“The quality of our worship is determined by the deepness of our knowledge of who God is.” - Ptr. Bobot Bernardo (Legacy of the Gospel, 2013)
This is one of my favourite quotes. A good friend of mine brought this up in one of our Youth Gatherings in which we call Powerhouse.
This quote basically speaks for itself, I mean wow. The quality of the way we worship God and how we worship is based on how much we know God and who He is in our lives.
How can we worship someone we don’t know? I remember when I wasn’t quite familiar with what worship is and the purpose of it. I would literally just stand there singing words that absolutely had no meaning to me and have my hands linked with one another while everyone had their hands up. I thought to myself, “Okay, everyone is putting their hands up... I guess you should too?” And there I find myself trying to go along with it just because of everybody else surrounding me.
The reason being was because I didn’t know Christ on an intimate level. Sure I knew of Him, but why should I have settled for less? Why know of Christ when I actually had the chance of knowing who He is?
And here was the start where I began to read my bible daily. As I learned more about God and who He is, and what He did for me, I find myself in complete awe. Imagine, Jesus, this man who was made perfect by His Father humbled himself, so that we can have life? Jesus made himself nothing and took the form of a human so that he can walk among us, and mingle with the unworthy. Jesus didn’t come to save the righteous, but the lost.
As time progressed, I slowly began to understand that worship is an act of surrender. The point of worship is ridding yourself of pride, and humbling yourself down to the King.
During one of his worship songs, Israel Houghton says, “If we can take both hands and lift them high. This is not a charismatic Christian thing. This is the international sign for surrender. You don’t even have to speak English for somebody to understand both hands up, ‘I surrender... I surrender all.’”
I think he did an awesome job of speaking about what worship is when he was in the midst of worship. Check out the link to the song, Jesus Be The Centre ↠

Worship is not about us. It’s all about Jesus. My prayer is that we would be known as a generation that is not afraid to worship our King and who He is in our lives.
