daena velaryon is my number 1 girlflop!

she is a jacaerys twin (tbh i forget that she is sometimes…Flopcerys), but was passed over as heir to driftmark in favour of her younger brother, lucerys, and after the dance of the dragons, she basically becomes a guardian of the targaryen dynasty. nursery nurse daena.

she was said to have had a close relationship with her aunt, helaena, and with her cousin, baela. she’s basically the community strap!

she’s captured with viserys ii, but returns to kingslanding to her much beloved younger siblings, aegon and visenya, a few years into his reign. from there, she becomes a prominent figure at court, and weds lord dalton greyjoy, but they basically live apart because daena is a big fat lesbian and finds him annoying to look at. he eventually just gets murdered by one of his salt wives. daena karma.

she spends a lot of her later life cleaning up after her sister’s messes, caring for her billions of nieces and nephews as she has no children of her own, and offering unsolicited advice to her king brother— which to his credit, he usually takes.

she worked closely with viserys during daeron and baelor’s respective reigns. viserys actually names her his hand for his short reign, and between the two of them, they introduced more progressive reforms!!!!!

⋆. how does daena react to emotional manipulation?

daena, at all stages of her life, is incredibly guarded, so even when she is younger, and more naive, she has little trust in anyone, even if they are older, and offering comfort, or parental affection. she keeps anyone who isn't her family at arms-length, and even then, she still distances herself from her mother, and her twin brother. not to say she is entirely unsusceptible- as a teenager, she is full of self-loathing, so she laps up attention of any kind. as an adult, however, she'll spot that from a mile away, and be insulted you thought her stupid enough to try.

if it were to come from her nieces and nephews, however...they know how to manipulate her ass! she loves children, and it doesn't take much persuading for her to buy them new dresses, or toys, or books, especially if they shed a few tears to convince her.

⋆. what is daena's most treasured family tradition?

the way daena's family looks changes so much throughout her life, so her family traditions change with each version of it.

when she was a young child, her father, laenor, was deeply attentive when he was not making merry with his...extremely close male friends. he was endeavour to read her and her twin brother stories each night, and jacaerys always let her choose. she'd pester him for tales about his time in the stepstones, and the heroics of prince daemon- as well as details of maegor's reign, and jaehaerys’ after him.

when daemon married her mother, and they lived on dragonstone, for rhaenyra's nameday, daena and her brood of siblings would clamber into their bed in the morning (daemon was not a happy camper), and shower her with the presents they'd made and organised for. they would break their fast in her chambers, as a family, and would clamber down onto the beach, and play in the water.

in her brother's court, daena played a large part in raising her nieces and nephews, and essentially became a beloved matriarch of the dynasty, even if she had no children of her own. when she was eventually ushered away from court, and given blackpearl as compensation, she lives alone- but received many visits from her favoured pseudo-children. elaena and her children, naerys (until her death), and daeron ii and his wife, all endeavoured to keep their beloved aunt company. she can never escape these damn kids, even as they've grown up-- and she doesn't want to! these are her babies, and she shares meals with them as often as she can, gifting all of the little ones necklaces, or swords she has made for them.

⋆. what is a cherished memory daena holds close?

i think holding her sister's children for the first time is a big one, especially daena the younger. they are proof that the terrible times are behind them, and even after so much death, there is still such light that can be made and brought forth. they are her hope, a motivation for daena to continue to work towards a better future. she's a big fat sap, basically.

i also think daena really does cherish her childhood friendship with her aunt, helaena. it was simpler times, digging around in the dirt for whatever bug helaena desired for her collection, since helaena had been forbidden by her mother to dirty herself in the gardens. she was essentially daena's first love, and she will always be remembered fondly, even if their friendship ended abruptly.

⋆. how does daena demonstrate her ambition?

daena carves a place for herself in the court of her brother, aegon ii, her nephew, baelor i, and eventually, her youngest brother, viserys. upon her return from essos, after leaving lys-- she locks in and runs her little brother's council of regents like the navy, and places herself in opposition to lord unwin peake, casting herself as the more reasonable voice of counsel. she's unafraid of speaking her thoughts, and the truth itself, and soon, it is her wisdom that quiets the council. even if she's a woman. her position, however, is very much ensured through aegon ii's unwavering trust and admiration for her. she does what she needs to, even if upsets him, however. she's honestly kind of unabashed about ruling through her brother, and taking on the bulk of his responsibilities, but as he learns, and grows, daena also recognises she has to work with him, and her little brother viserys, when he eventually returns from lys. she maintains this influence, even becoming hand of the king during viserys i's reign, the first woman to ever officially occupy the position.

⋆. is daena an optimist , realist, or pessimist?

when she was younger, she leaned towards pessimistic. trust, she was annoying as hell to be around...oh daena downer. but as she matured, she was almost forced into realism, especially as she becomes involved with the affairs of the realm. her mind is that of an advisor- mostly unbiased, and with the interests of the people, and what can be achieved logistically, at the forefont.

⋆. does daena value her legacy? what has she done to ensure it?

again, as a young woman, legacy was always on her mind. she wants to be remembered as sage, and wise, and...for lack of a better word, strong. she is still technically legitmate through law, but she's not an idiot. she resembles her true father. daena wishes to leave behind something that outlives her bastardry, the inherent wrongness she's carried with her everyday. she ensures it through her involvement in politics, and the reigns of her family- and through the closely monitored education of her nieces and nephews. if nothing else, they can remember her teachings, and pass them along to their children, and their children's children. as she settles into the twilight of her life, however, i think she's just content to be around those she loves. what is legacy compared to the company of your family?
