Comics You Should Read: Young Avengers (namely YA Presents, Sidekicks, Family Matters)
GIST: A group of young teenagers are recruited by a boy from the future who may or may not turn into Kang the Conquer one of the Avengers most formidable foes. Like ever. Taking place after the Avengers break up in Disassembled, four teenage boys break out on the scene and oh my god they look like miniature Cap (well Bucky w/e), Thor, Hulk, and Iron Man. Of course they're not little mini mes (and thank goodness for that cloning never ends well for anyone) but the four boys, and two additional young ladies, all have varying connections to said Avengers. Well except for Kate Bishop, she joins cause she's just a badass like that. Together they form the Young Avengers much to the chagrin of the actual Avengers but who the hell cares what the adults think? Being a superhero is amazing, everyone should try it.
Why You Should Read It: You have the Runaways who don't want to be superheroes, the Avenger Academy kids who are like reformed kinda sorta superheroes, and then the YA kids who are superheroes. Well, works in progress. They're the most wholesome of the teen super bunches but nonetheless they have their problems, and angst, you can't BE a teenager without some angst. But the angst isn't melodramatic or over the top. Cassie mourns the loss of her father, Eli struggles with racism while wanting to proudly wear the America flag, Kate has no powers but that's hardly going to stop her, Teddy is half Kree and half Skrull and if you know anything about the Marvel universe you know that that's a rare combo, and finally Tommy and Billy are soul twins whatever that means. What's interesting is to see how these kids discover their origins, and then struggle with that discovery. How the adults try to stifle their potential "for their own good", but ultimately, can't. They want to be superheroes, and it's damn interesting to see them try.
