spotted an absolute delight on my walk today, this is only the second time I've ever seen an adult botfly and the first time I was able to photograph one! I think this one is a rodent botfly in genus Cuterebra.

Botfly (Cuterebra sp.)

There seems to be a lot of fly love going around with these photos, so let me put your affections to the test. This rather large fly is a bot fly (Cuterebra sp.). I have no idyllic tales to tell of it controlling your garden pests or pollinating flowers. It is a parasite of small mammals and its exploits are like a horror movie. However, it is a brilliant giant insect that appears to mimic several species of large carpenter bees (Xylocopa sp.).
