This is D013-02 HornBill's Hat:
It's a fine, cowboy-type hat, but those inset corners are fussy, and the motif isn't a square, but it could be a square if a row were repeated, yielding an only modestly comically-tall, "10-Gallon" version:
Yeehaw. However, the repeated row (9) can be repeated as many times as one wishes, and I could not resist indicating this in the pattern:
Naturally, I had to crochet this heretofore-hypothetical "taller hat" and it's… possible I may have flown too close to the sun this time:
If the content filter couldn't handle me at my weasel, I blush to imagine what it might see in this one!
"Do you ever crochet hats?" Do I ever!
It's possible that I will be noodling away at HornBill's Hideaway ("long lost" Dispatch from the summer) until we are all dead, but I did find this groovy, well-worn handbill for one of Chameleon's standing* gigs at the Hideaway (*he clutches the mic stand to perform).
What's more, this must have been HornBill's handbill, because scratched out on the back is this wordless, mixed-up, top-secret recipe for his World Famous Margaritas:
It took a minute to work out the rhinoceros hornbills' distinctive counting system, which gestures toward their fructivorous cognitive approach and four-toed feet:
But I can confirm that everything adds up!
All that said, I don't partake myself, and knowing now what else goes into one, I will pass on the Margarita thank you, HornBill!
Besides, it looks like Frogmouth Parent needs it:
Not washed yet, here, but I like Saxophone in its still-scruffy state.
I used #3 cotton thread (black), some DK-ish, very soft cotton yarn (gold) and a 3.75mm hook. That's a bit loose for the thread (label recommends 3.25) and a bit snug for the yarn (4.00-4.50, probably), but it all balances out nicely.
The fabric would be excellent for a washcloth — using heavy thread for one colour and a lighter-weight cotton yarn for the other does a lot to cut down drying time relative to standard "dishrag cotton," which works great but takes forever to dry (a potential issue in many climates). This has almost enough drape to make a pleasant garment, but for that I might go up one or two hook sizes.
I really liked @phoebeprufrock's coinage of "Contrast Mesh" for this border, which is one I've really slept on since floating it as the one-off in the very first collection. It's just a round of dc mesh (on back) in Colour B, locked down with a round of hdc mesh (through both colours), in Colour A. Here I like how the contrasting thread weights work to highlight the double mesh structure.

I believe the story here is that a Rhinoceros Hornbill, while visiting hornbill cousins in the Serengeti, recruited Flap-Neck Chameleon (who has long felt overlooked in his native habitat) to play Saxophone at HornBill's Tex-Mex jazz bar somewhere in the Indian Ocean, where Tawny Frogmouth sips nonalcoholic nightjar Margaritas (heads up its bugs) with her Dreadful Son, while he puzzles out a Secret Patch. (It's a draft cover of the next Dispatch.)
Tawny Frogmouths (P. strigoides), interlocking crochet, cotton (black) and wool (grey), pattern to follow in the upcoming Dispatch
