Setup

1.      Separate out all the hoaxes and all the items. Shuffle them and put them face-down in the middle of the table.

2.      Shuffle all the other cards and put them face-down in another pile.

3.      Each player draws one card from the item/hoax pile.

4.      Whoever has the most paranormal experience goes first. [You may also choose by dice.]

5.      The first player gets a marker to indicate they roll first.

How to play a round

1.      Flip over the top card of the cryptid pile.

     a.      If it’s an event, do whatever the event says, then put it in the discard pile.

2.      If it’s a monster, any player may either play their item, or put their item on the bottom of the deck and draw a new one.

3.      Now the first player rolls two six-sided dice [unless the card says to roll only one die].

4.      That player gets the number of points indicated for their roll. [Example: Gashadokuro is face up. Player A rolls a 9. They add 3 points to their score.]

5.      If a player got a number in the highest range, they add that monster card to their stash after everyone has rolled. They don’t receive any points (yet).

a.      If multiple people rolled in the highest range, the monster goes to whoever rolled it first. All other players get 3 points.

6.      If no one put the monster in their stash, the card is put in the discard pile and the next one is flipped over.

7.      The turn marker is moved to the next player in play order.

8.      A counter is taken off any hoax that’s on the field.

Items

1.      As mentioned above, you may play the item from your hand.

2.      If an item says “fading” it stays on the field for a limited number of turns. Single use items go to the discard pile after being played.

3.      If an item says to add a number to your roll, your roll increases by that number. [Example:  Ahool is face up. Player B plays Net to add 2 to their roll. They roll a 7, but apply 2 to their roll to get a 9 instead and add Ahool to their stash.]

4.      If an item is a hoax, put it in front of an opponent of your choosing. It stays there for as long as specified, and negatively impacts that opponent.

Ending the game

1.      When there are no more cards in either the item or monster pile, the game ends.

2.      Each player gets a number of points equal to all ★ on all monsters in their pile.

@alyxeris Well... I’ve overhauled the card game. I’ll put the changed rules up next.

-   Fix hoaxes

One thing that needs to be done is to have some way for hoaxes to last only a few turns, as having them last all game is way unfair. Something similar to vanishing from MTG would work very well.

-   Fix first roller

Instead of one person always rolling first, there should be a marker for the first roller that always shifts to the next player at the beginning of a round. This would help out the above case, as hoaxes could now say “when the turn marker moves, remove a counter from ~”

-   Re-evaluate types

I want to really pin down types, bother creature and item.

Alien – What it says on the tin.

Water – Monsters that live in or are only seen near water

Flying – Monsters with wings. Not levitating ones, or UFOs.

Spirit – What it says on the tin.

Beast – Monsters that don’t fit in any of the above categories.

Stationary – Only ever seen in one area (Fresno Nightwalkers, Mothman, etc.)

Item – Self-explanatory.

Hoax – Item to be played on an opponent, to their dismay.

Fading – Sticks around for a limited number of turns.

Single-use – Goes away afterwards.

Event – In the cryptid deck. Does something, then goes away.

 -   Add star rating

Currently, each monster left over in a player’s stash nets them 5 points. However, I want to assign a star rating to monsters. Each ★ (alt + 9733) on a monster indicates the number of points gained at the end of the game. Famous monsters (Nessie, Bigfoot, etc.) are worth ★★★★★ (5 points). Monsters believed to be extinct or are simply much larger than their regular sizes (Thylacine, Oke Octopus, etc.) are worth ★★★★. Lesser known monsters and those found only in folklore are ★★★.
