Lucas is their childhood friend. Rowan's assistant that taught them how to catch pokémon and how pokémarts looked like. The friend that was there when Saturn exploded the lake, and the friend that was there when they climbed Mt. Coronet to face Cyrus.

A precious friend whom they failed astronomically.

Because they didn't realize there was something wrong with him. They failed to see the danger preying on him after they were back from Mt. Coronet, that has been there for the entire last half of their journey and for the year after that.

A friend they abandoned for four years and that was irremediably changed when they came back. A friend whose soul and fate were no longer mutable, a friend in pain.

But it's okay because no matter how much Lucas has changed, Hikari loves him and will love him forever. What darkrai can never change is his gentle soul, and the memories and feelings they have shared in the past and will share in the future.

The least they can do know I try the best they can to make sure Lucas won't be in pain, and that his body will be able to take the changes going on with his soul. Feed him, care for him, and stay with him.

In fact... Hikari hopes he'll never leave them. They're tired of the loneliness, of the shackles they have been put in by family and fate. Their love is highly selfish as well.
