By placing objects on top of the paper it blocks out the light leaving it white; water stops the process and fixes the image. As the paper dries the image become more clear and a richer plus tone.

Anna Atkins, The Bluest of Blues
We recently got our copy of The Bluest of Blues by Fiona Robinson, a biography about Anna Atkins and her incredible scientific collections that she made into permanent record using cynotypes, a type of photography using sun sensitive chemicals.
The book is gorgeous and inspired by the cynotypes themselves - all of them are blue because of how the chemicals work.
Highly recommend!
