Ok, here is my thought since you bring it up… I like Amy/11 too, but I think Rory is dull because 75% of the time the KILL the poor guy. The writers are just being freaking lazy with his character. This season has disappointed me so far. :(
My biggest problem with Rory is just that his relationship with Amy (despite her flirting with the Doctor) is depicted as so effortlessly devoted and true love-y. It just doesn't seem that realistic to me. Especially the whole guarding-her-for-2000-years thing. Seriously? That calls for some extreme suspension of disbelief. I'd like to see more conflict between them beyond superficial bickering, because there's nothing really interesting about devotion and fidelity. He's a sweet, funny character in and of himself, but he's too perfect for me to be really invested in him.
I agree that killing him repeatedly is kind of a cheap and easy way to generate drama, although I've kind of liked this season so far. I don't think prospects are looking too good for him, but hopefully he'll get to do something interesting before he dies for real.
