In typical cult settings, clothing and hairstyle are among the factors used to create and enforce conformity. Members frequently need to live with approved people in approved housing. Control of diet, as well as fasting, is often used. Of course, sexuality is strictly controlled and regulated by cult leadership. Typically, members are sleep deprived. Research has demonstrated that individuals on average require 7 to 9 hours of sleep. Members are typically financially exploited, manipulated, or made entirely dependent. Usually, group indoctrination and self-indoctrination sessions demand many hours of members’ lives. The internet serves as a 24/7 indoctrination tool for mind controllers to keep members fully committed. There is little non-group leisure time or vacation time away. Those in power distribute rewards for “good” behavior and punishments for “bad” behavior.

The group and its leaders oppose or deny mainstream research findings and what is accepted and taught at leading universities and research institutes. For example, they deny the overwhelming evidence for climate change and evolution. Instead, they share alternative ‘research’ and arguments from their own far less qualified and heavily biased sources, which would not stand up to rigorous external peer-review processes. Group leaders do this to keep members ignorant and suspicious of wider networks so that they can be more easily brainwashed and controlled.

Coercive control: Any pattern of behavior an abuser uses to dominate their partner in all areas of their life, limiting their freedom. This can include physical violence, but often, coercive control is more subtle and relates to things like isolation, stalking, gaslighting and intimidation. It is present in almost all cases of domestic abuse.
