For anyone that might be curious, the second time I played through Fenâs story, I stopped to make notes and consult maps so I could figure out just how long it took her to save the world.
Have a spreadsheet! (spoilers for the events of the game, obviously)
I strongly disagree with the vanilla game only taking two years, which anyone that follows me on twitter can attest to. Okay, maybe, if you stuck to just the main story missions and whatever you needed to do to scrape by with enough Power. But Thedas is a big place, and given that one of the published fucking novels states that Montsimmard is somehow on the way to the Western Approach when the characters departed from Val Royeaux, and Haven apparently moved a good 150 miles north between DA:O and DA:I, I hope youâll forgive me if I adjust their timelines to accommodate more realistic movement across the fucking map.
I used the Dragon Age RPG maps for rough distances. While they too give conflicting distances, I went with the most recently published book. valerie1972â˛s posts on travel times were invaluable, though my calculations were considerably rougher than theirs.
Iâm basing this on the characters travelling forward roughly 20-25 miles a day, varying depending on if theyâre on a road or going cross-country and what the terrain is like. I could have increased the distance they travel each day, given that they have mounts, but they still wouldnât be taking the animals into dangerous areas, and as I canât imagine all the companions are accomplished riders they would still be going fairly slowly. Also, I never used the damn things; banter was rare enough to begin with.
Days where theyâre fighting, well, we can throw our Inquisitors at groups of enemies one after the other, but just ask Blackwall if heâd like to fight in a grand melee now, every day for weeks on end. Theyâre resting after fights, taking care of injuries, and not pushing too hard, because if something goes wrong, theyâre a long way from any help.
Distances between camps I also took into account - those camps we set up with the Requisitions and Potions tables? No, weâre not doing one of those every night. Thatâs ridiculous. Fen doesnât have an entourage of soldiers following her around with furniture just in case she wants to take a nap. Those are base camps and travel points, where Inquisition soldiers can keep an area secure after the Inquisitor has cleared it out and provide aid to residents or refugees, and theyâre each a few days apart. Between camps, Fen and her friends are on their own.
Iâd like to make further adjustments - the entire timeline post-Arbor Wilds is screwed up (the inquisitor goes through the mirror back to Skyhold, and presumably has to wait for the advisers to take the long way back, given that Leliana is present when Kieran disappears into the mirror, and then the Inq has to travel to the Shrine of Mythal to tame a dragon (which is outside fucking Montsimmard again), THEN return back to Skyhold, THEN fight Corypheus, who conveniently decided to wait a few weeks before throwing his big tantrum and reopening the Breach. Ridiculous.), and things like visiting the desert in summer and travelling through the Frostbacks in winter are really inadvisable -but this is as well as I can make it work without tweaking large portions of the story. Not that it doesnât need it, but thatâs better left to fic.

*Â Â My current headcanon is that she knew very well that having magic would get her sent away, and so hid it for ~18 months before her sister discovered her using it. The younger Trevelyan, then six years old, reported it to her parents as all good citizens are supposed to, but without fully realising the consequences or that she'd never see her big sister again. She has Issues about the subject (GUILT) and doesn't like to talk about it.
â Â Using the events of the non-game materials for this; I figure even if Alistair and the others don't find him in my worlds, his death will probably canonically be caused by something around this time. I'm betting that by DA:I the old Arishok will also have died of something other than Hawke if he was allowed to leave Kirkwall alive in DA2.
I'm guessing that Inquisition begins some time between 9:41 and 9:43, but no exact information on this has been released yet. I'm gonna go with the middle ground of 9:42 and work from there. The timeline includes some spoilers from the novels and comics. Based on what I do know and my current headcanon:
9:06: The oldest Hawke sibling is born.
9:09: Skitch Brosca is born in Orzammar. Cadash is born to a Surfacer family in Tantervale.
9:11: Avia Cousland is born at Highever. Iyana Tabris is born in the Denerim Alienage.
9:12: Bethany and Carver Hawke are born. The Keeper of the Sabrae clan is murdered and Darathen Mahariel* is born.
9:13: Cait Amell is born in Harper's Ford.
9:14: Trevelyan (Warrior) is born in Ostwick.
9:16: A child is born to the Dalish clan Lavellan in the Free Marches who will later become the Archer.
9:17: Cait Amell is sent to the Ferelden Circle. The First of the Dalish Clan Lavellan is born in the Free Marches.
9:18: Trevelyan (Mage) is born in Ostwick.
9:20: The Hawke family settles in Lothering.
9:21: Meredith Stannard becomes Knight-Commander in Kirkwall.
9:25: Cailan Theirin becomes King of Ferelden and marries Anora Mac Tir. Trevelyan (Mage) is sent to Ostwick Circleâ .
9:27: Malcolm Hawke dies.
9:30: The Fifth Blight begins and Duncan recruits the Warden. King Cailan dies. Lothering is destroyed shortly afterwards. One of the younger Hawke siblings is killed by an ogre, and the rest of the family flee to Kirkwall.
9:31: The Grey Wardens slay the Archdemon in Denerim. Cait Amell dies. Darathen Mahariel disappears and is believed dead. Skitch Brosca becomes Teyrna of Gwaren. Six months later, the Warden-Commander arrives at Amaranthine. The two Hawke siblings fund a trip into the Deep Roads.
9:32: Morrigan enters the Eluvian in the Dragonbone Wastes. Warden-Commander Iyana Tabris disappears.
9:34: The Arishok attacks Kirkwall and is defeated by Hawke. Justinia V becomes Divine.
9:37: Anders destroys the Kirkwall Chantry and the Kirkwall rebellion begins. Fiona is elected as Grand Enchanter. Morrigan becomes Arcane Advisor to Empress Celene. Leo Hawke becomes Viscount of Kirkwall (exact date unknown).
9:38: The Chantry dissolves the College of Enchanters. Maric Theirin diesâĄ.
9:40: Varric Tethras is questioned by Cassandra Pentaghast in Kirkwall. It is discovered that Hawke, Skitch Brosca and Avia Cousland have disappeared. The Orlesian Civil War begins. The Neverran Accord is broken, severing the Templar Order and Seekers of Truth from Chantry control. The Eluvian network is reactivated.
9:42: A clutch of live griffons is discovered in the Anderfels.
Warden ages at the beginning of DA:O:Â Brosca - 21; Tabris - 19; Cousland - 19; Mahariel 18; Amell - 17.
