My headcanon for Viren was always that he grew up a houseboy to a royal-adjacent noble house and was made a lord by Harrow’s dad. The older staff of the household made sure he didn’t go hungry, but he’d be eating what they were eating, so it’d probably have been a lot of vegetables and grains. Sweets would’ve been a luxury he definitely didn’t get to enjoy that often, though I’m imagining one of the cooks in the kitchen sneaking this scruffy, grumpy, overly serious little 11-year-old a cookie or something and it’s giving me emotions. 

That said though.

Harrow and Viren probably pulled off some next-level jelly tart heists in their childhood. Once Viren actually starts learning magic there’s like, illusion spells in play, telekinetically jostling pans or knocking over a pot to distract the baker, there’s a map with escape routes that Viren drew by hand... it’s a whole big production. Then they’d always hide out on one of the castle roofs and just gorge on jelly tarts to celebrate their victory. 

They got caught once by one of Harrow’s tutors, sneaking back into the castle with a sack full of pastry. At first Viren was the only one getting berated over it, with the tutor assuming that he’d goaded the prince into going along with the whole scheme. Then Harrow grabbed Viren’s hand and loudly insisted that they stole the tarts together, that Viren was his friend, and that he’d accept punishment for the both of them. It didn’t--really work out that way, but Viren remembers that moment more vividly than the crownguard latrines he was made to spend the weekend scrubbing down.

As an adult, Viren doesn’t really eat that many sweets, but he doesn’t--really eat as much as he should in general. He skips out on mealtimes a lot, and Harrow or Claudia tend to bring him food. But he’s lucky enough to have a daughter that’s a fantastic baker, and he’ll never turn down one of her dark magic creme brulee. His tastes have shifted over time towards smaller, more elegant desserts. The kind of stuff that the family he’d served as a child would have enjoyed after their meals. 

There is something a little nostalgic about jelly tarts though, he’ll admit.

“Is this what your father would have wanted?” Kouji demanded, his leather jacket was accompanied with a deep blue hero outfit. Kouji watched as Ryuu got to his feet, hands bloodied with a recent kill. 

“Does it matter?” Came the rumble, black hair fell down Ryuu’s back. “He’s been dead for three years. What good will it do now?” His anger had snapped, the poor innocent had been in the Villain’s cross hairs. Ryuu gave a maniacal laugh and tilted his head back. “Nothing fucking matters anymore Kouji, I’m just making the most out of my life before I die.”

The hero shook his head and stepped back, eyes untrusting of the other. “You’ve changed, and not for the better Ry.” A frown was on his lips as Ryuu’s half crazed stare landed on him.

“When you mentally snap? Damn right you change. No one found me after I went missing. I got taken in by the Villains…” He raised his bloody right hand. “I learned how to control Kyonshi. I am going to hunt down anyone who stands in my path. If they try and stop me because UA doesn’t produce Villains? they’re going to die.”

“I am going to stop you.” Kouji stated firmly.

“No, you won’t.” Ryuu countered, smirking as he turned his body towards the other.

“Why?”

“Because, you wouldn’t hurt your brother. No matter how far gone they are.” He laughed again before walking away into an abandoned building. The crazed smile on his lips dying and a frown quickly replaced it. What did Kouji know… That hero knew nothing of his pain, his hate.

“In time child.” Came the quivering voice of his master, the elderly man placing a hand on Ryuu’s shoulder once he had stepped out of the shadows. “You will prove everyone wrong. They will bow before you, praising and asking for mercy. That friend of yours will underestimate you. Let that hate inside of you fester and grow more, use it against the masses.”

“Please!” Came a man’s scream, it echoed down an alleyway. It was only for two seconds that Ryuu had taken his eyes off a nomou, it was only then that the creature had vanished. The rookie villain pinched the bridge of his nose before hearing the scream. Red eyes were wide as his feet carried him towards the sounds of screaming. His grey hood covered most of his face in shadow, the mask on his lower face helped hide who he truly was. The UA student that went missing not three months ago. Black mist surrounded his right arm when he saw the creature pinning a civilian. Ryuu couldn’t stop the snarl that escaped his lips, soon launching himself at the creature, his flames activating. Left hand had reached out first, scorching and severely burning the creature, the nomou dropped the civilian in order to turn on Ryuu. His right hand was quickly placed on the creature’s head, watching as the eyes rolled back into it’s head. It’s life force coming out of it’s body; merging with the black mist surrounding the arm.

He pulled his arm back, the creature falling to the ground. The skin was a pale grey, it’s eyes were white and unseeing. No breaths were taken from the massive thing. Ryuu stepped back and looked at the rather stricken man, ignoring the disgusting hiss and collapse of the creatures body. Red eyes were illuminated underneath the shadow of his hood. 

“W-Who are you?” The civilian had stammered, his voice trembling with fear. Ryuu simply shook his hand, the black mist dissipating along with the flames on his left hand.
