When Apollo saw Icarus, soaring in the sky- his form fluid and stark among the bright cerulean blue of the endless sky, do you think he tried to hold himself back? Do you think Apollo tried not to come too close to this human with wings of feather and wax- tried to stop him from coming too close? And when Icarus ended up flying higher and higher and higher until he could see Apollo’s chariot and himself, do you think he gasped at the beauty of the god? Do you think that Icarus, enraptured, didn’t realize how freedom felt until he felt the sun-kissed fingers of the sun god splayed against his collarbones and his soft lips against his own? When Apollo finally let go of his reverie to see his lover falling further and further away into the sea, do you think he chased him with his chariot- a sunset, all huge and burning and red and glorious, for all to witness? When Icarus began laughing as he fell, do you think he realized how much it would hurt later? Later, when the sea lapped, with salty lips, at the marks the wax had left, angry and red and splotchy, when Poseidon- or was it Neptune?- claimed him, do you think he knew it would hurt then? And do you think he felt the moonbeams caress his skin as a last farewell? Do you think he saw Artemis as Apollo and sought comfort in the veiled silver light for one last time? If all these questions are for naught, the one thing that I do know- is that Icarus fell, loving. And Apollo followed, soon after.
