There were few people who knew when his birthday was and fewer that seemed to even remember it. The king had forgotten entirely, or perhaps he didn’t care much about it, but in any case he did not mind so much that the day was peaceful. He was in his office, working through a stack of documents. It wasn’t incredibly exciting work, but any day when there was no crisis was a good one. His gaze lifted up when he saw Mary at the door frame. His brows furrowed, a little perplexed at her presence. “Mary, is there something wrong?” He had not been expecting to see her.
