The way Mercer talks about people really, really tells me a lot about him. I have other thoughts about this I'm gonna elaborate on later (particularly about Tamì'tey's own relationship with the couple, and other members of the Resistance.)
But Mercer... He really has no empathy or sympathy, he sees a carpenter wanting to protect a resource he works with as some kind of weakness of his character, rather than someone who is thoughtful about how his use of his medium can impact the world.
Using wood isn't inherently bad, it's when you clear-cut entire forests, especially ancient growth forests- that's bad. It's when you take more than what you need.
Mercer is a capitalist through and through, the man gives me hardcore "I would have voted Ronald Reagan if I were alive back then." vibes. He's the epitome of what greed does to a person. He cannot fathom why someone would throw away their contracts to protect a planet that's not their home, he cannot fathom that what they're doing on Pandora is wrong in the first place because to him, it's simply a place for resources and to continue business as usual for humanity. The RDA approaches Pandora with no consideration for how they impact the environment or who lives in it, and how that will affect themselves long term, ready to colonize and use this planet until-- I guess they move onto the next one and do the same to it. The RDA is ready to use Pandora and throw it away like they (and other mega corporations) did Earth.
He thinks he's a savior of humanity, and the entirety of Pandora is just an asset. If he can't find a use for you or use you for money somehow, you're worthless to Mercer and better off dead.
Edit to add: also his misogyny is showing hard here too, he literally talks about only Jin-young's career and skills and none of Dani's- just brushes her off entirely!!
I could go on but I'm gonna get back to doodling lol thanks for coming to my ted talk.
