hmmm been percolating over GDT's Frankenstein and the way disabled children are often treated by their parents. What do you do when the child you created requires more care and attention than you expected? When you find yourself frustrated and annoyed by the daily responsibility of taking care of a child you no longer want once the reality of what it takes to raise another human sets in? When they're not progressing as you think they should, as you wish they would? Once the initial joy and admiration wanes and all you're left with is someone who has no other in the world but YOU?
That coupled with the way society at large is ill-equipped and unwilling to recognize the humanity of disabled people. The way disabled people are often the victims of violence and instability. The way disabled people are viewed as undeserving of love and romance because they don't fit into the accepted/expected molds. How only other disabled people can truly understand and extend care and consideration, even if they're not struggling in exactly the same way.
"If we are monsters, let us be monsters together" etc. etc.

Watching Obsession as a late in life lesbian (aka has dated men in the past - men very much like Bear - and felt increasingly like I am performing and gradually lost sight of who I am) is certainly an experience.
It's about being projected onto and turned into a fantasy version of yourself - this manic pixie dream girl, an object instead of a fully realized person. It's about being stripped of everything that your partner supposedly liked and turned into a shell of yourself, forced to contort yourself into something that fits their wants and desires. It's about being with someone who actually doesn't get you at all, who has no real interest in your thoughts or feelings or goals. It's about waking up one day not knowing who the fuck you are or what the hell you're doing. It's about playing the picture perfect girlfriend and doing all the things you're supposed to do and it all feels like a costume. It's about feeling more and more depressed and out of control and not understanding why the other person doesn't see it. It's about being made out to be the villain or "crazy" when you finally break out of the cage you've been stuck in.
idk I have lots to say about this movie and also it made me so fucking uncomfortable. I haven't been this fucked up by a horror movie in awhile ha.
We had some absolute gems this year, so many that I decided to do a top 10 instead of a Top 5. There was a lot to go through but I've managed to narrow it down to the shows that truly impressed me. In no particular order:
1. Petrichor
This show was on my radar from the first teaser and it didn't disappoint! I've enjoyed seeing Engfa grow as an actor and she truly blossomed here as Tul. Na's performance was also FANTASTIC. It was nice to get a show that was more grounded, I appreciated the murder mystery and how it unfolded.
2. Clairebell
I've already yapped about this show plenty so I'll spare you another rambling post but, once again, it was everything I wanted and then some. The cinematography, the acting, the story - all phenomenal. The clear heart and care that each member of the team put into this made for one of the best GL series I've seen so far. All I can say is MORE SHOWS LIKE THIS PLEASE <3.
3. Queendom
This show was a sleeper hit for me! I initially wasn't going to watch it because I'm not a fan of the body swap trope and from the trailer/ promo images, I didn't expect this show to do anything I hadn't seen before. I was pleasantly surprised (big shoutout to @kennyomegasweave and @autisticbokutoenthusiast whose posts/reblogs are what finally pushed me to give this show a chance). The acting in this show was great and the chemistry hit harder than I expected. I also really appreciated how they handled the body swapping. This was a show I ended up powering through quickly without even realizing it, it was just that good!
4. Harmony Secret
Of course LMSY has to be on this list <3. Their chemistry is simply unmatched!!! This show was very fun and I appreciated the fact that Sonya and Lookmhee got to play different roles than they did in Affair (sometimes these pairs really get pigeonholed into staying within the same character archetype). I was also really excited to see LillyBelle! Their characters were just as interesting to me and I can't wait for their solo show to air. This one has solid pacing, great atmosphere, and only a handful of questionable story choices lol. Oh and shout-out to @pai-in-the-sky for coining the term 'lesbionage’. I'll never be able to get that out of my head lol.
5. Friendly Rivalry
This is another show I've yapped about enough but IT'S SO GOOD! I was excited to see a high-budget GL out of Korea and the success of this show makes me very hopeful that we'll see more soon. I love a good thriller and this show DELIVERED. So much so that I watched it three times, twice in a row lol. It's fast paced, engaging, and there's so much to reexamine upon rewatch.
6. Runaway
I've been itching for a horror series and was really happy when I saw the trailer for Runaway. This one definitely deserves far more attention! I don't know much about South Asian ghost folklore but I truly appreciated learning as I watched. The focus on karmic debt was really cool! I also enjoyed that they worked within their budget but still managed to make the spirits look interesting and creepy. Another plus for me was the costuming for Win and Boon. In most GLs, the outfits are pretty interchangeable and there's not much that sets characters apart. Here, you can tell that they really took time to make sure both Win and Boon have their own distinct style that fits their personalities.
7. The Secret of Girls
A Chinese mini-series that absolutely decimated me. This one is a quick watch since the episodes are shorter but it hits you hard. I won't spoil anything because you need to be as crushed as I was while watching it but it's definitely worth checking out.
8. Roller Coaster
Yet another show that had me intrigued from the teaser and lived up to expectations. I've been craving a messy dynamic in a GL and Roller Coaster gave me that. I love how this show was filmed and the acting was great. I'm looking forward to more from this studio.
9. Call Me By No Name
When I say I want toxic yuri, THIS IS WHAT I MEAN. I wish this show had a few more episodes but, other than that, it was great. The distinct visual style here was fun. I've also written more in-depth about this show, specifically the finale (check out my pinned post if you want!). Kotoha, get behind me, nobody understands you like I do. People claim to want rude, mean, nasty female characters until they actually get one 😤!!!! Anyway, watch this one lol. (Also, Megumi is an autistic princess to me~)
10. Fragrance of the First Flower S2
I was so worried this season would never be released because there were very few updates after the initial announcement. I was screaming, crying, and throwing up when it finally came to fruition lol. This show is so lovely, I can't even describe how much it means to me. I love that the show explores all the struggles of divorce, co-parenting, and trying to form a new romantic relationship in the midst of it all. I love that Ting Ting and Yi Ming had time apart to grow and that they had to learn how to be together again because they are different people now. (Added shoutout to Xiao Ning. I think she and Ting Ting should've hooked up at least once but I digress)
Honorable mention to Pluto which I didn't end up including in last year's lineup because it wasn't completed yet (I ended up being a bit iffy on the ending, which is what I anticipated) but that I felt a bit weird including here since the last episode aired in January. I'm not a fan of most of GMMTV's catalog but I really enjoy Namtan and Film and I do think this show is solid despite a few things I didn't like.
This is something new for me but I really want to highlight some of my fellow fic writers since I feel like there aren't many of us and I want to hype people up (thanks to @lugarn for encouraging me) <3! I'm going to attempt to do a post every month but that's likely too ambitious so maybe I'll stick with "whenever the mood strikes me".

When Loft went to Pure's room so they could make out and Pure said 'ONLY kissing" and Loft got really hot and bothered about it like...
THAT'S KINK. When people talk about consent in fandom, especially in fanfic, they never play around with it in a way that's clear but still absolutely sexy! You can make consent a part of the dynamic, you can make it engaging for the characters!! Pure is fully aware of how Loft enjoys being denied and made to wait, they've been playing around with this since they first met. Loft being told no and then negotiating for a time when a yes will be given or testing those boundaries in a fun and playful way is a great way to establish her personality and to show the difference in the relationship Pure has with her vs. Air. Pure feeds into that back and forth - even outside of a sexual element - and it's what I love about them. They make me a little crazy!!!

I am still thinking about Shasha constantly manhandling Gorya and never listening to her until she gets really pissed off like...she really has been fucking her way through all of her problems and now that it's not working, she's having an existential crisis
