I'm always happy to recommend my favourite books 🥰 but this is also such a difficult question as well as I'd recommend all of them if I could! However I've limited myself down to 10 books, as thats how many photos tumblr let's me upload.
This book is always my go to recommend for those who want to learn more about Mike Hawthorn & Peter Collins. It's really easy to read because it was written like a story rather than non fiction, and it really drags you in to Mike's life and all the struggles he faced. Though written as fiction it is mostly all accurate and a bonus is the book is pretty cheap to get. Also if you read this book you are guaranteed to ship Mike and Peter together by the end of it.
I always love reading about the drivers who are not as well remembered, and this book was a delight to read because there was just so much info about Piers! There's so much in here thats not available online and as you read you feel you really get to know Pier, and he was just such a lovely person. He was so close to so many of the well known drivers and people and its such a shame there isn't as much about him out there online, but having this book is an amazing tribute.
This has always been my go to book to recommend for those getting into classic f1, or just want to learn generalised info across each era. This book goes into detail about the championship battles of each year from the 50s up to the 90s. Its a great read to learn about each year, the important drivers, the winners and the losers and important things that happened each year.
I was so lucky to come across this book in an antique shop. Another book that pays tribute to two amazing drivers, but its also such a hard read knowing how both their lives end. You really get to know both of them well, it goes into their personal lives a lot and it was really nice learning about these two, especially Gunnar who is so frequently forgotten.
You wouldn't think it, but this book has so many funny stories about the drivers! It's super interesting learning about f1 from a medics stand point, and really awakens you to just how dangerous it is and how easily injuries occur - and how flippant drivers could be about it. But its also amazing reading about all the improvements that have been brought in to improve safety.
Those who've known me a long time will know this is where it all started for me. For the first year or two all I ever posted on this account was Niki Lauda photos. My biggest book collection is still Niki Lauda, I have so so many I could recommend - but this one has always been my favourite. I think the way he writes is so compelling, his unwavering confidence really spoke to me and it really made me attached to him when reading this. Its a great insight into his life, the dangers of F1, and what it was like racing in the 70s, 80s and life after.
You do not know James Hunt, until you have read this book. Once you've read this book you can't look at Rush the same way because it really ruins who James really was. It's easy to look at the addictions and the womanizing and see it at surface level, not knowing what was hidden underneath. This book does such a good job at showing who the real James was, who struggled with so much. Its really a moving read but 100% worth it to learn about him.
A book most people don't even know exist. Its an amazing insight into what it was like being a wag back in the 60s, 70s. Its an aspect of F1 most people wouldn't even think about. But not only that Bette did so much charity work helping those who lost their loved ones in racing and she goes into that in the book. And of course you learn a lot more about the personal life of the ever funny Graham Hill, though the last chapter is very heart breaking. Definitely worth a read.
Another amazing read to learn about drivers who sadly passed. You have to ready the tissues as its so hard to read about their deaths, especially Rogers which goes into a lot of details. But there is so much info about their lives, how they got into F1 and its so endearing to read about their passion for the sport.
Now I know you've read this one Daisy 🤭 but I'm recommending this for anyone else reading. This was the first book that got me interested in classic f1 outside of Niki Lauda - it was also where I first learnt about Mike Hawthorn. But the story is about Phil Hill & Wolfgang von Trips and it is really moving learning about their lives, how they both come into F1, their relationship together and racing for Ferrari until the end. It's a really easy to read book, good if you are getting into non fiction writing, and the level of detail is amazing.
