I understand Don's Party better than David Williamson does, actually.
On a much lighter note, I headcanon Cooley as the only completely heterosexual man in the universe to have a fully functional gaydar. That's why he mocks Mack with a stereotypical gay lisp, because he can tell Mack likes men even when Mack doesn't realise this, and why he calls Simon a poofter (I headcanon Jody as his unwilling beard, and so the reason Jody is so excited by Mack's advances on her is she's not getting enough sexual stimulation from her husband, on account of he's secretly gay).
I wanna talk about the way I headcanon Mack's bisexuality. Because like. To me he has a preference for women. But he's also submissive and no, a man being submissive in bed isn't automatically ~queer~, but in his case it plays into his bisexuality and how he views his relationship with men. He's a bisexual with internalised homophobia and he therefore views his attraction to men as an extension of his submissiveness rather than something on its own. "I get hard ons for men sometimes because I'm a pathetic little cuck with weird sexual hang ups, not because I'm secretly a poofter" <- basically his reasoning.
Obviously I headcanon his main male crush to be Cooley, and his cuckolding and watching Cooley fuck his wife as his way of exploring his attraction to men in a way that he views as safer and more heterosexual. But secretly he sometimes wishes he was taking Ruth's place and being fucked by Cooley, as opposed to taking Cooley's place fucking Ruth.
And then like, he's played by Graham Kennedy and that informs the way I read his character, because of Kennedy himself saying he related to Mack. And Kennedy was a gay misogynist, his comedy often relied on sexist jokes at the expense of women he was faking attraction to, especially when he was using it as a means to bolster his closet. So Mack being a misogynistic is definitely partly just his being a man, especially his being a man in 1960s Australia, but I also imagine his sexualised misogynistic humour to be a cover as well. It's canon that he uses this as a cover for sexual submissiveness that he's ashamed of, why wouldn't it extend to his shame towards his attraction to men.
This is not to say sexist men are all secretly gay (or bi). It's oft times used as a cover for heterosexual misogyny, "oh he hates women, so he must not be attracted to them/must be attracted to men". But I don't think it's too far of a stretch to claim that Mack would use misogynistic humour partly to create an allusion of heterosexuality when he actually isn't straight. It's definitely not condoning his actions at all. Misogyny is bad regardless of who does it and why.
But when there are certain things Mack says and does that lend themselves well to viewing him as bisexual as opposed to straight, I think it's perfectly reasonable to contextualise his misogyny within that headcanon as well.
So anyway that's my Mack Don's Party 1976 bisexuality thesis. You're welcome.
