Time slows down. Lartessa lifts her rifle and aims. Bullets tear through Charity, he sees red blood spatter against the dark of night, and Michael knows with dreadful certainty that she’s dead-

“Funny thing about forgiveness,” Harry murmured, idly running a finger along the rim of his glass before taking a sip, “it’s not really a thing you can deserve. Kinda like mercy. That’s why it’s called forgiveness. You fuck up royally, then, if people are willing and able, they forgive you. It’s out of your hands.” He looked at Adam, studying the large man’s features. “Is it forgiveness you’re after? Or absolution?”

The time when Adam bothered to be bothered by such statements was long past, though most people weren’t nearly so forward with the questions.

  The unhinged laughter that broke from Leviathan’s mouth at first died down only after a full minute of awkward silence from the other, far beyond what would have constituted a basic misunderstanding.
