"Iâm neither a human, nor a man."
Ruby fiddled with her locket, hands shaking slightly. The sun was already set, and the moon was creeping higher and higher in the sky, signalling the highest peak of the full moon, one of the most dangerous times of the month for any werewolf, but it didnât matter to her anymore.
She began to miss the warmth of her room, granny sat at the door with her bow and arrow ready for any hunters that may arrive. Pulling at her red shall, she tightened It around her neck. It was useless here but it kept her warm.
She brought her hand down to reach for the canteen, taking a quick swig before tightening to lid and tying it to her belt. Bending her knees, she pushed herself up. Ruby brought her hand back up to the locket, clasping it in between her palms. It was the oldest thing she had, yet it had no significance. It was just a small red wolfed locket, containing nothing.
Proceeding forward, she listened to her surroundings. There where people everywhere but she just ignored them. Taking the quite path towards her hideout.
It was a small confined space, not much, but she called it her home here. Based under a tree, she only had to move away the pieces of bark to duck under.
She was close, she could sense it. Marking territory didnât do much, but at least she knew where she was going.
Stopping in her tracks, a trailed breath emerged from her mouth. A smile tugging at the corner of her lips as she stared at the large evergreen tree she called home. She proceeded forward, looking around before crawling in and sitting with her knees close to her chest. Bringing her bag to her front she took out the pencil and paper she had managed to get from the Indian camp. They where all really nice there, told her what was good food and which was bad. A temporary cure for any diseases you may catch on the island.
Any necessities sheâd ever need, she traveled to them.
The younger girls payed particular interest in her, braiding small parts of her hair, dancing with her, teaching her how to repair her shawl. She loved them. The sweet sound of the music they played at dinner, it made her smile whenever she could hear it. Even now she could still hear them all laughing, talking, pitter patter of their feet bouncing off the ground as the drum beats. It was one of the best parts of the day, the other being with Jefferson of course.
He was lovely himself, his smile lighting up the area, his disbelief that he is the most perfect man in the world. No matter what mood she was in, she could never not admit her love for him. His brilliantly blue eyes, perfectly red lips, the ones she could call hers. She couldnât wish for anything better. However, she was agitated. No one could be this happy for so long, granted it had been a few weeks now. All good things must come to an end.
She brought the pencil to the paper, scribbling down a few things before beginning a small sketch. She had sat there for hours on end drawing anything she felt like. She began to draw a white wolf, similar to the one she had seen only days before. The small strokes of her pencil, breaking the silence in the room as she began to finish, âperfectâ she mumbled, placing it next to her in the pile of drawings before hand.
She leant her head back onto the bark behind her.
Peace and quite.
Quite footsteps pulled her out of her trance. Someone had followed her. Their hands running around the tree she sat in. A low grumble forming in her throat as she wolfed up. Crawling towards the entrance, she stuck her nose out. Sniffing around for the intruder. It was an extremely familiar scent, but she couldnât quite put her finger on it.
The footsteps stopped, allowing Ruby to walk out into the open, searching around. No one was there. Not a single soul. She didnât understand. Was she finally going mad? She shook her head, wafting off the water droplets that had fallen on to her coat from the rain outside, crawling back into her tree.
There it was again. The drumming noise from the near by camp had changed. Turned into a more angry beat. It scared her.
Everything turned icy cold. Was this a dream? Her breathing deepened, she could see it in the air. Swirling around in front of her. She turned her head to the left, watching the ice travel up the small wall. She stepped back, the ice following her. She had to get out. Her instincts telling her to run. As far as she could. She bolted out the door. She ran as fast as her little legs could carry her. Until her lungs where burning and her legs where aching. She stopped, heavy breathing, in desperate need for some water. She walked forward, morphing into a human as she did so.
Suddenly, hands fell upon her waistline, in shock she turned around, her hand ready to knock the person out but the gentle touch was enough to make her realise âJefferson?â She had looked upon his face. Wounds covering him and blood smeared up over his body âJefferson, w-what has happened to youâ Her hands fell upon his face but he flinched away. His eyes fell upon a body, a body lifelessly on the ground. Blonde hair fell down her face and there Ruby choked âGr-Grace..â
Her breathing stopped, her eyes darting from the young girl and Jeffersons face. âWh-what did you do?â The tears began to fill her eyes, spilling over her water line and leaving a mark down her face. âJefferson what did you do!â Her voice was more stern, she moved his hands away from her body and walked over to the girl, examining the gashes. âH-how could youâ she sniffled, checking the girls pulse, she wasnât gone just yet. Ruby scooped up the girls body into her arms and cradled her. Hushing the girl, humming to her. It wasnât just a way to send Grace on her way, it was comfort to Ruby. Every man she had, had always been a monster, she was just too dumb to see it this time. âJust close your eyes, the sun is going down, youâll be alright,no one can hurt you now, come morning light, you and Iâll be safe and soundâ the girl struggled to breath, choking on what smelt like blood. She felt horrible. There wasnât anything she could do but hold her while she died in pain in her arms.
Her lip trembled as the girl took in her last breath. âGrace-â she choked. âGrace donât leave me, grace come backâ Ruby checked her pulse again. She was gone and there was nothing she could do. âNo!â She sniffled, crying into the girls shoulder. âNot again, not again, not againâ she repeated, over and over. Forgetting her murderer was stood right there.
âYou!â She shouted, gently placing the body aside before standing up. âYou monster. How could you. How could you do that to her! Your own daughter. She died in my arms Jefferson!â She growled, punching his chest as hard as she could.
He only stood there, his eyes red and puffy. She wanted to hug him, but she just couldnât, that was not acceptable. âI thought you where the only one I wouldnât have to be scared aboutâ she choked on her tears, falling to the floor. âHow could youâ she sobbed, her head in her hands.
He was still stood there, he didnât move. She cried for a while, until he moved, crouching down near her and wrapping his arms around her, kissing her forehead. âIt was for youâ he whispered.
âWhat?â Ruby asked, her voice croaky. âYou wouldnât do that. This isnât you-â she pushed him away as hard as she could, launching forward, pinning his shoulders down, morphing into her wolf in the process. âWho are you!â She spat in his face.
âRuby! Ruby get off itâs me! Itâs Jefferson!â He struggled under her clasp.
âNo itâs not!â She screamed back in his face. âThe Jefferson I knew wouldnât kill his daughter, wouldnât stand there and watch me cry, heâd never even dream of hurting his daughter and heâd envelope me in his arms so tight Iâd struggle to breathâ
âWhy would I want to kill someone I love?â A look of despair swept across his face.
âYou wouldnât. Thatâs why I want to know why you killed your own daughterâ she barked.
âBecause I donât love her anymoreâ
âWhat?â
âBecause there is only one love in my life.â He said again, a blank expression on his face. âAnd thatâs not even youâ he grinned, grabbing hold of her front leg and snapping it.
Ruby yelped, her eyes seeing red for a split second.
âI got this from an old friend. This is why you fell in love with me like you didâ he brought his hand up to reveal Rubyâs heart in his hand. âMiss it?â
âGive it back!â She growled.
âNoâ he laughed, watching as Ruby struggled to stand.
âYou shouldnât take what isnât yours. Now give it backâ she growled, limping towards him.
âWell I donât want to. Donât you remember the saying? finders keepers, losers weepers?â he grinned.
âHow childishâ Ruby tensed.
âYou wonât hurt me. You canât. You love me too much.â
Ruby stepped back, standing down. âI wouldnât under estimate me, if I where youâ she choked a little.
âOh I think I would-â he began to squeeze her heart again.
âNo!â She whimpered, falling to the floor and clenching her fists to her chest, her eyes weakly opening to look at him as he crouched over her, his face flashing from him to Sam.
âAw,âhe pouted sarcastically. âLook what happened to the big bad wolf againâ he grinned, crushing her heart even more.
âI⊠DonâtâŠ.careâ she struggled to breathe, talking not doing so good either.
âSo you wonât mind if I do this?â He grinned again, crushing it into a thousand prices. âOh Ruby, you are never getting rid of me-â
Those where the last words she heard. Her body bolting up right as her eyes widened with fear, standing up and running as fast as she could away from her sleeping sight, the tears streaming down her face as she forced her legs to move faster.
She began to tremble again, running straight into someone, knocking then off their feet; tumbling into a tree. Ruby scrambled to her feet, morphing back into her wolf as she growled at the person grumbling at the tree. Vicious barks sending saliva all over the place.
