The Nap
"Sleeping", by Ricardo Sárraga
One beautiful morning of May
the cozy hole where Nan lived
began shaking and rumbling
in boisterous thunder,
attempting to become
an avalanche of dust.
Annoyed, the mouse scurried out…
looked around…
It seemed like really loud snoring
coming from a patch of trees.
There Nan found Bower,
who had eaten a flower,
became her usual dragon self,
but fell asleep quickly, under a cozy shade.
Nan climbed her green scales
and stood on top of her belly,
looking somewhat stern.
“Hey, Bower!” She squeaked
at the top of her lungs.
“You’ll make my house cave in! Wake up!”
But Bower was dreaming a most curious dream.
A hand was stroking her chin.
She heard a pretty voice singing a song about melons.
It felt warm and smelled like crayons.
Nan was beside herself.
She tried to cover her friend with leaves,
to muffle up the noise,
But they fell as she breathed.
She tried to stuff her mouth with stones,
But they sprang back and hit her on the nose.
Finally, she gave up
and went to fetch some blue flowers
to get on Bower’s dream.
Cindy was at home,
playing with Tangerine, her doll,
brushing her hair and singing a beautiful song.
Suddenly, she heard Nan's pitiful squeak,
and whispered at her doll:
“Wake up, Tangerine,
you’ll make Nan’s house cave in.”
Bower woke up and looked at Nan,
Who was at her belly, trying to get down.
She smiled drowsily
and helped her to the ground.
“Nan, you’ll never believe the dream I had!
Cindy was there, only you weren’t her.
She was just a little girl. I was her doll,
Tangerine was my name.
It was all extremely rad.”
Nan only smiled and answered while they walked:
“Don’t worry, we’ll go back, pal.
I’ll be Cindy, you’ll be Tangerine.
Want to fly to the valley?
There we’ll take another nap!”
