he let his ego and cowardice lead him to destruction. And just as he was ready to turn it all around, it was too late. She walked out of his life for good. Â
He was so afraid of falling in love. Afraid of being vulnerable and letting her into his life. He was so scared to take that leap of faith, that he deprived himself of any chance at it, thinking he was protecting himself from getting hurt. Ironically, heâs hurt anyways, knowing what they could have been and how he ruined it.Â
All he wants is for them not to be two worlds apart, as ex-lovers so often end up. He wants to exist in her universe as much as sheâll allow him to. Whether itâs as an acquaintance, or better yet, as a friend. Anything is better than being a ghost of her past that haunts her.Â
It would be unfair to ask her to forgive and forget. Rather, he wants to be forgiven and he wants to atone. He may never be able to make up for the pain he caused her; heâll spend whatever time sheâll give him trying to.Â
They canât go back and change the past. Maybe now, they can rewrite their story with an alternate ending. One where theyâre both happy, whether theyâre together or apart. All he wants is for her to be happy. He wants that more than anything. And if that means living in her life as a background character, so be it. She deserves a fairytale ending that sparks a love so pure and real. One they almost ignited themselves.Â
His friends listen to him as he laments on his dilemma. Armin, who sits next to him, consoles him by rubbing his back soothingly. Across the table, Mikasa observes him with her arms over her chest, processing all of the information heâs shared. Her expression remains neutral, which unsettles Eren just as much as her angry look does.Â
âI donât know what to do. I donât know how to fix this,â he says, seeking advice.
âHave you tried apologizing to her?â Armin suggests.
âI tried to talk to her the morning after, but I couldnât. And she blocked my number, so I canât get a hold of her any other way.â
Mikasa leans forward on the table. âDo you think you would have been able to tell her what you just told us if you did get the chance to talk to her that morning?â
Eren ponders this for several seconds. Sure, he was desperate to talk to her after what transpired, but his mind was a jumbled mess. Heâs not even sure what he would have said to her. It might have made things worse. Now, with an entire week to contemplate, he feels like he has more clarity than he ever has. Heâs no longer afraid to speak the truth, to be vulnerable. He wants to tell her everything. No more holding back.Â
âI donât think so,â he answers. âBut I think I can now. Iâm not expecting her to take me back or even forgive me. I just donât want it to end this way, with her thinking I donât care about her. I donât want her to move on with her life thinking that what we had meant nothing.â
She stares at him silently, deliberating. Sighing, she finally says, âOkay.â
Confused, Eren breathes out, âWhat?â
âIâll help you.â
His mouth hangs open, surprised at her proposition.
She explains, âIâll admit, Iâm pretty pissed about this whole situation. I canât believe you would do this, Eren. Even with her, Iâm shocked. She didnât say anything to me, even before you agreed to keep it all a secret. Maybe she was scared with how I would reactâŚâ She trails off, getting momentarily lost in her thoughts.Â
Armin chimes in, âWe all have our reasons for keeping secrets.â
âI just wish either of you would have told me or Armin. We could have salvaged whatever fucked up situation you got yourselves into. Instead of going to us, you chose to listen to that idiot Reiner. What were you thinking?â
He shakes his head. âI wasnât, obviously.â
âIâm disappointed in you. How could you treat someone like that? Iâm disappointed in her too for allowing herself to be treated like that. Still, Iâm willing to help fix this. Only if youâre genuine about wanting to.â
âI am. I promise you I am. Iâve made a lot of empty promises with her, but this time, I truly mean it,â Eren urges.
âFine. Letâs go.â
He gulps nervously. âSeriously? Right now? Youâll help me?â
âYes. No turning back. If you really want to do this, letâs do it now.â
He thinks for a moment, then responds, âRight. Letâs go.â
They walk out of dining hall to head over to Mikasaâs dorm room. Armin heads in the other direction. Before they part ways, Eren says, âHey. Thank you. Both of you. Iâm sorry. I wish this semester turned out differently.â
Armin gives him a small smile. âWe all make mistakes. Iâm just glad youâre willing to learn from them.â
With that, Eren follows Mikasa, his heart on his sleeve, ready to face her.Â
~~~
Eren got kicked out of Alpha Tau.
Mikasaâs words, combined with the grim expression on her face, lingers on your mind as you stare blankly in front of you, stunned.
Thereâs no logical explanation you can come up with that would lead to this. What could he have possibly done to warrant getting kicked out? It must have been a serious offense. Even with everything thatâs occurred between you two, itâs hard to imagine him doing something atrocious enough to be punished like this.
During your short-lived fling, he was never intentionally malicious. His downfall was his overinflated ego and selfishness. You donât believe it in your heart that he truly wanted to hurt you, not on purpose anyways. It could have been his big ego that blinded him from the destruction left in his path, until it crumbled beneath him. His behavior post break-up, if you can even call it that, caught you off guard. You didnât expect him to plead with you just to speak with him. The guilt really must be eating away at him.Â
You snap yourself out of your thoughts and try to focus back onto your laptop. Earlier this week, you made a vow to yourself that you would move on. To do that, you have to stop thinking about him, stop worrying about him. Youâve been able to distract yourself so far by hanging out with your sisters and focusing on your studies. Every so often, there will be small fragments in your daily life where he sneaks back into your mind. With all of it being fresh in your memory, you forgive yourself for it. Over time, you hope to forget about him completely.
You spend the next hour watching Netflix on your computer, subconsciously waiting for Mikasaâs return so you can get the scoop about Eren. When itâs almost 11 oâclock, you get out of bed to clear up some clutter on your desk. Youâre facing away when you hear the familiar jingle of keys and the door creak open. Smirking to yourself, excited and nervous to hear the latest update, you keep your back turned, still rummaging through your messy stack of notes.
âThis better be good, Mikasa,â you tease, turning to face her. To your surprise, itâs Eren standing before you.Â
âHi,â he greets. His hair is down. You donât remember ever seeing him with his hair like this. Itâs a different look for him. He seems vulnerable.
You stand up straight, stepping back defensively. âWhat are you doing here?â
âMikasa let me in. Sheâs just outside,â he explains.
âMikasaâŚ? Does that mean â â
âYeah. She knows. I told her. About everything.âÂ
Your eyes widen. âWhat?âÂ
âI told her about us.â He bites his lower lip, waiting for a response. Itâs not the same intensity in those green eyes youâre so used to seeing. He gazes at you softly, cautiously. Afraid to come off too strong or too aggressive. He leans against the door, aware that heâs in your personal space, not wanting to encroach it any farther.Â
âWhy would you do that?âÂ
âBecause I need to be honest with everyone. Especially with you.â It looks like heâs about to take a step forward, but doesnât, standing in place. âI donât know if you heard already. I got kicked out of Alpha Tau.â
âMikasa mentioned it before she left. What happened?â
âI punched Reiner,â he answers. You take in a sharp breath, trying to reel in the large gasp you almost let out.  He punched Reiner?!
He continues, staring down at the ground. âHe saw us kissing at formal and confronted me about it. Said some awful things about you. So, I hit him.â
It takes you a few seconds to process all of what he says. âReinerâŚ?âÂ
âTrust me, he deserved it. I should have done that a long time ago.â
âStill, why would you hit him?â
He lifts his head up to look directly at you. âBecause I care about you. And I wasnât going to let him get away with saying all that stupid shit. Not anymore.â
âYouâŚcare about me?âÂ
âYeah, I do,â he confesses. âI care about you a lot.â
Thereâs a brief moment of silence as you relax in front of him, the tension lessening in the small space between you two. A tiny part of you wants to close the distance; you resist the urge.Â
âWhat about Alpha Tau?â you ask. âYou must be pretty upset about that.â
âI donât care. All I care about is that you and me okay.â
You stay silent, unsure how to respond.Â
He fills the silence by starting, âIâm sorry. Sorry for hurting you, for making you feel ashamed and worthless. No person should ever make you feel like that. Iâm so sorry it was me.â
He keeps his gaze on you. âIâve been an asshole to you. I know that. I led you on, I toyed with your emotions. I was selfish and immature. It wasnât my intention to hurt you. Still, thereâs no excuse.â
You swallow hard, taken aback by his apology. Youâve gotten used to him saying whatever he can to get his way. This time, however, it sounds sincere. Especially with the way he looks at you.
âI have plenty of regrets about what I did to you. But I donât regret being with you. Not for one second. And I know my word means nothing. I know Iâve lost your trust completely. Iâve made too many empty promises. But if thereâs one that you can believe, let it be this one. I wonât put you through that again. I swear on my life.â
He hesitates, taking a small step forward. âIf it never works out between us, thatâs okay. Iâll have to live with that. But I just want you in my life. As an acquaintance. Maybe one day, as a friend, if youâll let me. Thereâs just something about us that Iâm not ready to say goodbye to yet.â
You let his words sink in, your heart pounding through your chest youâre convinced he can hear it, âEren, I donât know.â
âI donât expect you to forgive me yet. And Iâm not asking you to take me back. I just want a do-over or something.â
âA do-over?â
âYeah. Meet me for who I really am, and not whoever that asshole was throughout this whole semester. Iâm leaving that fucking prick behind and never looking back. Itâs really me now.â
âWe canât just forget and move on like nothing happened,â you tell him. If only life was this simple.
âI know we canât. Iâm not asking you to forget. You can hold it against me for as long as you want. All Iâm asking for is a chance to redeem myself. I donât know what exactly I have to do yet to earn back your trust. But I think starting from the beginning is a small step, right?â
âYeah. I guess.âÂ
âSo, letâs do it properly.â
You raise an eyebrow at him, perplexed by his statement. âWhat do you mean?â
He holds out his hand to you. âHi. Iâm Eren Jaeger. Iâm a sophomore studying pre-law. Iâm from Shiganshina District, born and raised. I like the ocean, Jaeger-bombs of course, and listening to rain pitter patter against the window.â
You take his hand in yours, reciting your own introduction back to him in a similar format. He smiles at you, eyes lighting up as you hold onto each other for a few seconds longer than necessary. Cherishing the feeling of his skin on yours, gazing at each other affectionately. It feels like the first time youâre actually seeing each other.Â
âItâs nice to finally meet you,â he says, still smiling.Â
âYou too.â
He loosens his grip but doesnât pull away, letting you be the one to drop his hand. Rubbing the back of his neck nervously, he chuckles, âI should probably go before Mikasa starts scolding me again.âÂ
âYikes. I guess I should prepare myself, right?â you joke, grinning at him. It feels natural. Relaxed.Â
âYeah, Iâm sure she has a lot to say to you.â His eyes twinkle at you. âThank you. Iâll see you around, okay?â
You nod at him as he gives you a small wave, turning the handle to leave. You hear him whisper something to Mikasa, who walks into the room, shutting the door. She stares at you with a curious expression. Youâre nervous sheâs about to kick your ass for lying to her for the past few months. Instead, she asks, âAre you okay?â
You let out a sigh of relief. âYeah. Iâm okay.â
âIâm not going to yell at you. Not tonight, at least.â
You donât respond, guilty about deceiving your roommate and closest friend.Â
âBut Iâm proud of you,â she says. âEven though you kept this from me the entire time, Iâm proud of the way you handled it. Really proud.â
She steps forward, holding her arms out in an embrace. You let yourself be enveloped in her warmth, feeling as if a huge weight has been lifted off your shoulders. No more sneaking around, no more lies, everything out in the open. As it should be.Â
Instead of dwelling on the past, youâll move forward, stronger and smarter than you were before. Youâll always remember the excitement of being with him. The passion, the heat. The rush. The little moments where you felt that spark. Itâs the exhilaration from these memories that youâll store away fondly in your heart. And while the painful memories may linger in your mind indefinitely, you wonât use it as a weapon against him. Itâll be a reminder of how you were able to learn from your mistakes. A valuable lesson in self-worth.Â
Youâre unsure what the future holds for you and Eren. No matter how far out of his orbit you are, somehow you still find yourself gravitating towards him. This time, itâll be different. Youâre not the same naĂŻve girl you were at the start of the semester. All your decisions will be on your own terms, not somebody elseâs. Itâs possible that one day, youâll learn to like each other as friends. Thereâs so much you donât know about him, and thereâs plenty he doesnât know about you. You both deserve a love that goes beyond the surface, one where it feels like your souls are at home with each other. Comfortable, safe, everlasting. Maybe eventually, you can find that type of love with each other. Or maybe itâs truly not meant to be. For now, youâll let your story play out how the universe writes it, one chapter at a time.Â
cw: mention of a tragic accident (does not go into detail)
Summary: You make the very first bento box for your dear brother, Ren. You also find out some surprising news. Nanami hasn't found a new bakery to buy his typical ham and cheese sandwich. He eyes his new student's bento box with envy.
Notes: The first bento box is inspired by this: Cute Octopus Sausage Bento! I mean, how cute is this?! Let me know in the comments, chat, or in a private message if you'd like to be tagged in the next chapter(s)! And thank you for reading! Likes, reblogs, and comments are always appreciated :)
A Bento for Kento Masterlist
--------------------
White rice, check. Chicken gyozas, check. Spring mix salad with a side of creamy miso dressing, check. Hot dog pieces shaped like little octopi, because why the hell not, check. All in the bento they go, you think, in a sing-song voice.Â
Itâs the beginning of summer and the temperature is finally starting to warm up. This season always puts you in a lazy mood, more so than usual. Hearing the neighborhood kids play joyfully outside makes you wish you had a mandated break as well. But no, you are an adult! Almost thirty in fact. Unfortunately, you havenât had a vacation in years, so you will continue to flow through the mundane cycle of adulthood until youâre retired or, fingers crossed, win the lottery. None of which you predict will happen in the near future.
Thankfully, your job allows you to work from home most days of the year. This is especially nice because this summer, your dear younger brother, Ren, is living with you. Your parents originally planned a long family vacation overseas with him, having never had a chance to travel before. You were excited for him to see the outside world, explore his horizons. Since you couldnât go because of your responsibilities to your 9-to-5, you were planning to live vicariously through him as he enjoyed the sights, sounds, and most importantly, the delicious food.
When he decided last minute that he did not want to go on the trip anymore, you were shocked. Your parents, being the saints they are, waved it off casually, not even attempting to convince him to reconsider. You questioned them to discover the reason for the sudden decision. They simply said, âHe has his reasons.â No further explanation. After pestering them a few more times, only to receive the same answer, you stopped, leaving everything up to your own speculations.Â
Maybe it was cold feet? Anxiety? An awkward phase? Overseas trips can be stressful, you can understand that. Still, you canât help but wonder. Itâs probably a hormonal teenager issue that you canât comprehend, but your parents can, so you leave it at that.Â
Because your parents couldnât get out of all the deposits they made, they chose to go on their big trip without Ren. Not wanting your brother to be alone, you offered your place for him to stay, which he was just as excited about as you were. Youâre happy for this opportunity to spend time with him. Itâs been years since you moved out and you missed hanging out with your family. You also feel guilty about putting minimal effort into visiting them, despite being less than an hour train ride away. This is your chance to make up for lost time, especially with your brother, who youâve always felt a special bond with. Before they left, your parents made it a point to tell you, âTake care of him while weâre away.â As if you needed to prove to them, and yourself, that you are capable of being the best older sister you can be.Â
Truth be told, itâs been lonely living on your own, a revelation that you sense more and more each year you get older. Having Ren here, someone in your life who loves you unconditionally, is a welcome change. This summer is going to be exponentially better than the last five since living alone. Youâre sure of it.Â
The first Monday of vacation, fueled by a single coffeeâs worth of caffeine, you greet your brother happily in the kitchen. âGood morning, sunshine! Look what I made for you!â You cradle a precious bento box in your hands, slowly lifting it up like Simba, imagining âCircle of Lifeâ playing in the background.Â
Ren, fresh out of bed and still drowsy, stands in front of you, rubbing his eyes sleepily. âHuh?â He yawns and stretches his arms out. âWhat is it?â
âItâs a bento box!â You lower it and open the cover delicately. Your eyes sparkle as you imagine a golden light shimmer from within. âI put this together myself! TikTok has a plethora of bento box content, so I took a lot of ideas from there.â
His eyes widen, gazing at the food as if itâs valuable treasure. âGyozas! And hot dog octopi!â A bright smile on his face, he takes his phone out to snap a picture. âIâm putting this on my story, this is too cute.âÂ
You almost tear up hearing him praise your creation like this, but itâs too earlier for those shenanigans. Calming down from your excitement, you say, âIâm still practicing. And Iâm sure Iâll run out of ideas soon, so if you have any special requests, let me know.â
Closing the bento and setting it back down on the table, you ask, âWhat do you want to do today? If youâre hungry now, you can dig into the bento. But I was thinking we can go for a walk at the park before we eat! What do you think?â
His smile slowly turns into a small pout as he shifts his feet guiltily. âWell, actually, I forgot to tell you. I start summer school today.â
âHuh? Summer school? But your school is so far from here! Itâll take us at least 45 minutes to get there!â Is this the reason why he didnât want to go on the trip? All because of summer school? And if he knew that, why would he agree to stay here, when itâs so far away? You start to panic slightly, taken aback by this sudden news.Â
âItâs not exactly for regular school,â he begins to explain. âItâsâŚuh, for this other program Iâm applying to.â
You stare at him, brows furrowed, arms crossed, waiting for more of an explanation.Â
He speaks a little faster now. âItâs a summer program for this school called Jujutsu High. A big opportunity came up and I took it. The lessons are three days a week for the next two months. Thatâs the reason I didnât want to go on the trip anymore. I have to attend these lessons so I can officially get in next semester. I want to go to this school from now on.â
Pausing to take a breath, he continues. âMom and Dad know all about it. I explained it to them. They support me 100%, which is why they didnât make a big deal when I backed out of the trip. They know this is important to me.â
Your mouth hangs open slightly, still confused, waiting for it to make sense. Jujutsu High? Why is this the first time youâre hearing of this? And Mom and Dad know all about it? Why didnât anyone tell you?Â
Ren walks towards you and puts his hands on your shoulders, giving you a firm squeeze. When did he get so much taller than you? Werenât you supposed to be the adult here?! âI know this doesnât make sense, but itâs important to me. Iâm sorry for not telling you sooner. Itâs justâŚhard to explain. And I canât really tell you everything yet. You just have to trust me.â
Heâs being weirdly cryptic, but you start to realize how odd your parents were also being the other day.Â
He has his reasons.Â
Take care of him while weâre away.
Is there something they all know about that you donât? And why are you the only one being kept in the dark?Â
You snap out of your thoughts when he starts speaking again. âIâm sorry, I know Iâm being strange about this, but I donât know how to explain everything right now. Just trust me. Itâs not sketchy or dangerous, I promise.â He flashes you a reassuring grin.Â
After contemplating for several seconds, you sigh. âYou promise itâs not some creepy cult, right? Iâve indulged in my fair share of true crime podcasts. I can see the warning signs!â
He laughs. âIf it is a cult, then Iâm already screwed, right?â
You roll your eyes. âOkay, fine. Iâm going to pretend that this is perfectly normal. I trust you. And I trust Mom and Dad. If theyâre good with it, Iâm good with it too. You donât have to tell me everything right now if you donât want to.â You pause, then reiterate, âI trust you.â
He wraps you in a big hug, âThanks sis. You really are the best.âÂ
You return his embrace, still concerned, but ultimately deciding not to worry so much about it. It canât be anything too nefarious, right? âAnyways, Jujutsu High. Is it close by?â
âYeah, itâs walking distance from here, about 10 minutes. But Iâm doing my lessons at a nearby office building. I actually have to head over there now to meet my teacher. Our first lesson is today.â He scrambles to pack a few items into his backpack.
How strange, an office building? This really might be some weird cult thing. You grab the bento from the table and hand it to him. âWell, take this. Youâll need food. Are you skipping breakfast?â
He packs the bento carefully into his backpack. âYeah, Iâll just save my appetite for this. This looks so good. Thanks for making it.â He zips up his bag and swings it over his shoulder. âWell, Iâm off! Iâll see you later.â
As he walks towards the door, you yell out at him, âBe careful! See you later!â
You take a deep breath and look around, sighing. All alone once again.Â
~~~
âNice to meet you, Nakamura. My name is Kento Nanami. Iâll be your mentor the next few weeks.âÂ
Ren Nakamura, aged 16. Gojo recruited him when they found him wandering around the abandoned building they were investigating outside of Tokyo. This is a trial run before officially offering him a spot as a student in this upcoming schoolyear. He has no history or knowledge of Jujutsu Sorcery, having been raised by a family of non-sorcerers. However, according to Gojo, he seems to have an eye for curses, having the guts to take them head-on with no experience whatsoever. And clearly, Gojo has his own eyes on him for a reason.Â
âHeâs adopted. His parents were killed in a tragic, mysterious accident and these family friends took him in.â Gojo gave Nanami a brief background last week. âIt seems like since then, heâs had a habit for exploring haunted houses and chasing curses.âÂ
Gojo paused, then smirked. âThe kidâs got guts, thatâs for sure. He was taking on this ugly looking grade 4 curse with just his skateboard as a weapon. Luckily we found him before he could get hurt.â Gojo laughed and said happily, âHeâs pretty twisted, so heâll fit right in.â
Thatâs how Nanami ended up here, his summer dedicated to guiding this rookie. He still owes Gojo a favor, so they settle on this as a way to pay it back. Nanami actually doesnât mind training young prospects in Jujutsu Sorcery. Teaching is one of his hidden passions in life. It gives him purpose, something his last job couldnât fulfill for him. Plus, itâs fun and heâs proficient at it.
Him and his new student spend the first few hours going through the history of Jujutsu Sorcery and the school, Ren interjecting often to ask questions expected from someone whoâs life suddenly changed upon realizing this unique ability. Gojo even made a surprise appearance to check-in, adding a bit more chaos to the mix.
After Nanami feels like heâs overwhelmed him enough, he decides itâs time for a lunch break. He looks at his desk and remembers too late that he did not pick up lunch for the both of them, which he intended to do. The local bakery he frequents stopped selling his favorite ham and cheese sandwich. He had put off finding a replacement for a while now. After running errands all morning, the thought of providing lunch slips his mind completely.Â
âNakamura. Iâm sorry, but I did not bring lunch for us. Iâm just going to make a hot tea for myself, but if you give me a few minutes, Iâll run out and quickly buy â â
âHey, no worries, mentor! I actually brought a lunch.â He pulls out a bento box out of his backpack and opens it.Â
Nanamiâs eyes widen behind his thick glasses as Ren removes the cover. It almost seems as if a dazzling light radiates once the food is revealed. Gyozas, white rice, salad, even hot dogs shaped like little sea creatures. He would never admit to anything being âcuteâ, but that is the first word that pops into his head, seeing this charming work of art. Ren stares lovingly at his meal, rubs his hands together, and begins to eat. Â
As he digs into his gyozas, Nanami heads to the breakroom down the hall to make himself a cup of hot tea. Damn, that looked good. Need to remember to find another bakery that has ham and cheese sandwiches, he thinks to himself, waiting for the hot water to dispense into his mug.
He comes back to the conference room, freshly brewed tea in hand, and finds Ren pointing at his bento, mouth full as he muffles, âWant some?â
Shaking his head, he declines. âNo thank you. Iâm fine with my tea.â He pauses to think. Then he adds, âLooks good, though.â
He swallows before proudly announcing, âMy sister made it! Itâs something new sheâs trying.â He hums happily as he bites into one of the meat octopi. The salad has been skillfully avoided, causing Nanami to smile for a fraction of a second before he catches himself.
He watches his student, all while taking a few sips of his tea. âDo you live with your sister currently? I heard that your hometown is outside Tokyo.â
âYeah I do. She lives 10 minutes from here, so itâs convenient. I know Iâll have to move into the dorms on campus, if I get accepted that is. Itâll be nice to have my sister nearby, though. Even if she doesnât know about any of this.â Ren frowns slightly. Perhaps itâs guilt? Nanami assumes that his sister is a non-sorcerer, based on what Gojo told him about his family situation. He also assumes that she isnât fully aware of what her brother is now involved in.Â
He takes another sip of his tea, unsure how to respond since he has little experience explaining Jujutsu Sorcery to non-sorcerers. In fact, heâs made sure to keep his personal life completely separate from his work. Thatâs how it was when he was a salaryman, thatâs how it is in his current profession. He even swore to himself that he wouldnât get married while he is still working as a Jujutsu Sorcerer. Maybe this is also an excuse to avoid the awkward dating scene that he finds so tiresome.
âAre you sure you donât want any?â Ren asks, pointing at the remainder of the meal, which is just leafy greens.Â
Downing the rest of his hot beverage, Nanami replies, âNo thank you. Iâm fine.â He looks at his watch. âActually, letâs call it a day. I donât want to overwhelm you on your first lesson. We can continue tomorrow.â
Ren stands up from his seat and rubs his belly. âSure, sounds good! Iâll review my notes tonight and ask any other questions tomorrow.â A burp escapes his mouth, and he looks nervously at his mentor. âSorry,â he mutters.
Nanami rolls his eyes, still hidden behind his spectacles, ignoring the crude belch. âIâll see you tomorrow at 9 AM. Please donât be late.â He remains seated as Ren stuffs his belongings into his bag and waves goodbye out the door.Â
Removing his glasses, he leans his head further back on his chair and closes his eyes, rubbing the bridge of his nose with his left hand. Itâs been a while since heâs taught a lesson, and heâs not accustomed to talking so much. Human interaction can be just as exhausting as fighting off weak curses. Frankly, itâs overwhelming for him at times, being a man of few words on a regular basis.
He opens his eyes and sighs deeply, looking around at the empty room. All alone once again.Â

Summary: After an uneventful freshman year, sophomore Eren Jaeger joins Alpha Tau, the top fraternity at University of Paradis. In the aftermath of last semesterâs scandal, the fraternity makes the decision to partner with the academically successful but socially unpopular sorority Sigma Nu Kappa in hopes of building back their reputation.
As a new member of Sigma Nu Kappa, you meet the mysterious Eren through your roommate and now sister, Mikasa Ackerman. His good looks and intensity pull you in at first. But like it is often portrayed in television and movies, finding love in a frat house is never that simple.

----------
Alpha Tau fraternity. Arguably the hottest, most popular frat at University of Paradis. Ask any sorority girl who their favorite type of guy is. Nine times out of ten, their answer is âan Alpha Tauâ. The same answer applies if you ask any goddamn independent who the worst type of guy is. Girls want to fuck them, guys want to be them, GDIs want to hate them. And thatâs why they are the kings on campus.Â
For the past ten years, Alpha Tau has always had the most numbers when it comes to recruitment, also known as ârushâ. Every potential new member puts them at the top of their list. But that didnât mean they had the most members.
The thing about Alpha Tau is that they pride themselves on being exclusive. As if a fucking frat wasnât already âexclusiveâ enough. They are notoriously critical when it comes to accepting new members, often spending hours during rush week to decide who is worthy of being a brother. The basis of this is usually looks, athletic ability, legacy, and sometimes even academic prowess.
Thatâs how current sophomore Eren Jaeger and his best friend, Armin Arlert, managed to finesse their way into the elusive club. Erenâs older half-brother, Zeke, who graduated from Paradis a few years back, was a legend in Alpha Tau, known as âThe Beastâ. Zeke told him all kinds of wild stories about his college shenanigans, specifically about his time in the fraternity. Crazy parties, drunken adventures, all the hot chicks he hooked up with. It sounded like a dream come true to Eren after his horribly boring freshman year. Thatâs what inspired him to rush this year as a sophomore, dragging Armin along with him.
Once the frat found out Eren was a âlegacyâ, being related to âThe Beastâ, he was a shoo-in. He also persuaded them to give a bid to Armin, convincing them that he is the smartest and most strategic man theyâll ever meet, right next to Erwin Smith, the current president of the fraternity.
The others in his pledge class are Connie Springer, Jean Kirstein, and Marco Bott. Jean and Marco got in based on their athletic ability; they are members of the college soccer team. Connie was recruited purely for his funny personality and good nature. And maybe also the fact that he is a massive stoner, which they took a liking to.
Tonight is the first chapter meeting that the new pledge class is allowed to attend. After a few weeks of new member development, taught by the strait-laced and straight-edge senior Levi Ackerman, Eren and his class are officially Alpha Tau brothers. Now the fun begins.
As they fall in line outside the chapter room, Armin leans in close to Eren and whispers, âSome of the members got kicked out.â
He whips he head around and asks, âHuh? Are you serious?â
âYeah. I heard that the last president, Nile Dok, messed up big time last semester. He was turning a blind eye to all the problematic members. They were caught cheating and trying to pay their way out of trouble. Obviously, they didnât get away with it.â
As some of their other brothers start falling in line in front of them, Armin continues in a slightly hushed voice. âAlso, they called themselves the Mega Pornstars, or the MPs for short. They had their own group chat, rating the girls theyâve hooked up with and ranking them. They had a whole list. Someone in that chat let it slip to Erwin, who immediately brought it up to Nile. And Nile knew about it all along. He was in the group chat himself, but never participated in it. But he knew about it. Saw what they were saying and didnât do anything to stop it. So now, with Erwin being president, those members were immediately suspended during the summer. And the ones who graduated, he stripped them of any association with the fraternity.â
âHow do you know about this? You seem to have all the details.â
Armin looks down to his side, and in an even quieter voice, replies, âMikasa told me.â
Mikasa.
At the mention of her name, Eren instantly feels guilt. Ever since he decided to rush, he hasnât had time to spend with his other best friend. Well, truth be told, he hasnât made the effort to spend time with her. Armin, on the other hand, has. Making him feel even worse.
Realizing what Armin just said, he asks, âWait. How does Mikasa know?â
Armin gives him a small smile and states, âMikasa joined a sorority.â
~~~
Rushing a sorority was not something you thought youâd be doing the start of your sophomore year of college. But somehow, a few weeks later, you find yourself sitting beside your roommate and now pledge sister, Mikasa Ackerman, in your first chapter meeting as an official member.
The two of you have an interesting relationship. You were roommates in your freshman year, but it almost felt like you lived alone. She was always out with her friends and she only came back to the room to sleep and bathe. While she wasnât necessarily your best friend, the few times you interacted were always cordial. Sure, she is a little intense, but she is never rude. Just absent.
It surprised you when you received a text from her over the summer asking to be roommates again. You thought she didnât care enough to even consider you. Honestly, you felt a little honored. Despite her intensity, you always found Mikasa Ackerman to be cool. Aside from her dashing good looks, she had a confidence about her that just screamed badass. You lacked confidence yourself, finding your looks to be unassuming and plain. It didnât help that your freshman year turned out to be as uneventful as you were hoping it wouldnât be. How does one even find a party to go to? The few friends you made are just as home bodied as you, so spending time inside the dorm was the norm.
Sophomore year has proved to be much different than last. Mikasa, who used to be a ghost roommate, is now your friend. She spends most of her time with you now. Obviously, you donât question it. Instead, you embrace it. You like Mikasa. Itâs fun hanging out with her. Itâs like youâre making up for lost time.
When she suggested rushing, you couldnât help but think it was a joke. But no, she was dead serious. And as if Mikasa wasnât already convincing enough, she asked you, âDonât you want to be more social this year? Go to college parties? Meet boys? Have fun?â
And thatâs how you end up as an official sister of Sigma Nu Kappa.
The thing about Signa Nu Kappa, or SNK for short, is that they arenât the most popular sorority on campus. Notoriously, women rank it last on their interest list during rush week. On paper, itâs an organization that has great academic reputation, making it well liked among the professors and staff. They are the ideal representation of what the Student Affairs Committee want a sorority to look like. However, to the fellow students, they are boring. They donât party. Their social reputation amongst the other organizations in Greek Life is essentially nonexistent. Itâs also seen as the place where all the women who couldnât get into their first pick, maybe even their second or third, end up joining. The rejects.
Is it true? Maybe for some women. But after getting to know the sororities during the first week of recruitment, both you and Mikasa end up ranking SNK first. You feel comfortable with the women there. While the other sororities are nice, itâs Signa Nu Kappa that feels like home, as cheesy as that sounds.
Now, after a few weeks of getting familiar with the sorority and Greek Life in general, you and Mikasa sit beside each other, attending your very first chapter meeting as Sigma Nu Kappa sisters. Current president, Hange ZoĂŤ, stands at the podium, reading announcements off a piece of paper.
âWelcome new babies to your first official Sigma Nu Kappa chapter meeting! Woohoo!â
The other sisters clap, beaming at you and the rest of your class. You give Mikasa a knowing smile, which she returns. Hange reads off a list of housekeeping items, none of which apply to you considering you donât live in the house yet.
âOkay! The boring stuff is out of the way. Iâll let our Social Chair take the stand now!â
Petra Ral, another senior, takeâs Hangeâs place at the podium. âHi sisters! I have a very exciting announcement to make. This semester, we are being paired up with a fraternity in the effort to build stronger relations with the others in Greek Life.â
This news creates a buzz around the room. You hear one of your pledge sisters, Sasha Braus, squeal two seats down, âOoohhh boys?!â
Petra continues. âNow I know we donât have the best reputation for being the most social sorority, and this partnership might be a little bit out of the comfort zone for some of you. But we strongly believe this is a great way to improve the status of our organization. We donât want to be seen as a sorority that only performs well academically. If we want more women to join us, we need to be seen as fun! Which we are! They just donât know it yet!â
Hange exclaims, âWell said, Petra! Thereâs no doubt that we are a fun group of women. People donât know it yet. But they will soon enough!â
âSo which frat are we pairing up with?â Nanabe, another senior, asks.
With a bright smile on her face, Petra announces, âAlpha Tau!â The buzz in the room is even louder now.
Suddenly, you feel Mikasa stiffen beside you. You turn to her and whisper, âAre you okay?â Thereâs a worried look on her face, but she doesnât say anything.
Three seats down, next to Sasha, you hear a sarcastic snort from Annie Leonhart. âGreat. Weâre getting paired with a bunch of disgusting pigs.â
Christa Lenz, who sits to your other side, leans forward to ask innocently, âAnnie, what do you mean?â
Ymir puts her arm around Christaâs chair and answers, âShe means exactly what she said, sweetheart. Alpha Tau is a frat of disgusting pigs.â
Mikasa snaps her head towards Ymir and yells, âTheyâre not!â
You and the rest of your pledge class are taken aback by her outburst. Annie leans forward to face Mikasa with a smirk. âDonât worry, Mikasa. I donât include Armin when I say that. But everyone else in there can choke and die for all I care.â
Mikasa glares at her, fury in her eyes, looking like sheâs ready to attack. Before anything escalates, Hange joins Petra at the front. âOkay, listen everyone. I know this is a veryâŚcontroversial decision. Now, let me reiterate that what is said in this chapter room, stays in the chapter room. Got it?â She eyes you and your pledge class before proceeding.
âAlpha Tau is very close to being on probation by the Student Affairs Committee. Some of you may already be aware of this, but a small group of their members participated in some very inappropriate conduct. Since Erwin has been president, those members have been kicked out and properly dealt with. Erwin has made sure that they no longer represent Alpha Tau in any way whatsoever. Both Erwin and Levi Ackerman, their vice president, came to me and Petra wanting to form a partnership this semester in an attempt to improve their besmirched reputation. By pairing with us for a semester, they hope to prove to the committee that they can be a respectable fraternity, both with academics and towards women.â
Nanabe questions, âWhy us? The other sororities perform fine academically too. Seems so out of the blue they want to partner with us.â
âWell, based on numbers, we have the highest average GPA. Also, truthfully, none of the other sororities were willing to partner up with them. Considering the circumstances.â
âWhat circumstances?â
Hange pauses, unsure whether to continue or not. âOkay. Let me say this again. What is said in this room stays in this room. The now banned brothers from Alpha Tau made a list ranking the women they had sex with.â There are a few gasps and shocked reactions at this news. It makes you sick hearing it. âThis includes many women from the other sororities. So, naturally, the presidents of each of those sororities are choosing to distance themselves from Alpha Tau, at least for this semester, once all the smoke clears. Until then, we are the only sorority who has a clean slate with Alpha Tau.â
Petra adds, âAlso, both me and Hange are close to Levi and Erwin, respectively, and theyâve been wanting to pair with us for quite some time. Now that they are prez and vice prez, they have more say in those matters and are finally making it happen.â
âSo, weâre just supposed to be okay with pairing with a fraternity that ranks women based on their skills in bed? How is this okay?â Annie argues.
âThey kicked out those members! The current brothers had nothing to do with it!â Petra cries out.
Ymir chimes in with a smug expression. âWasnât their last president in on it too? That Nile guy? And is it true they called themselves the Mega Pornstars?â
Hange answers with a frenzied look, âNile didnât participate in it! And heâs already graduated, so it doesnât matter anymore! But yes, unfortunately the Mega Pornstars thing is true.â
More groaning surrounds the room. You look over at Annie, who crosses her arms with a furrowed brow, silently sulking. Turning your head the opposite way, you see Ymir whispering to Christa, who eyes are wide with shock, the poor thing. Suddenly, Mikasa stands up straight, the unexpected movement making you flinch.
âMy vote is yes for this, President Hange! We have to help them get their reputation back. For ArminâŚandâŚand for ErenâŚâ She stops talking, looking deep in thought at that last part.
Eren? He must be the other friend. The one she no longer hangs out with.
Hange looks over at her, confused. âUhh, we donât technically need to vote on this, but thank you for the vocal support, Mikasa. Look everyone, I know this is unprecedented, but I can assure you: This is going to be beneficial for both parties. They need our help to build back a good reputation; we need their help to further improve ours. Itâs a win-win.â
âWeâre going to be collaborating with them mostly for charity events. But we were thinking we can also have a couple of exchanges, for fun. Oh, by the way, for our new members, exchanges are social events between a sorority and fraternity. We havenât gotten down to the nitty gritty details, but I will update you soon on a schedule of events!â Petra explains.
The president takes over again and ends the chapter meeting, thus ending the conversation on Alpha Tau all together. You and Mikasa gather with the rest of your pledge class to walk back to your dorms. Sasha is the first to bring it up once youâre well away from the house. âSo, what do you ladies think? About the whole Alpha Tau thing?â
Ymir scoffs, âWell, you all certainly know how Annie and I feel. Iâm trying to convince little Christa here to feel the same, but sheâs not having it.â
âI just think we should give them a chance. Just like theyâre giving us a chance, right?â Christa says, as sweet as ever.
After having a few minutes to digest the information, you say, âI agree with Christa. I think we should go in with an open mind. I trust Hange and Petraâs judgement. I donât think theyâd put us in a situation that would harm us. This Erwin Smith guy seems nice enough.â
âItâs not Erwin Smith Iâm worried about,â Annie says.
âAnnie, stop being so cryptic and just tell us what you know!â Sasha exclaims, biting into a piece of bread that she somehow conjured from her pockets.
âThere are these two guys I know in there. One of them isnât so bad. Bertolt. Heâs actually okay. The other, well. Heâs just a straight up dick. Reiner. Reiner Braun. Straight up asshole.â
âWhat makes him such an asshole?â
âHeâs just a typical frat boy. Obnoxious, cocky, a player. The three of us went to the same high school. Theyâre a year older than me.â
âJust because heâs a fuck boy doesnât mean they all are! Arminâs in there, and heâs a total sweetheart! Right Mikasa?â Sasha turns to Mikasa, begging for a comment.
Mikasa stares at the ground with her hands in her pocket. Quietly, she replies, âYes. Armin is a sweetheart.â
âIsnât your other friend in there too? Eren? Whatâs he like?â
You try not to let your curiosity show, but you canât help but perk your ears up to Sashaâs question.
Mikasa stays quiet for a few seconds, before saying, âHeâs nice too.â No more elaboration.
âSee, Annie? All we have to do is avoid this Reiner guy and it should be fine! Donât let one rotten potato spoil the whole bag!â
âWhy does it always seem like youâre talking about potatoes, you doofus?â Annie snaps.
You all veer off into different directions, saying goodbye for the night. As you and Mikasa walk towards your dorm, you let a comfortable silence fall between you, not wanting to cross any lines with your roommate. At the door, Mikasa mutters, âWait.â You turn to face her, listening.
âIâd like to get some things off my chest.â You mentally brace yourself for what sheâs about to reveal to you.
âI know that youâre probably wondering who Eren is. Heâs my best friend. Him, me, and Armin. We all grew up together, but Eren is practically a brother to me. And I know you must have been curious why all of a sudden, Iâm hanging out with you more than them.â She swallows before she continues. âThe truth is, ever since he rushed Alpha Tau, heâs been too busy to hang out with me. Sometimes I think heâs forgotten about me completely. Armin still makes time to see me, but even heâs too busy nowadays. So, I joined a sorority to make more friends and be more social, instead of sulking in my own loneliness. And I donât harbor ill feelings towards Eren. Maybe I did at the start, but not anymore. I justâŚI just want to make sure he doesnât forget about me.â
She stares at the ground the entire time, arms crossed over her chest. âI guess what Iâm trying to say is thank you. For being my friend. And going through this with me. And since weâre going to be seeing a lot of Alpha Tau now, you should know about Eren, since youâll probably be seeing him too.â
This is the most youâve heard her speak. It stuns you for a few seconds. You let a moment of silence pass before you walk towards her and put an arm around her shoulder. âMikasa. Thank you for telling me. I know itâs not easy opening up.â
She looks at you, expression still serious. âItâs not, but I feel like you should know.â
âI appreciate it. Hey, I know it feels like you may have lost a brother, but at least you gained a sister, right?â
Finally, a small smile forms on her lips. âYeah, I guess thatâs one way to look at it.â
âYou should just try talking to him, tell him how you feel,â you suggest as you swipe your ID to open the door to your dorm.
âIâve tried to text him, but he never responds. I canât ever get a hold of him.â
âWell, maybe this collab with Alpha Tau is exactly what you need to reconcile with him.â
âI guess.â
Back in the room, the two of you change into pajamas and start getting ready for bed as you continue to chat about other topics besides Eren. Once in bed, you turn to your side and contemplate the nightâs events.
Thereâs no denying that this partnership with the most popular fraternity on campus excites you. Disregarding the giant shit stain from the bad apples, everyone knows that Alpha Tau are the âcoolâ guys on campus, whatever that means. Maybe this is exactly what you need to work on your confidence. Itâs a good opportunity to meet new people, maybe practice a little bit of flirting. Maybe even make some new friends.
One thing is for sure: You are determined to make this year more exciting than last.
~~~
Erwin Smith, Alpha Tauâs chapter president, stands up straight in the front of the chapter room. His first announcement of the night is regarding âbig brotherâ assignments.
âNew pledge Armin Arlert. Your big brother is Bertolt Hoover.â
Bertolt, who sits in front of them, turns around to give Armin a kind smile, which is returned.
âNew pledge Eren Jaeger. Your big brother is Reiner Braun.â
Right next to Bertolt is blond-haired junior Reiner Braun, who turns to give Eren a cocky smirk before saying, âHope youâre ready to fucking party, man.â
Eren smirks back. âHell yeah. You gonna show me the ropes?â
The blonde only scoffs as he turns back around to face the front.
Eren nudges Armin before paying his attention back to the president. After he reads off the other big brother assignments, he says, âIâd like to give the floor to our vice president, Levi Ackerman.â
âGood evening, everyone. Welcome new members to your first chapter meeting. On a serious note, I have some news that I know most of you are aware of already.â He explains the situation about Nile Dok and the âMPsâ, more or less of what Armin told Eren just a few minutes earlier. âI know itâs a bit of a hit to our numbers, but those members did not exemplify the values of Alpha Tau. President Erwin did what needed to be done.â
âHear hear!â one of the seniors yell, followed by some cheers from the others.
Another senior that Eren met a few days ago, Mike Zacharias, says, âFuck the MPs. And fuck Nile Dok.â
âMike,â Erwin warns from the side. Nile was Erwinâs big brother, unfortunately.
Levi continues. âHonestly, we should be ashamed we let those fucking pricks into our organization in the first place. But whatâs done is done. Now onto my other big announcement. To atone for what those fucking shit stains did, Erwin and I have decided the best way to move forward is to pair up with one of the sororities on campus.â
This news results in an overwhelming round of cheers and hollering from the brothers, to which Eren canât help but join in on. He nudges Armin again, who smiles. Jean, whoâs seated on Arminâs other side, leans in close to whisper, âWho do you think itâs gonna be? I hope itâs the Delta Muâs, theyâve got the hottest chicks.â
Connie chimes in, âEta Iota girls are hot too. Walked by them while they were doing their porch yells last week.â He lets out a low whistle.
âOh yeah! All the sororities had their first chapter last Sunday,â Armin notes.
Levi raises his voice over the commotion. âAlright brothers, settle down, settle down. After a lot of discussion, weâve decided that the sorority weâre pairing with is Sigma Nu Kappa.â
A different outburst fills the room now. There are a few cheers, mostly from the seniors, but there is an overwhelming sound of disappointed groans.
âSigma Nu Kappa? Are you fucking serious?â Reiner grumbles to Bertolt, who just nods with a neutral expression on his face.
Armin, on the other hand, canât help but grin and exclaim, âYes!â
âYou know about them?â Eren asks.
âThatâs Mikasaâs sorority!â he answers, excited.
Eren still canât get over the shock that Mikasa Ackerman, the girl he grew up with over the last ten years, the woman who looks like she couldnât hurt a fly but can actually kick your ass, is now in a sorority. Itâs something he has to see to believe. And given this announcement, heâs going to see it sooner than he expects.
âNow, I know a lot of our brothers arenât familiar with the sisters of Sigma Nu Kappa. This is a great opportunity to get to know them. Most of us seniors are familiar with the other seniors in Sigma Nu Kappa and I can say with full confidence that they are a group of fine, albeit unique, women,â Levi tells them.
Erwin stands up and walks beside Levi, adding, âYes. Itâs in all of our best interests to be respectful and welcoming to the sisters of SNK. As Alpha Tau men should be to all women. I will not tolerate disrespect or harassment of any kind. I am quite close to President Hange ZoĂŤ, so be warned. Any hint of misconduct, you are out.â
âPetra, who is their social chair, and I are working on a schedule of events. We plan to have our first exchange in two weeks, followed by a volunteer event a week after that. Iâll send an email reminder later, along with role assignments for the exchange. Any questions, you can come directly to me. My room is on the second floor.â With that, Levi adjourns the meeting. Before they file out, Levi yells, âPledges. Meet in the kitchen in five minutes. Iâd like to have a word before you leave tonight.â
Armin and Eren tail the rest of their pledge class as they make their way downstairs towards the kitchen.
âThis is exciting! Iâve been curious about this sorority ever since Mikasa told me she was rushing. She said this was her top choice.â
âWhy didnât she say anything to me?â
âIâm sure she tried to, Eren. You donât ever respond to her texts.â
âWell, how am I supposed to respond to a text that just says âErenâ? If she has something to say, she should just say it.â
âOh, Eren,â Armin responds, shaking his head in disappointment.
They gather in the kitchen, waiting for Levi to meet them. He comes down two minutes later, a stern look on his face, as usual.
âPledges. Just wanted to clarify some things. An exchange is a gathering between a sorority and fraternity. I know I said I have some role assignments, but I can assure you, you will not have any assignments during our first exchange with Sigma Nu Kappa. We want you to enjoy your first party as official Alpha Tau brothers.â
Jean responds, âHell yeah. Good shit, Levi!â Marco follows with a cheerful, âYay!â
When the vice president dismisses them, Armin and Eren make their way towards the front door to start walking to their dorm. Before they reach the handle, Reinerâs voice booms from the top of the stairs.
âEren! Armin! Bertolt and I are getting McDonald's. Want to come?âÂ
The best friends look at each other for a second before agreeing with a resounding, âYes!â
A few minutes later, Eren and Armin ride in the back of Bertoltâs Honda Civic while Reiner occupies the passenger seat. Classic 80s rock blasts through the carâs speakers as they ride off campus with the windows rolled down.
Reiner turns the volume lower on the car to speak. âSo, what did you guys think of your first Alpha Tau chapter meeting?â
Armin replies, âIt was cool! Iâm excited to be paired up with Sigma Nu Kappa.â
Reiner scoffs, similar to what Eren heard earlier in the chapter room. âI donât know about these Sigma Nu Kappas. I heard theyâre pretty lame.â
âMy best friend is in SNK, sheâs in the new pledge class,â Armin says, a bit defensively.
âAnnieâs in there too,â Bertolt adds.
Another scoff from the blond. âAnnie? Now I know for a fact theyâre lame if they gave her a bid.â
Eren notices Bertoltâs grip on the steering wheel tighten but doesnât say anything in response.
âHey, Eren. Did Zeke ever tell you how he was my big bro when I first joined? He was a senior when I was a freshman, and he already had two other littles from the previous pledge classes. But he still picked me up. Dude was a legend,â Reiner says.
âI didnât know that. I guess itâs fate that brought us together,â Eren responds, with a deadpan expression.
Reiner laughs. âYouâre a little crazy, you know that? You say some weird shit, but I like you. This is going to be fun.â He turns towards the front and blasts the music on high again, drowning out any potential for further conversation.
Eren nods his head along to the music, leaning his face towards the open window to feel the coolness of the night air against his skin. The breeze blows through his long hair as he repeats the sentiment from Reiner in his head.

A Bento for Kento Masterlist
--------------------
Preparing lunches for Ren has been fun, but making a different type of bento three times a week is really pushing your creativity threshold. Knowing that he isnât picky about eating the same meal every other day, you decide to cook one type of bento throughout the week. Doing it this way has made the whole process less stressful and more manageable.
As for his actual lessons, you remain in the dark. When he comes home Friday afternoon, you ask him, âHow was your first week? Still determined to attend this school?âÂ
He kicks his shoes off and flops down, face first, onto the couch. âYes, very determined.â He flips onto his back and reaches his arms above his head, stretching. âCan we watch a horror movie tonight? Iâm in the mood for something mindless that doesnât make me think so much. I did too much thinking this week.â
You chuckle, agreeing to his suggestion. âYou pick the movie. Nothing too scary, though. I would like to sleep tonight.â
âCan we order pizza too?â he asks, staring at you with his puppy dog eyes. âI really like youâre cooking, but I just want to eat like trash and feel like trash tonight.âÂ
You laugh even louder, sitting beside him to ruffle his hair. âYouâre starting to sound more like an adult. Stop growing up so fast or else youâll be a miserable millennial like me.â
âNever! You can never take away my youth!â he yells, playfully flailing his limbs up in the air.
After some typical back and forth about what toppings to get, the two of you finally agree on what type of pizza to order. While waiting for the delivery, you give your brother the honors of choosing which horror movie to watch, to which he picks the number one on a list of top ten scariest films he looked up on Google. So much for sleeping tonight.Â
~~~
The start of another week means a brand-new bento creation. After searching the Internet for tasty ideas, you decide to make egg salad sandwiches. These were a favorite of yours and Renâs growing up. To kick it up a notch, you use high quality Shokupan bread, courtesy of your favorite bakery nearby. Hell, you even cut the crusts off. Impressed with yourself, you deliberate if you should change careers to become a professional chef.Â
As you delicately place them in the blue bento, you hear his footsteps approach the kitchen. âYum! Egg salad!â He looks over your shoulder to peek. âAnd with no crust?!â
You turn your head to face him, grinning. âYup. Pretty fancy, huh?â
âItâs amazing! The bread looks so fluffy,â he notices, poking at it. He hovers over the bowl of egg salad, still half full. He stares at it for a moment before asking, âIs there a lot left?â
âYeah, looks like it. Iâll eat it some of it later. Maybe I can give the rest to the neighbors â â
âCan you pack me an extra then? Iâll eat it!â He starts opening up the cupboards, looking for another box.Â
âYou want two bentos?âÂ
âYes! Please! Iâll eat them both, I promise!âÂ
Youâre surprised, but also flattered. Has your cooking improved so much that your teenaged brother actually craves two servings of your food? Maybe you really should become a chef.
Ren continues to slam the cupboards, his search for another container growing futile. After youâve had enough, you head to your room and yell out, âStop! I think I have one in my room, hold on.â
After you find what youâre looking for in your closet, you return to the kitchen, bright red Hello Kitty bento box in hand. âLetâs use this. Do you mind?â
He smiles wide, all his teeth showing mischievously. âThis is perfect.â His enthusiasm throws you off. Teenage boys sure are getting weirder and weirder.
~~~
âHello mentor!â Ren greets as he enters the conference room.
Nanami lifts his head up to return his greeting. âHello Nakamura, did you have a nice weekend?âÂ
Ren sits down at an empty desk, unzipping his backpack to retrieve a notebook and pen, all while recounting his weekend activities. Nanami listens intently, simultaneously pleased with how prompt and prepared his student is for their lessons.Â
After exchanging a few more pleasantries, they start todayâs class. They delve into a more intense subject: curses. They review previous missions that Nanami himself participated in, some of the content being disturbing and gruesome for the average person. To his surprise, Ren doesnât seem fazed. When he asks questions, he is analytical and intrigued. Nanami appreciates this, as he himself likes to separate sentimentality from work.Â
They go through three different case studies until itâs time for a break. He expects that Ren has another delicious feast ready for him in his backpack. Heâs had one every single day theyâve had their lessons. Last week, it was the same for all three days. He wonders if itâs different this time.
For some reason, Nanami keeps forgetting to find another bakery that sells ham and cheese sandwiches. He is without a lunch again. He gets up from his desk and walks down the hall into the break room to prepare his tea. This will have to do for now.Â
He returns to the conference room, freshly brewed green tea in hand, noticing that Ren is already halfway through his meal. Egg salad sandwiches today, one of Nanamiâs favorites.Â
Back at his seat, he is shocked, and horrified, to find a Hello Kitty bento box waiting for him on top of his desk.
Whipping his head towards his student, he asks nervously, âWhat is this?â
Ren smiles, cheeks stuffed like chipmunk. âItâs for you!â Bits of egg salad come flying out of his mouth. âSorry,â he mutters, swallowing his food all at once. âI couldnât stand another day seeing you just drink your tea. I had my sister make an extra.âÂ
Nanami stares at him, then at Hello Kitty. Her black eyes and red ribbon peering into his soul.Â
âWell, arenât you going to eat it? Itâs not like Hello Kitty is a curse,â Ren snorts, amused at his own joke.
Still hesitant about this odd situation, he clarifies, âAre you sure you donât want this? Your sister packed this for you.â Itâs not for me, he thinks.
He munches on a cucumber slice, responding, âThe only reason I asked her to pack an extra was so I can give it to you. Itâs the least I can do since youâre teaching me so much.â
Thereâs a lump in his throat, an unusual sensation Nanami isnât familiar with. Itâs been a while since someone showed this kind of generosity to him. It wasnât as if people in his life mistreated him. Itâs just nice to be acknowledged.Â
He remains standing over the desk when Ren mentions, âHello Kitty was not my choice. You can blame my sister for that. It was the only one she could find. But I think it fits your personality perfectly,â he teases.
Cracking a tiny smile, he says, âAs long as the food is good, I donât mind it.â He finally sits down and opens the box, bidding farewell to Hello Kittyâs face in the process.Â
Underneath the cover is an egg salad sandwich, exactly like the one Ren just devoured. He notices that itâs on Shokupan bread. Good choice, he muses. He handles it with care, relishing the softness, appreciating the meticulously trimmed edges. Once he bites in, his eyes almost roll to the back of his head. Creamy, pillowy, not too salty, and slightly sweet. Itâs simple and luxurious all at the same time. Purely exquisite.
Maybe itâs because this was his first taste of real food all day. Maybe itâs because it seems like a gift from his student. Maybe itâs because it makes him feel special. Whatever the reason, he can admit to himself that he is really enjoying this. Heâs thankful to be wearing glasses to prevent his pupil from witnessing the dumb expression on his face. Itâs embarrassing. Out of character.Â
âPretty good, right? It was our favorite growing up,â Ren mentions, finishing off the rest of his cucumber slices. âShe got this bread from a bakery near us. Said the type of bread makes all the difference. It all tastes the same to me.â He has his feet up on the desk now and starts to rub his belly, relaxed and well nourished.
âYour sister is right; it does make all the difference.â Nanami swallows the last bit of his first helping, then starts nibbling on the second. âThis wouldnât be as tasty if it was on generic grocery store bread.â
Ren stifles a laugh and leans further back in his chair to give him an amused look. âHa, I didnât expect you to use the word âtastyâ. Itâs funny hearing it from you.â
He wipes his mouth. âWell, it is tasty.â
âIâll make sure my sister knows her egg salad is tasty,â
âWhy are you saying it like that?â He frowns at his student, but when he only responds with a snicker, he chooses not to ask the question again.Â
He finishes the rest of the box, leaving no crumbs behind. Hello Kitty returns in plain view as he places the cover back on, handing it to Ren. âThank you, Nakamura. This was a pleasant surprise.â
âNo problem, mentor! Like I said, itâs the least I could do. Iâm learning so much from you!â Ren beams at him while he puts both containers away, notebook and pen placed back in front of him.
âShall we continue the lesson then?â
They go over three more case studies until itâs time to go. Ren asks well thought out questions, taking diligent notes all the while. Nanami explains a few techniques he used in one case study that he personally handled.Â
After Ren leaves, he gathers up his suitcase and prepares for his journey home. Heâs not as exhausted as he was last week, which heâs thankful for. I should probably find a cafĂŠ, he thinks, scrolling through his phone to look up locations nearby. He wonât subject himself to a single cup of green tea at lunch any longer. That sandwich gave him the energy he needed, but he doesnât want to assume this is a recurring thing. He finds a cafĂŠ close to the office, setting a reminder for himself to stop by before their next lesson. This will have to do for now.
~~~
Youâre already wrapping up work when Ren comes home. âHey! How was today? Learn anything new?â you ask, closing your laptop.Â
He drops his backpack on the floor and sits on the couch, yawning. âIâm learning a ton. I feel like Iâve already gone through half my notebook with all these notes!âÂ
You sit next to him, watching him open his backpack to retrieve his notebook. As he flips through the pages, you notice a variety of scribbles, as well as some strange doodles of little monsters with bulging eyes. The last page he lands on has a drawing of one long line with hash marks scattered evenly across it. There are notes scrawled around it, the numbers â7â and â3â popping up continuously.
Oh god, this is some cult shit. Panic begins to set in. Youâre tempted to start interrogating him. Before you lose your cool, you listen to your inner voice reminding you to trust him.Â
Sensing your internal crisis, Ren smiles and waves his hand in front of your face. âSorry, I know it looks weird, but I promise itâs good.â
What the hell does that mean?! Itâs good?!  His response doesnât alleviate your worries, but as you gaze at his precious face, you realize that heâs putting so much work into whatever this is. It must really be important to him.Â
You force a grin and state, âIf you say itâs good, then itâs all good.â You reach into his backpack to grab the two empty boxes. âWow! You must have really liked the sandwiches. I canât believe you ate both!âÂ
âYeah, they were amazing! So tasty! It reminded me of the first meal I ever had when Mom and Dad took me in. It was the first time I ever met you. I ate my whole sandwich in just a few bites, and you gave me half of yours without even thinking for a second. Iâll never forget that.â He smiles at you affectionately. âActually, I gave the extra one to â âÂ
He pauses, noticing the tears streaking down your face, nose sniffling noisily.
âYou-hic-you-hic hic-remember that?â you manage to blurt out, your face getting wetter from your embarrassing tears and snot. You promised yourself you wouldnât get emotional if he brought this up, but you canât help it!
Concerned, he faces you and places a hand on your shoulder. âIâm sorry, I didnât mean to make you cry! I was just telling you how good it was! Itâs a happy memory. Iâm happy.â
You wipe your sleeve across your cheeks. âI-hic-just want to make sure Iâm-hic-being a good sister.â It takes another minute to steady your breathing. âI know you canât tell me everything, but if these bentos are the only thing I can do to support you right now, Iâll keep doing it! I was surprised when you asked for another one. Iâm just so happy that you like it!âÂ
He gives your shoulder a small squeeze, smiling. âYouâre the best sister ever. I mean it.â
Before you get emotional again, you stand up to wash the boxes in the sink. Halfway through, you remember him trying to tell you something right before you interrupted him with the waterworks. Nothing else is mentioned about it the rest of the night, so you leave it be, thinking it must not be important.Â
~~~
Wednesday comes around and Nanami finally remembers to visit the cafĂŠ to pick up his lunch. Unfortunately for him, no ham and cheese. He ends up settling for the less satisfying turkey sandwich.Â
He heads up to their usual conference room and settles in. Within minutes, Ren arrives, greeting him as he takes his usual spot at one of the empty desks. They continue their lesson on curses and different abilities that have been used to exorcise them. Nanami references several Jujutsu sorcerers and explains each of their âinnate techniques.â He asks Ren if he is aware of any special abilities he might have exhibited throughout his lifetime, to which his pupil acknowledges several odd occurrences he experienced as a child. This helps put some of the pieces together. Heâs pleased at the progress they are making.Â
They take their break earlier than usual, their stomachs growling with hunger. Nanami hears his student digging through his backpack while he reaches into his suitcase for the sandwich he picked up earlier. Heâs startled when Ren appears next to him, holding out the wretched Hello Kitty vessel.Â
âHere you go!â he says, placing it on Nanamiâs desk, walking back to his own to start munching happily on an egg salad sandwich.Â
He wasnât expecting another bento box today. He actually came prepared this time with his own meal. But he canât shake this feeling of guilt, as if it would be a sin against humanity if he denied this delicious treat. As if Hello Kitty herself would scorn him for life.Â
Also, heâd be lying to himself if he said he wasnât secretly hoping for this.Â
Luckily, he hasnât taken the food out of his briefcase yet. Iâll just eat it for dinner, he thinks, placing it back to the bottom of his case.Â
He stares at Hello Kitty, welcoming her reappearance on his desk. He thanks Ren, then opens the container to start eating. Itâs exactly how it was on Monday. Tasty. âAre you sure your sister doesnât mind making an additional box?â
âShe doesnât mind at all. I think she gets a kick out of it. She actually got emotional about it the other day.â
As he recounts the story, Nanami canât help but admire his student for remembering a touching memory over something as simple as a sandwich. He also respects the way he describes his sister. She seems nice, he speculates, picturing what she might look like, just so he can put a face to a name.Â
Deciding that his thought is innocent enough, he comments, âShe seems nice, Nakamura. You are lucky to have a sister like that.â Immediately feeling awkward saying something sentimental out loud, he adds, âI guess Iâm lucky too because Iâm reaping the benefits of her generosity. Even if I do have to see this damn cat every time.â
Ren chuckles. âWell, get used to it. Youâre going to see a lot more of Hello Kitty, whether you like it or not.âÂ
Nanami smiles. He definitely could get used to this.Â
Summary: You do some internet sleuthing. Ren visits Jujutsu High for the first time. Nanami keeps a secret in his pocket. And a wild Gojo appears!
Notes: This chapterâs bento is inspired by this recipe:Â Chicken Meatballs. Thanks for all those that have read, reblogged, liked, and/or commented so far, hope youâre enjoying it!

--------------------
This weekâs bento features teriyaki chicken meatballs over a bed of white rice with a side of steamed broccoli. You elegantly drizzle teriyaki sauce on the top, the finishing touch is a sprinkle of sesame seeds. Aesthetics matter, you think to yourself, impressed by your arrangement. You repeat the meticulous process inside the Hello Kitty bento box.
When youâre done, you admire your creation. An idea pops in your head, inspired by the many viral videos youâve watched. As a cute, personal touch, a small note can be included in the meal. Itâs usually words of affirmation, sometimes even a funny joke. You take two sticky notes from your desk and write a different message on each, smiling proudly as you insert each one inside the cover of the containers.
Ren comes out of his room, ready for his Monday lesson. He joins you at the table to eat breakfast. âMorning, sis!â
âMorning! Are you excited for your lessons this week?â you ask, taking a bite out of your toast.
âYeah! We might do one of our lessons out of the office. Nanami said he wants to show me around the school. Iâm excited.â He takes a forkful of eggs into his mouth, grinning.Â
âThat sounds fun. Itâs nice to change scenery once in a while.â You take a sip of coffee. âSo do you like your mentor? Nanami, right?â
âYup, heâs pretty cool. At first, he seems super serious, which he totally is. But I think weâre getting along well. He knows Iâm taking these lessons seriously. I think thatâs why he likes me.â
âIs he the grumpy old teacher type?â you ask, jokingly.
He chuckles. âHeâs definitely grumpy. But heâs not old. Heâs probably your age.â
This sparks your curiosity. You canât help but wonder what he looks like, just to put a face to a name.
Ren continues. âAnyways, weâre making a lot of progress together. Heâs a really good teacher. Heâs opened my eyes to a lot of things.â
Part of your smile fades as you say, âWell, it sounds like youâre learning a lot from this Nanami guy. I hope youâre not planning on replacing me with him.â Youâre kidding, of course, though there is a hint of actual jealously there.Â
Smirking, he reassures, âDonât be jealous, sis! Heâs not as fun as you are, trust me. I told you, heâs super serious. Sometimes I wonder what he does fun. He probably reads.â
âHey, thereâs absolutely nothing wrong with that!â you exclaim, throwing a grape at him. âHe sounds interesting. I should meet him one day, just to size him up.â
In all seriousness, you actually want to check this guy out, confirm that this man isnât negatively influencing your sibling in any way. You still have no idea what these âlessonsâ consist of, or what this Jujutsu High is. This creep could be teaching your baby brother how to be a deviant.
Finished with breakfast, he gets up to retrieve his backpack, bentos packed securely in place. âYou have nothing to worry about. Heâs a good guy.â He pats you affectionately on the shoulder before leaving.
You sit at the table for a little while longer, contemplating while you play with the stray crumbs on your plate. Minutes later, you text Ren:
You: Whatâs your mentorâs full name again?
Ren: Kento Nanami
Ren: why?
You: just curious, thanks!
Let the internet sleuthing begin.
~~~
This week, Nanami plans to take Ren on a tour of Jujutsu High. He insisted Gojo visit sometime on Monday to give Ren an overview of the rules and general layout, hoping to prepare his student before he first steps foot on campus. It can be overwhelming for a first timer, heâs well aware of that.
As expected, Gojo does not give him an exact time for when heâll arrive. Nanamiâs attempts at extracting an answer from his flake of a friend are useless. Iâll get there when I get there, Nanamin! Iâm a busy man! is all Gojo texts him, after being pestered for the third time about his current location.
The day isnât wasted, however. In typical fashion, Nanami planned accordingly with some new material to teach Ren, already predicting this type of behavior from Gojo. Lunch time approaches and he still hasnât shown up. Growing impatient, Nanami decides to take their break now. If Gojo pops in while theyâre eating, heâll just have to wait.
Ren hands the Hello Kitty bento box to Nanami, this gesture becoming a small tradition between them. âThank you, Nakamura,â he says, walking over to his desk. âIâm going to the break room to make my tea. Would you like anything from the vending machine?â
âHm, maybe a Pocari Sweat?âÂ
After Nanami brews his tea and a purchases Renâs beverage, he returns to the room, ready for another delicious treat courtesy of the older sister. As he sets the drink on Renâs desk, he sneaks a peek at his open container, spotting meatballs and some type of glaze over a bed of rice. The smell is intoxicating, his mouth watering from the inviting aroma.
Surprisingly, the food is untouched. Usually, when Nanami comes back from the breakroom, his student is halfway finished with his meal. He glances over at Ren to see whatâs distracting him. He is staring at the inside cover of his bento box, a warm smile spread across his face.
He looks at Nanami and answers, âMy sister left me a note.â He flips over the cover to show it. In neat handwriting, the memo reads:
Happy Monday, booger! Have the best day ever!
A little heart and smiley face are scribbled at the end.
Nanami raises a brow, amused. âBooger?â
Ren chuckles. âJust a little nickname she calls me sometimes. Maybe thereâs another one for me in your box! Can you tell me what it says when you see it?â
Agreeing, Nanami sits at his desk. For some reason, heâs nervous to open it. As if heâs intruding on something intimate, something personal. He uncovers it slowly, examining the top for a note. In the same handwriting as the other, a message is displayed:
The world is a better place with you in it. Always remember that.
Thereâs strange tightness in his chest upon reading those words. He glances at Ren, who is now his normal self, devouring his meatballs whole. Focused back on his desk, he quietly takes the note off the cover and pockets it.
Ren, mouth full, asks, âIs there anything?â
Nanami contemplates for a few seconds, then responds, âNo, there isnât.â He starts eating a meatball, which tastes even better than he imagined. Though, his mind is distracted by the fact that he just lied about something so trivial, so insignificant. Why?
âAh, okay.â Observing his own note again, Ren laughs. âCanât believe sheâs still calling me booger! Ha!â He takes a sip of Pocari Sweat and continues to eat, blissfully unaware that his own mentor is hiding a secret in his pants pocket.
Nanami stuffs more food into his mouth in silence, questioning his own motives regarding this damn piece of paper. His hand slides into his pocket, feeling for it, remembering the words scrawled over it.
The world is a better place with you in it. Always remember that.
He knows it wasnât written for him. Of course he knows that.
However, thereâs an odd sensation coursing through his being. An unusual tightness in his chest spurred by a simple statement attached to the back of Hello Kittyâs face. Whatever this sensation is, Nanami reasons that this is what compelled him to lie about the note.Â
A few more moments of contemplation, he realizes something as he finishes his last meatball. The true reason why he is acting this way.
He wants to pretend itâs for him.
Gojo finally arrives as soon as Ren and Nanami are finished with their food. âHello, my dear friends!â he greets happily.
Nanami wipes his mouth with a napkin and closes the box. Just as heâs about to hand the empty container to Ren, his friend squeals, âNanamin, wait. What is that?!â Even behind the blindfold, itâs obvious that Gojoâs eyes are filled with glee.
âIt was my lunch,â he answers, nonchalant.
Gojoâs grin widens, as he squeals again. âI need to take a picture of this! You and Hello Kitty! Nanamin, this is just adorable.â He takes his phone out and starts snapping away before Nanami can hide his face behind his hand.
âStop it. You are awful.â He slides the bento over to Ren, still trying to conceal himself from his annoying friendâs ridicule.
Gojo turns to Ren, showing him what he captured. âIsnât this so precious? Little Nanami with Hello Kitty. This day canât get any better.â
They giggle with each other while Nanami sighs heavily, palm pressed against his forehead in aggravation. âCan we just get on with this, Gojo? And delete those photos immediately.â
âNo way. The world is better a place now because of these,â Gojo teases, swiping through his phone, a smug grin plastered on his face.
Nanami begins to blush, remembering the note. He sticks his hand in his pocket and feels for it again, making sure itâs still there. He clears his throat, speaking a bit louder. âOkay, enough. Letâs move on.â
After more snickering between Gojo and Ren, they finally get back on track. As Gojo introduces Jujutsu High to Ren, Nanami takes this opportunity to zone out. He stares at his desk, thinking of food, Hello Kitty, and his dumb friend taking those incriminating photos. Occasionally, he brushes his hand over his pants, rubbing the outline of the note. The one that is not his. Whatâs the harm in pretending? It makes him feel good. It makes him feel appreciated.
He slyly removes it out of his pocket and sets it inside his suitcase, where itâs safe. The last thing he needs is Gojo having any more leverage against him than he already has. If it accidentally falls into the wrong hands, specifically Gojoâs, heâd never hear the end of it.
~~~
During your break, you decide to investigate Renâs teacher. You type the name âKento Nanamiâ into the search bar. The top result is a blog post from a finance company youâve never heard of. Clicking on it, you notice the article is a few years old. It features five different employees from the company, each one having a picture with a small blurb beside it. You scroll towards the middle of the page and find what youâre looking for.
Name: Kento Nanami
Age: 23
Position: Senior Stockbroker
About: Kento Nanami is one of our youngest and most successful stockbrokers. He started working for our company straight out of high school and has excelled ever since. Hobbies include eating, drinking, cooking, and reading. He enjoys helping others and has been an asset to us during the onboarding process for new employees. His favorite part of working for this company is the salary because it helps him fund his addiction to bread.
You laugh out loud at the last part. Then, you notice his picture. Itâs a professional headshot, probably taken in the office for the purpose of this post. His blond hair is parted on the side with loose strands falling over his forehead. He has a sharp nose and cheeks that are slightly sunken, maybe due to the stress of being a stockbroker. The spotted tie heâs wearing over his navy-blue button up stands out. Itâs an interesting pattern, but for some reason, it works. His expression is neutral, neither smiling, nor frowning. He looks serious, just as Ren described him.Â
You stare at him a bit longer and you smile to yourself.
He is handsome.
But why the sudden change in career? Based on his description, he was doing well as a stockbroker. Why would he leave? And what exactly is he teaching your younger brother? Surely it isnât lessons on stockbroking. Or is it? Is this some sort of pyramid scheme? They have their lessons in an office building, which is very suspicious to begin with.Â
You continue your web search and find nothing else outside of his previous occupation in finance. He doesnât have any public social media pages and there is nothing mentioning current employment. Curious, you search Jujutsu High, only to be redirected to pages related to Jiu Jitsu, the Brazilian martial art. Anything related to Jujutsu doesnât exist on public record.
Your inner alarm bells are ringing. This is strange. Youâve made it almost a month blindly trusting your brother, not asking too many questions. How much longer can you hold out for? You have no clue what Ren has gotten himself into and the constant mystery surrounding it has you worried.
Also, you know nothing about this Nanami fellow. He could be a creepy cult leader or a shady ex-stockbroker roping innocent youths into a Ponzi scheme, hiding behind an attractive suit and a pretty face. Either way, itâs suspicious.Â
Retrieving a small journal from your drawer, you jot down questions you want to ask Ren. You need answers to give you peace of mind. The rest of the summer canât go on like this. If something terrible were to happen to him, you will never be able to forgive yourself. You have to know the truth.Â
~~~
On Wednesday, Nanami brings Ren to Jujutsu High. He can tell that Renâs mind is blown as soon as he steps foot through the protective barrier, jaw dropping and examining the campus, speechless.Â
They walk through the training grounds, watching students spar with each other. Ren observes them carefully, looking away briefly only to scribble notes. They watch for nearly an hour, Nanami explaining their moves and typical training regiments that are expected of first years.Â
Their tour through campus continues. Ren gazes up at the buildings, appreciating the architecture. It reminds Nanami of his experience as a Jujutsu High student. He doesnât dwell on the past all too often but being here makes him reminisce, as if he never left.Â
Currently, there are no classes in session, so they take this opportunity to peek into each of the empty classrooms, ending with Gojoâs. There are plenty of windows, a sparse number of desks, and one big blackboard, displaying the remnants of whatever was taught in the most recent lesson. Nanami takes a couple of minutes to go over this with Ren.
Afterwards, they decide to take their break in one of the courtyards. Nanami is handed his usual bento box with Hello Kitty. He looks around to make sure Gojo isnât nearby to tease him. With the coast clear, he uncovers the container, finding a note attached to the inside again. He purposefully positions himself across from Ren so that he can read the message in secret. Glancing over at his student, who is distracted by his own meal, Nanami focuses on the familiar handwriting:
Have the best day ever! I love you!
Followed by three hand drawn hearts in a row.
His lip twitches into a small smile, admiring the words in front of him. Once again, he removes it and secures it in his pocket. Heâs not exactly sure why heâs keeping them. Maybe he likes having it within reach for a quick pick-me-up. Yesterday, he met with Gojo to exorcise a low-grade curse, and when he was home, he took Mondayâs note out of his briefcase to read it again:Â The world is a better place with you in it. Always remember that.
The words replayed in his head as he soaked in the bath that night. It lingered in his mind as he prepared dinner, even when he was in bed, staring up at the ceiling, trying to fall asleep. That message gives him validation. What heâs doing now as a Jujutsu Sorcerer, and even as a mentor, makes a difference in the world. He is important.
However, this new note offers a different reaction, right in the pit of his stomach. A strange, fluttering feeling. He canât remember the last time someone told him, âI love you.â In fact, heâs barely heard that phrase throughout his entire adult life.
Is he this desperate for affection? Enough to pretend that these words are actually for him? Heâs actually envious of Ren for having someone like this in his life. A person who constantly reminds him how much he is loved, how special he is to this world. When will Nanami experience this for himself? He wonders if that will ever happen.Â
He catches himself, scoffing as he continues to eat. Itâs silly, sentimental, and immature for him to be feeling this way. This is unlike him.Â
Ren breaks the silence, bringing Nanami back from his deep thoughts. âHey Nanami, words of wisdom from my sister. âIn life, we should all aim to be like meatballs: Well-seasoned and well-rounded.ââ He flashes a smirk as he lets the joke sink in.
Nanami genuinely chuckles at the corny pun. âClever.â
âShe made huge ones today, just for fun. Wanna see?â Ren offers, scrolling through his phone. He faces his screen towards Nanami, showing a picture of a woman around Nanamiâs age, wearing a black apron over pajamas. She smiles brightly at the camera, holding two massive meatballs in her hands, like trophies.
âShe was so proud of them she had me take a picture,â Ren laughs, pulling his phone away. Â
It isnât the giant hunks of meat that captures Nanamiâs attention. Itâs her smile, bright and endearing. Inviting and welcoming. The second thing he notices are her pajamas, obscured partially by the apron she wears over it. They are wasabi green in color with different types of sushi as the pattern. Itâs cute. As much as Nanami despises using that word, thereâs no other way to describe it.
And itâs not just the pajamas. She is cute.Â
He almost chokes on his meatball upon this revelation. Guilt sweeps over his body, ashamed that such a thought comes to his mind in front of his student. In front of her brother. He doesnât even know this woman. One picture and heâs already thinking sheâs cute.
A blush creeps up on his cheeks as he clenches his jaw, uncomfortable with the flurry of thoughts rushing into his head. He tries his hardest to stop thinking of her, but itâs too late. He imagines her standing in front of him smiling, holding out the Hello Kitty bento box filled with glorious food, reciting the words she scrawled on those pieces of paper.Â
The world is a better place with you in it. Always remember that. I love you, Nanami.
His entire face is hot, certain that itâs red all over. Thankfully, Ren is distracted by his phone as he munches on a piece of broccoli lazily.
Nanami canât believe himself. Heâs making up scenarios in his head about a woman heâs never even met before. No one should see him like this, so it takes all his willpower to calm down and remove all these ridiculous thoughts from his head.
With perfect timing, Gojo joins them in the courtyard, eating an apple and chatting with Ren. He takes a moment to tease Nanami, Hello Kitty still in front of him, but he doesnât have the energy to care. Instead, heâs focused on appearing calm and stoic.
He decides for himself that he wants to know more about Renâs sister, mentally noting what type of questions to ask without giving his true intentions away. Ren constantly praises his sister, itâs only natural for Nanami to wonder what sheâs really like. The woman behind the bento.Â
Itâs just curiosity, Nanami tells himself. Thatâs all it is. Nothing more.
~~~
Friday arrives and you send your brother off with his two bentos. Tonight, youâre going to demand the truth. Not every single detail, but anything to put your mind at ease. You plan to butter him up first by going to the local street food fair and buying him all the Yakitori he desires. Then, maybe after some delicious soft serve, youâll ambush him.
The best plans begin with food, right?
~~~
Gojo suggests taking Ren on a low-risk mission, which Nanami hesitantly agrees to. Heâs aware his pupil will not be the one fighting; heâs only there to observe. Still, heâs nervous. Although more mature than some other kids his age, he is a child that Nanami has temporarily taken under his wing.
On Friday, they stay in the office for the first half of the day, going over every possible detail he can about this mission. They agree to eat before heading out, following their usual routine: Ren distributes the bentos, Nanami heads down the hall to brew his tea and grab a drink from the vending machine for Ren. The two of them sit at their desks, eating their lunch while exchanging casual conversation.Â
Today, Nanamiâs note says:Â Canât wait to spend this weekend watching movies and baking cookies with you!Thereâs a doodle of the Cookie Monster surrounded by chocolate chip cookies. He takes it, sliding it into his briefcase, wondering what movies they enjoy watching together. He smiles thinking of the cookies, how wonderful their house will smell as they bake in the oven.
He looks over at Ren. âAny words of wisdom today?â
Ren shakes his head and responds, âNope. All she said was âHappy Friday to the best brother ever.ââ He stares at the note with a small frown.
âWhatâs wrong, Nakamura?â
He sighs, setting his fork down. âI donât know. I feel guilty. I havenât told my sister anything, and sheâs been so great and supportive, but I justâŚâ He stops, unsure what to say next.
âI understand where youâre coming from. What we do...well, itâs not easy to explain.â Â
âExactly. Like, what do I even tell her? Hey sis, I think my biological parents were involved with some curse users and killed. Then I somehow inherited these strange powers and now I can see curses. How crazy would she think I am?!â
âWell, that is the truth, isnât it?â
Ren scratches his head anxiously, not responding. Then, Nanami says, âYou always talk about how supportive your sister is. Donât you think you should give her some credit? She might be more understanding than you think.â
Still frowning, Ren replies, âYeah, maybe youâre right. I just have to tell it to her straight and hope for the best. I mean, weâre going on a small mission today, right? We might be going on bigger ones in the future. What if something happens to me? Sheâs gonna see my mangled body and not even know what happened. I canât do that to her. I wonât do that to her.â He goes back to eating his meatball, brows knit in deep thought.
Nanami is honestly impressed. Ren is a teenager, but heâs surprisingly mature and responsible. âSo, do you think youâll tell your sister tonight?â
âI think so. Weâre planning to go to this street food festival nearby. Once weâre full of Takoyaki, Iâll tell her.â
Sounds fun, Nanami muses. âI hope your talk goes well.â He gives Ren a small smile, then returns to his lunch.
âDo you like street food, mentor?â Ren wonders, sipping on his drink.
âI do. I like Takoyaki as much as anyone, but Iâm partial towards Taiyaki.â Pancake batter filled with sweetened red bean paste and shaped like a fish. Of course itâs Nanamiâs favorite.
âHa, youâre the same as my sister. She loves Taiyaki.â
Grinning, he wonders what other foods she might like. What other things they have in common with each other. Trying to play it cool, Nanami asks, âWhatâs your favorite, Nakamura?â
âOh, itâs definitely Yakitori. I love meat!â Ren exclaims. He turns to face Nanami. âHey, do you want to go to the festival with us? Iâm sure my sister wouldnât mind.â
Nanamiâs heart thumps, actually considering it. Street food on a Friday night sounds amazing, but he should decline the offer. Tonight will be important for both Ren and his sister. The last thing they need is a gloomy Nanami hovering over them like a rain cloud.
âThatâs alright. You have important matters to discuss, so I donât want to intrude.â He pauses for a few seconds before adding, âBut thank you for the invite.â
Ren smiles politely. âMaybe next time then. Iâd really like you to meet her.â
Nanami thinks it at first, then decides to say it out loud.
cw: it gets a tad suggestive at one point, but itâs still pretty tame :)Â
Summary: Ren reveals the truth. You make some questionable Google searches. Nanami finally gets his ham and cheese sandwich.
Notes: This chapter's bento is inspired by the tasty looking ham and cheese sandwich from Episode 13 of the anime. This is for you, bakery girl, we love you! Let me know if youâd like to be tagged in the next chapter(s). Thanks for all those that have read, reblogged, liked, and/or commented so far! I appreciate it so much.
--------------------
Itâs Monday, the start of a new week. Youâre already awake when your alarm rings, staring up at the ceiling of your bedroom, remembering last Friday nightâs festivities.
After you and your brother stuffed your faces at the street food fair, Ren finally told you everything.
He told you about his birth parents and how they were involved with some shady people called âCurse Usersâ. He shared his thoughts about the unusual circumstances of their deaths and that he determines that they were killed because they were trying to leave all that behind once he was born. He explained how he could see âcursesâ, which he mentioned was âlike seeing ghosts, except they are way uglier and mostly stupid.â
The truth about his lessons with Nanami was revealed; apparently heâs being taught how to exorcise curses. And that this mentor of his is actually a super strong âgrade 1 sorcererâ, and not a regular high school teacher. He even described Jujutsu High and how itâs supposedly the best institution for people like him. âI want to become a powerful Jujutsu sorcerer so I can help people and make the world a better place,â he said.
All you could do was listen with intrigue and astonishment. Plus a dozen other emotions you couldnât really process in that moment.
As you lie in bed this morning, you think back at your childhood. Were there any signs of this back then? You remember an incident when you were walking home together. You took a different route that day and passed by a creepy, abandoned house. Ren stopped dead in his tracks, peering into the windows, as if he could see something. That must have been a curse, right? How about all those other times he would stare at people on the street? Maybe he was focused on the curses, rather than the people. He mentioned how some can linger around humans without them even knowing. You remember this vividly because it creeped you out.
Then, there were those nights after Ren moved in. It was expected that he would still be traumatized by his parentsâ deaths. But you specifically remember hearing him cry about âthe shadowsâ and âmonstersâ while Mom and Dad comforted him. This went on for weeks until one day, he announced at the dinner table, âIâm not scared anymoreâ with so much determination on his face. You were confused, but your parents just looked at him lovingly and ruffled his hair. No questions asked. You make a mental reminder to have a long talk with your parents once theyâre back from vacation. Clearly they know more about this situation than you do.
Youâre aware that your brother has some odd quirks, but itâs never bothered you. It still doesnât. Itâs what you love about him. Heâs always been your weirdo booger. Sure, he has this morbid side to him, but above all, he is sweet and thoughtful. He marches to his own beat proudly. Heâs a good, genuine person. Despite not being blood related, the unconditional love has been there from the start. Ever since your parents brought him home all those years ago, you wanted to look out for him, as a big sister should. Mom and Dad love him as a son, and you love him as a brother. Nothing about his past, present, or future will change that.Â
The two of you spent the rest of the weekend together normally. You watched movies, baked cookies, and took a few walks to the park. Whenever Ren played videos games online with his friends, you searched the Internet for anything to help you better understand. Googling âwhat do I do if my brother sees ghostsâ did not help. Neither did âhow to kill a curseâ. You made sure to delete your embarrassing browser history before Ren could see.Â
All in all, nothing has changed. You just know the truth now.
Does it shatter your perception of the world and reality as you know it? Yes. Is it unsettling knowing curses are out there, floating around and wreaking havoc, invisible to the ordinary humanâs eye? Definitely. But at least you know that Ren isnât getting roped into some pyramid scheme, like you originally thought. And that heâs not joining a cult.
Well, youâre still not entirely convinced that itâs not a cult.
Most importantly, heâs learning how to stop curses and curse users. You canât blame him for wanting to learn any of this, considering what happened to his birth parents.
You toss to your side and finally shut off the alarm thatâs been blaring for the past five minutes, too lost in thought to pay attention to it. Before you get up to start breakfast and prepare the bentos, Renâs words replay in your mind:
I want to become a powerful Jujutsu sorcerer so I can help people and make the world a better place.Â
Even though most of what he admitted to you sounds like elements straight from a horror movie, knowing he wants to do good is something you can live with.
~~~
Nanami arrives to the office early on Monday. As he sits at his desk waiting for Renâs arrival, he recalls Friday afternoonâs mission.
They were sent to a burned down apartment building nearby. Gojo reported that there was a small infestation of Fly Heads that could be easily dealt with, so it was safe for Ren to tag along. A stray appeared randomly as they explored the first floor. Nanami took this as a learning opportunity. He captured it in a small cage and had Ren observe it, all while explaining the different ways to eliminate it. This was also a way for Nanami to confirm that Ren can truly see curses, which he can.
Once they encountered the infestation on the top floor, Nanami had Ren hide in a safe position so that he could observe from a distance. He easily eliminated the curses using his blunt sword, all while explaining exactly what he was doing. Ren was staring at him in awe as he was feverishly taking notes.
They took the Fly Head back to the office as some kind of souvenir. Nanami could tell that Ren was reluctant to let it go, so he agreed that they could keep it, expression giddy as they locked it up in one of the desk drawers.Â
Nanami chuckles to himself as he opens the drawer to check on the curse, still safely secured.
âMorning, mentor! Is our friend still here?â Ren drops his backpack and stands beside Nanami, observing their new pet.
âHey there little guy!â Ren coos, wiggling his finger towards the pest. It produces a buzzing noise in response.
Nanami returns to his desk, allowing Ren a moment with his new âfriendâ. He remembers their conversation before their mission. Ren planned on telling his sister about Jujutsu Sorcery. Heâs curious if it happened and how it went.
âHow was your weekend?â Nanami asks.
Ren closes the drawer and sits at this usual spot. âWell, I told my sister. About everything.â
âAnd how did that go?â
âIt went well. I said what I needed to say. It felt good to tell her the truth.â
Ren smiles before continuing. âYou were right, I should have given her more credit. She freaked out way less than I thought she would. Her facial expressions were hilarious though. But other than that, she didnât really ask me any questions. She just listened. We spent the weekend like we usually do. It felt normal.â
Nanami recalls the note from last week: Canât wait to spend this weekend watching movies and baking cookies with you! He wishes he could have tasted those cookies.
âGlad it went well. Itâs always nice to be honest,â Nanami says. He thinks about all the tiny notes in his briefcase. He feels a tad bit guilty, harboring this little secret of his, but not enough to reveal his own truth.
They start their lesson on cursed tools and weapons. Once itâs lunch, Nanami brews his tea and buys a Pocari Sweat from the vending machine, the usual cycle. Like clockwork, Hello Kitty is waiting for him on his desk as Ren prepares to bite intoâŚ
Wait.
Is it really?
Nanami speed walks to his spot, tearing off the cover to the bento. Inside is a ham and cheese sandwich. Itâs slightly smushed, but once he picks it up with his hands, itâs beautiful.
Already knowing the answer, Nanami asks, âWhat is this?â
Ren finishes chewing and replies, âHam and cheese sandwich! Itâs on some type of French bread. Sheâs always talking about the bread.â Ren shrugs. âShe loves bread.â
Nanami gulps.
He loves bread.
She loves bread.
And she makes ham and cheese sandwiches.
There is hunger and butterflies fluttering in his stomach.
Before he can say or do anything embarrassing, he bites into it. This time, his eyes actually do roll to the back of his head. Itâs amazing. The bread has the perfect texture: Chewy crust on the outside, soft crumb on the inside. There is a perfect proportion of ingredients, Nanami notices, as he inspects it thoroughly after his first taste. Creamy mayo and Dijon mustard skillfully spread on each slice. Fresh lettuce and tomatoes sliced thin. Generous layers of ham and cheese, which Nanami can tell are from a high-quality deli.
It's as good as the one he used to get from the bakery.
No. Itâs better.
Nanami doesnât speak, savoring each bite of this divine creation. Heâs brought back to reality when he hears Renâs voice. âIt looks like youâre really enjoying it!â
He swallows before admitting, âI am enjoying this. Iâm quite fond of ham and cheese sandwiches.â Thatâs an understatement, but heâs trying to remain calm in front of his student.
âMy sister woke up early this morning to pick up all the ingredients. She went to the bakery, a deli, and this little farmerâs market nearby. How she managed to stuff this big sandwich in the bento, Iâll never understand. Sheâs some kind of cooking wizard or something.â
As Ren talks, Nanami continues to happily munch on his food. He agrees with Ren; she is a wizard for conjuring magic like this.
âOh! Forgot to share todayâs wisdom. âTo my little superhero, letâs kick some Jujutsu ass today!ââ Ren beams as he gazes at the note. âShe really is the best.â
Nanami is too excited about the meal that he forgot about the note. He retrieves the cover and turns it over to inspect. When he reads it, his eyes widen with shock.
Nanami,
Thanks for looking after Ren these past few weeks. I hope youâve been enjoying my bentos. Â
P.S. Sorry about Hello Kitty ;)
~~~
That morning
After assembling what might be the best sandwich youâve ever assembled, you take a few seconds to admire your work. Ren comes into the kitchen and stands next to you. âDid you really make that? Thatâs not from a sandwich shop?â
You flash a bright smile at him and brag, âIt was all me! I made it! I bought all the ingredients this morning. I wanted this weekâs lunch to be a little different.â
He puts an arm around your shoulders. âYouâre the best, sis.â
You rest your head on him. âThanks for being honest with me, booger.â
âWell, since weâre being honest, thereâs one more thing I have to tell you.â
You groan. âOh no, I donât know how much more of this I can handle right now!â
âItâs not anything serious, I promise!â He points at the bentos. âIâve actually been giving a bento to my mentor, Nanami. He never has any lunch with him, so I felt bad and wanted to share. And I think he likes me better because of it!â
Youâre surprised at this news. Nanami, Renâs mentor slash the handsome ex-stockbroker, has been eating your food this whole time? Not only that, but heâs probably witnessed some of the embarrassing messages youâve written.
âWait, do you give him the blue bento box?â
Ren grins. âNo, he eats in the Hello Kitty one, hehe.â
You slap your palm to your forehead. âSo Iâve been serving this man food in a Hello Kitty bento box the entire time?!â
âYup!â Ren replies, giddy.
If you knew this guy was eating your cooking, you would have prepared a more elevated dish, not egg salad sandwiches or meatballs. You look at the sandwiches that you were proud of moments ago and frown.
Ren, sensing your internal crisis, reassures you, âHe really likes it. He even said your egg salad sandwich was tasty. And trust me, that is not a common word in that guyâs vocabulary.â He attempts to place the covers on, pressing down to smush the sandwich in.
âWait! Let me do my notes.â
Ren steps aside. âOh yeah! Canât forget that. Itâs my favorite part.â He gives you a big smile. Your brother really is a sweetheart.
It doesnât take you long to complete Renâs. However, it does take time to think about the other. The one that Nanami probably reads. Should you pretend that itâs still for your brother? Or say something generic? Maybe a silly joke?
You contemplate for a minute before you decide what you want to write.
~~~
Nanami re-reads it again and again, not knowing how to react. There are several things that stick out to him. First, the use of his name. She knows his name. How? They havenât been formally introduced to each other yet.
Second, sheâs giving him thanks. Thanks for what? Heâs just doing his job. He doesnât need to be thanked. Does it make him feel good? Sure. Does he like it? Yeah. Does it give him butterflies seeing it in writing like this? Absolutely.
Third, sheâs aware about him eating her food. Worst of all, she knows that he eats from the Hello Kitty bento box. He should have never trusted that damn feline.
Last, and certainly not least, that winky face. AÂ winky face?! A. Winky. Face.
Is she flirting with him?
He buries his head in his hands. Why is he thinking about this? Why is he flustered? Riled up over nothing? She doesnât even know that he exists.
No. She does know he exists.
All those times, pretending that those kind words were for him. This time, it actually is. He canât let this opportunity go to waste.
Nanami glances over at Ren, who is distracted by his phone. Now is his chance.
He gets a small piece of paper and quickly scribbles a message. He sticks it into the empty bento and closes it with the cover, observing it for another good minute before plotting his next move. As nonchalantly as he could, he walks over to Ren and hands it to him, thanking him for another great lunch.Â
He watches carefully as Hello Kitty disappears into the backpack, praying to the Sanrio gods that she fulfills this mission for him.
~~~
That night after dinner, Ren studies at the table as you get prepare to wash the dishes. âHey Ren, can you hand me the bentos?â
âSure.â He sets them on the counter beside you, then goes back to his seat.
Opening his first, you place it in the sink with the rest of the dirty plates. You start to do the same with the Hello Kitty container, but something catches your eye; a piece of paper with words written on it.
You almost call Ren to question him about it, but you stop as soon as you realize that your name is written at the top in unfamiliar handwriting. The rest of it reads:
Iâve licked every single one of your bentos clean. Thereâs no doubt that Iâve enjoyed your meals.
P.S. Hello Kitty has grown on me, so I donât mind :)
You clutch the note against your chest, checking to make sure Ren is still distracted by his book, which he is. You study it again slowly, word for word, the gears in your brain spinning faster and faster. After processing whatâs written, blood rushes into your cheeks, feeling flustered.
Especially at the word âlickedâ.
He licked them clean. Licked.
Every. Single. One.
Oh my.
You canât help but picture it. Kento Nanami, handsome ex-stockbroker from whatever that companyâs name is, licking every corner of that Hello Kitty bento box, licking his fingers clean, licking your â
âHey sis, Iâm going to my room!â Renâs announcement startles you out of whatever ridiculous scenario you are imagining.
âOkay!â you respond, without turning around to face him. You canât bear to even look at him right now. You listen as his footsteps fade into the background, then a door shuts in the distance. Sighing in relief, you glance at the note again, smiling. For someone who seems so serious, he sure is cheesy drawing a smiley at the end. You secure it in your pocket, shaking your head to remove any impure thoughts from your dirty mind.
Why are you getting so flustered by this? It means nothing. Heâs responding to you to be polite, thatâs all. There is no hidden meaning behind it. Stop letting whatever girlish fantasies you have run wild. You are better than this.
As you lie in bed that night, Nanamiâs picture on your phone in one hand, his message in the other, you realize that maybe youâre not better than this after all.
~~~
Nanami went the rest of the day not thinking about the note.
They finished another successful lesson, said their goodbyes, and Nanami went home. The usual. He cooked himself a nice plate of carbonara with a side of garlic bread, all paired with glass of white wine, of course. He skimmed the paper while he digested his dinner. He showered, changed into a robe, watched the nightly news. Flossed, brushed, and changed into his pajamas. Same routine.Â
The only difference is that now, heâs lying in bed unable to sleep because thatâs the only thing he can focus on. Itâs not even her note heâs freaking out about. Itâs his. The one he sent to her in a red Hello Kitty bento box. Where he wrote âlickedâ on it. And drew a smiley. He covers his face with his palms and groans aloud. His embarrassment is catching up to him ten hours later, ten hours too late. If he knew how ridiculous he sounded, he would have never written it.Â
He didnât mean for it to sound soâŚsuggestive. He was simply being honest. He actually does lick those bentos clean. He does it after each meal to collect every last morsel from that container. He has no shame in that. But he didnât have to admit it to her, especially not to the woman who is giving him these feasts. She must think Iâm some kind of pervert, he thinks. His cheeks feel hot as he grumbles again.
Heâs reminded of the picture Ren showed him last week. Her holding those giant meatballs. That warm, inviting smile on her face. Those cute sushi pajamas. Sheâs probably a nice person. A good person. He hears it from Ren so often that he starts to believe it himself. He refuses to see her as anything other than wholesome and good.
What was her reaction to it? He imagines her finding it and smiling. Maybe she re-reads it a couple of times and giggles. She probably has a nice laugh. Someone with that smile must have a beautiful laugh.
Youâre better than this, he tells himself. He shouldnât let his imagination run wild. He is a grown man thinking about a woman in sushi pajamas. She is a normal woman who cooks amazing meals and has a gorgeous smile. Itâs no big deal.
Yet here he is, in bed, getting excited. His entire body is heating up, he has to strip the blanket off to cool down.
Maybe he isnât better than this.
~~~
Wednesday morning, after having two nights to think about it, you decide how you want to respond to Nanami.
You scribble your message, add a few hearts in there for good measure, and sign your name.
Itâs all innocent fun. Youâll probably never meet each other in real life. Whatâs the harm in playing around?
~~~
Wednesday afternoon, Nanami sits at his desk, blushing profusely. He pays no attention to the delectable sandwich in front of him. His sole focus is on the note he is currently gawking at:
Nanami,
You had me flustered. I hope you enjoy todayâs ham and cheese sandwich. I put extra love in there, just for you.
Three hearts drawn in a row. Then her name signed at the end.
As Ren inhales his lunch in the background, Nanami hunches over his desk, re-reading the words carefully. He even removes his glasses to get a closer look.
So, she doesnât think Iâm some sort of bento box licking pervert, he thinks. Good. Thatâs good.
She got flustered at his message. Flustered. And she put extra love in the sandwich, just for him. She was thinking of him when she made this sandwich. She thinks about him. This is for him. The note, the sandwich, her love.
Nanami blushes. This is getting ridiculous.
Kento Nanami does not blush. He does not exchange flirtatious comments with strangers, let alone his studentâs older sister. He does not get butterflies in his stomach. He does not fall in love. This is all just a momentary lapse of judgment.
Kento Nanami is a grade 1 Jujutsu Sorcerer. Kento Nanami is a professional. Kento Nanami is a serious adult.
Kento Nanami is alone. Thatâs the way it is.Â
Renâs summer lessons are almost over. And by the time he becomes a Jujutsu High student, heâll move into the dorms on campus. There will be no reason to ever meet his sister in person. Heâs sure of it.
What harm can a little playful flirtation be? This is a silly exchange theyâre doing. Two adults having innocent fun. Thereâs nothing wrong with it. Heâs allowed a moment of fun once in a while in this mundane life of his. Right?
He jots something down on a piece of paper and places it in the box. Itâs certainly less embarrassing than the previous, he made sure of that.Â
He sighs as he finally picks up his sandwich to eat. From his peripheral, he notices Ren looking at him, concerned.
~~~
You didnât expect him to respond back. You were thinking it was going to be a one-and-done type of deal. You didnât know this man, but you assumed that he is the type to not entertain this frivolous idea.
But here you are, standing in front of your kitchen sink, reading his latest reply:Â
It was delicious, as usual. I wish you could make this for me every day.
No smiley faces this time, straight forward and to the point. For some odd reason, this tamer response still has you just as flustered as the infamous lick memo.Â
After you wash and hand dry the containers, you retrieve a small sticky note to write your reply, tucking it in the box for Friday.
