Everybody of my generation has the same memory. We were twelve or thirteen or we were twenty-one, for that matter, and we were going to be veterinarians or we were, like Ringo, going to own a hairdresser’s parlor. We walked into the record store and saw the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. We thought together, “Life can be other than it has been.
Curtis White, “Remember John Lennon”
“Thoreau's disobedience is disobedience as refusal. I won't live in your world. I will live as if your world has ended, as indeed it deserves to end. I will live as if my gesture of refusing your world has destroyed it.” - Curtis White, “The spirit of disobedience: An invitation to resistance,” Harper’s Magazine, April 2006, p. 36

Curtis White. “We, Robots: Staying Human in the Age of Big Data.”
Proust advocated generosity and kindness before all else. But his native generosity became the acid of social criticism when his unflinching, unapologetic regard fell upon the cruelty of self-interest. He considered cruelty more than anything else just maddeningly, puzzlingly, and infinitely stupid... For the gentle Marcel, deliberate unkindness, especially when motivated by self-interest, hurt him and angered him more than anything else he could name.

Living in a World That Can't Be Fixed: Reimagining Counterculture Today by Curtis White My rating: 4 of 5 stars A thoughtful and thought-provoking book about "counterculture," what it means, and what it could mean. The notion expressed in the title that the world can't be fixed is an interesting one and there's a lot to this discussion to digest, but sometimes it seems a bit questioning and scattered without offering much in the ways of solutions. Interesting food for thought, though. View all my reviews
