"Crunch" : Text/Illustrations/Characters © Becky Welton 2018*
This comic has been a labour of love, so be gentle, haha.
This is a scene from "Crunch", a comedy/drama I've dabbled with on and off for nearly 10 years. It's a story told from the perspective of John Callander, a young semi-professional guitarist living in southern England in the mid-80s, who's fallen in love with his drummer/flatmate's new girlfriend. Hilarity and frustration ensues!
I drew two and a half issues of this many years ago but decided to start it again from scratch because I think I'm a slightly better storyteller and artist than I was in my late teens... I hope. 😂
Problem is, I've decided to write and draw it in a very erratic manner, with scenes completely out of order. I fully intend to arrange those scenes in an order that makes complete sense, honestly! 😁 In the meantime, I thought it would be fun to share the occasional scene that doesn't massively spoil any plot twists and this felt like a good starting point to introduce John, Colin and Cathy.
It took a bloody long time to put this together as I'm tediously old fashioned, drawing and colouring everything by hand with BrushMarkers/Copic Ciaos. Having said that, it was very rewarding to do this sort of work again - not to mention fun fun fun drawing rock related nonsense on t-shirts and posters in the background. 😁
Really hope you enjoy it, especially if like me, you're fond of characters with massive hair and painful tales of unrequited love. Even if you just take a couple of minutes to look at it, it would make me very happy. ☺
(Big thanks to my old pal @breakneckcomic who was kind enough to look at this scene in its infancy. 😁 Go and read his comic too, click that link!!)
(*Naturally I have no copyright when it comes to the lyrics to "Bloody Luxury" by Whitesnake, written by David Coverdale of course. Same goes for the likes of Rush, Zildjian, Y&T, Peter Gabriel, Iron Maiden, UFO, Gary Moore, Rainbow and Led Zeppelin who are all referenced here in visual form. I get no money from this comic whatsoever; it's just pure, unbridled love for rock - so no need to sue, yeah? ♥)
