nikki’s chest tightened so sharply it felt like her ribs might split. her hands were clammy, her stomach twisting into knots she couldn’t unknot. every time she looked at dominik, every little movement he made, it was like her heart was being squeezed and tugged in opposite directions. she wanted to run, to escape the ache that radiated from her chest down to her fingertips, but her feet stayed rooted, betraying her. the air between them was heavy, almost too thick to breathe, and she had to fight to keep her voice steady, to keep it from cracking. ❛❛ dominik, i can’t… i can’t pretend we can just be friends. every time you’re near it’s like my chest is being ripped open and stitched back together over and over, and it’s not fair to either of us to keep pretending it’s simple. it’s never been simple. so i’m saying it now, and i can’t take it back: we can’t be friends. not like this. not with the way you make me feel, not with the way my heart refuses to stop breaking around you. and i don’t wanna tiptoe, but i don’t wanna hide. ❜❜

he took a step closer, unbothered, slow, letting dom's words hang in the air between them like a challenge cody had no intention of backing down from. he could have laughed, could have brushed it off, but he chose not to. he chose to let it simmer. when he finally spoke, his voice was steady, cutting through the tension without needing to get loud. ❝ that is real cute, dom. ❞ he gave a small shake of his head, like he was almost impressed by the audacity.
