listen the nerve the NERVE to resolve the plot ten minutes before the end of the episode and spend the rest focusing ON the mental turmoil that was only so briefly revealed

just !!!

i remember when i rewatched season 11, the way the show wore its heart on its sleeve and linked the season together with an overarching thread of hope actually felt incredibly brave

and i got that same feeling this episode

and i feel like some of the episodes of the past two seasons get a lot of flack because they’re simple or heavy-handed

but that is exactly what i am enjoying about the current writing

again instead of amping up the immortals plotline and taking longer to solve in a convoluted way to prove that the show is ~smart~ 

we instead stop. we come gently back down to earth to explicitly put onscreen in an honest and open way an experience more and more commonly felt but not often shared 

and i just

the bravery and the gall and i’m crying

and that said the plot was surprising! 

and not in heavy-handed ways

the entire plot hinged on 13 behaving aggressively in character and that getting flipped

i’d been noticing that her entire modus operandi when it comes to villains is to use their tools/weapons against them like she won’t bring a weapon to fight but if someone else does then it’s fair game

and they explicitly pointed that out! 

she walked into a trap that was built for her based on the character that’s been developed over the past season and a half! that is subversive and interesting and clever (at least to me)!

we also saw for the first time a villain who is truly more powerful than her

not equal but one step ahead, like the master, or equal but impossible, like ruth!doctor, but truly with greater powers 

that scene between her and nightmare guy was excellent and riveting bc we haven’t seen her in a situation like that before!

(i really appreciate that nightmare guy though was like “look what you’ve done. you’ve fucked up a perfectly good monkey. it’s got anxiety.”)

her not knowing how to respond to graham was relatable and in character and weirdly lovely

and i do feel like we’re building to a reckoning of some sort with 13 and her emotions bc during such an emotionally charged piece she was still so very contained

the animation!! what a lovely surprise!!

the only place i feel cheated is i want more timeless child content!!! more of 13′s fears!!! ok fine i bet it’s coming in the finale
