Yet another guerrilla attack that seemed to go according to the plan.
After Keith and Shiro were dropped on the enslaved planet by Pidge's camouflaged lion, they nimbly infiltrated the Galra outpost. They had done it several times before, and the script was the very same again: reach the control room, kill the operators there and shut down the communication channels between the local outposts and between the main fleet and the planet. After that, find the generals, take them out, then report back to the castle, form Voltron and erase everything Galran down to the last bit.
Keith stepped to the hologram panels as Shiro finished off the last technician behind him. The red paladin looked up to the huge, now partly understood screen (as they had both learnt to read their symbols) and furrowed his eyebrows. It was still difficult to understand everything that was written there, but he was looking for specific data, making the task a bit easier.
Locations, ranks, names. Once he memorized all of them, he nodded to the black paladin and he ran a simple command on the console. When it required authentication, he lifted one of the dead soldier's arm and used his fingerprint. After a brief pause, the system accepted the request, and started listing out all the transmission ports that were being closed.
The boy turned away and joined Shiro, who had been standing guard in the door. There were four officers in this establishment they had to take out, preferably in an hour or less; their presence could not have gone unrecognized longer than that, when the whole camp’s information stream was paralyzed.
Keith followed the other's lead, as he always did: Shiro could memorize a building's map at a single glance, allowing them to move around on the least used corridors. This was how they got in as well. They headed to the lowest ranking officer's room first to minimize the chance of an untimely raised alarm. Without these four generals, the local army would inevitably fall into chaos and that was what they needed: time until they got back to the castle, jumped into their lions and launched the second offence.
Once they reached the door, they leaned against the wall on the two opposite sides. Two people were talking in there, most likely the officer and a guest. All officers had two bodyguards at least, and the guest might have had someone with him too... It added up to five enemies. Underestimating their numbers would have turned out disastrous, so they had always prepared for more.
Taking a deep breath, Keith cocked his head back, closed his eyes and readied his bayard. He could not believe himself, but of all the things, he was thinking of Lance peaceful sleeping face. He had spent five nights in his room, and Keith never forgot to take a look at him before he left in the morning. This morning was not different either, except that instead of going to the training room, Keith was suddenly dispatched on a mission.
His hands started shaking at the imminent fight, but before the usual fear could have crippled his limbs, he hit the door's button and with a raised sword, he hurled himself into the room.
However, after his first two steps, he stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes widened at the sight that greeted him, and in panic, he groped for his shield.
A lonely computer beeped in the distance.
ACCESS DENIED DEAD OPERATOR DETECTED
Keith had no time to raise his arm: as soon as he stepped in, he was shot in the stomach, sending him flying across the corridor.
