Songs Of My Youth (Thanks, Mom And Dad).
My love affair with music began at a very young age. Â Actually, it began even earlier than that. Â My Mom would routinely play âThe Blue Danube Waltzâ when she was pregnant with me. Â Once I was born, the love affair took off. Â I was lucky. Â My parents played music all the time when I was growing up. Â I mean ALL THE TIME. Â We rarely watched television and until I was a teenager, I wasnât allowed to have my own music player. Â And my parents arenât the type to let the kids control the radio. Â So that means, even though I was born in the â80âs, they didnât tolerate a lot of the newer crap that was coming out when I was very young. I didnât even know who New Kids On The Block were until the late â90âs. Â All of this meant that I got a TON of exposure to the classics at a very, very young age. Â Unlike a lot of teenagers, I never had a âBeatles phaseâ â Iâve always loved them. Â And I really think the reason I never âwent punkâ was because my parents were playing me The Clash since before I can remember.
So, in continuation of my âreflectiveâ themed playlists, this week is focusing on a very small sample of the songs that I grew up on. Â And I mean VERY small. Â I could make an entire playlist of Marvin Gaye songs that my parents played for me â and Marvin Gaye isnât even on this list!! Â So I just had to pick some of the songs that come to mind when I think of my house growing up. Â I donât even remember learning these songs. Â Iâve just always known them. Â A conservative estimate is that Iâve heard each of these songs at least a thousand times. Some of them, probably even more than that. Â Iâm sure Iâve heard The Beatles and Bruce songs tens of thousands of times (Iâve been alive for a little more than 12,775 days. Â Itâs not unreasonable to assume that Iâve listened to certain songs by Bruce and The Beatles around once per day my entire life). Â Thatâs how frequently music was played in my house, and how much Iâve loved music from a very young age. Â
Want further proof that I loved music at a very young age? Â In her diary of my first year of life, my Mom wrote, when I was SEVEN WEEKS OLD (!!!!) that âhe does begin to fuss when the music stops, howeverâ.
