Elliot’s pretty quiet in general, two grades behind Patton and Roman and one behind Logan and Thomas

so, Retribution? last day of Emile, Remy, Roman and Patton’s eighth grade, and Elliot’s sixth (also middle school)

talk about a kick in the stomach

they end up re-examining all kinds of stuff about themself/their gender/gender expression because people were shitty to Emile yeah, but only people Elliot already pretty much knew were assholes

Remy’s a little scary but everybody knows he doesn’t bully people, and then he, y’know, came out complete with violence so eleven-year-old Elliot has A Whole Host of things to think about now

and it’s not an overnight process by any means, but after a couple years and a lot of painfully awkward conversations with rest of the less-than-awesome Pennybacker clan they come out at school

and it goes... not amazing exactly but uneventful is better than hostile as far as Elliot’s concerned.

And if Elliot wore a skirt on the first day of freshman year with a little pronoun necklace and just never realized there was a pastel-clad sweetheart with a disapproving frown and a glaring moonshiner following them around giving the stink-eye to anybody who looked like they were gonna talk shit - well
