However, Harley is the JC member that Crono has had the strongest impact on, considering Crono was the catalyst for Harley finally breaking and subsequently destroying his own life.

Day 3 is taking a little longer than anticipated, so in the meantime, Day 4 - Inspiration! Here are four characters who inspired or continue to inspire Crono Sector’s character.

In order we have: Howard Payne (Speed), Winter Soldier (Marvel), Ultra Magnus and Shockwave (Transformers).

Funnily enough though, there aren’t many directly influencing characters that went into Crono’s creation. I struggled to come up with even these four. During the beginnings of the original (now defunct) Hell Week ttrpg campaign, I thought “I really want Black Mamba to have a second-in-command, somebody to be a penultimate boss before the (fakeout) Black Mamba fight.” I watched Speed shortly afterwards, and then Crono Sector just formed in my brain, appearing without warning or input.

The sun is at the perfect angle to shine through the trees and directly into my eyes. I remind myself that this is a good thing. It means it’ll be evening soon; The fourth evening spent in this forest and the end of the test.

Except…where is he? He should’ve been here by now. Dad agreed that he was going to- He should’ve shown up hours ago. What was the point of teaching me how to tell time based on the sun if he can’t even show up at the time he said-

A stick snaps at my five-o-clock and I jerk around, knife already drawn. My heart is in my throat and my eyes are wild as they search the dense woodland. There’s nothing there. It’s just another natural sound of the surroundings.

I turn back around. The handle of the knife is still clenched in my fist. I haven’t been able to put the thing down for hours, jumping at every single noise and strange shadow. It’s sloppy- childish- I know. I can hear Dad’s voice in my ear affirming as much. The jagged bark of the tree I’m huddled against is digging into my back. My breathing is too loud, too quick. Focus, Hodge. You are better than this.

I squeeze my eyes shut and attempt to breathe, slow, deep, and even. There’s a brief moment where my thoughts slow down enough for a new idea to worm its way inside of them. That this might be intentional. My eyes snap open and I quickly look southeast, where Dad said he would arrive after coming up from the road. No…He wouldn’t do that, right? Did…Did I fail somehow? I failed the test so now he’s just going to leave me here- just go home without me? He wouldn’t do that…he couldn’t…

Dread sits like a rock in my stomach, growing heavier by the second. A noise slips out between my teeth and I punch the ground in frustration as if that will accomplish anything.

I’ve done everything right, survived here on my own for four days, followed every lesson I’ve been taught. There is nothing I can do except wait - Why is he late - and…and if he doesn’t show by nightfall…I’ll have to make camp again. And keep waiting until he does.

I don’t have a choice but to wait. My only comfort is that slow trawl of the sun across the sky, the visible reminder that no matter what happens in this- this damn forest, the world will continue to spin. Time cannot be stopped. Time is the only absolute.

I press my back against the tree and grip the knife in my hand tighter, keeping alert for any more noise as I watch the direction my father is supposed to approach from.

Crono Sector is a man who believes he does not make mistakes. He very much does not extend this attitude towards others. Here is a list of his main criticisms with a variety of Hell Week characters.

Lady Luna: A naive wrecking ball who lacks direction.

Doctor Dalmatian: He is, to his credit, persistent. But he’s easily distracted. Would easily have gotten himself killed by now if it weren’t for his superpowers.

Gepetto: Fragile. Weak. Crono holds a particular disdain for those who aren’t willing to do what needs to be done.

Harley Hofelder: (Harley is fortunately spared, as he and Crono never met face to face)

Fester Jester: Loud and reckless to the point of being irritating. But at least she’s not Boogie.

Trencher: He’s crass and greedy. But he is able to do his job without too much mouthing off, so Crono tolerates him the most out of the members of the Villain Alliance.

Boogie Man: Obnoxious, flagrant, disrespectful and intolerable. He is always deliberately late to meetings, his wardrobe is an attention-hungry eyesore, and you’d think he lives to make Crono’s life difficult. Crono’s least favourite of the Alliance to interact with.

Miss Vile: Rude and has a loose understanding of caution.

Mr Venus: His ambition drives him to frequently overstep. Foolish to believe he ever has a chance of being one of the Alliance’s highest members.

Black Mamba: Very little, actually. Black Mamba is a man worthy of fear and respect. But at times his confidence borders on complacency…and his judgement may be impaired when it comes to Will. Ultimately, he is a smart man keeping the city in order, and Crono will remain doggedly loyal to him.

Will: His very presence within the Alliance is a threat. He cannot be trusted and he distracts Mamba. He’s disrespectful and he goes out of his way to irritate Crono as much as he can. Crono would forcibly remove him if Mamba hadn’t explicitly forbid him from doing so.

Went ahead and made a few more Pokemon teams for some of my OCs. In order (left to right) we have: Gepetto, Doctor Dalmatian, Lady Luna, Fester Jester, Crono Sector, and Bronco Clement

I’ve been playing Minecraft again recently, so of course that got me thinking about Crono playing it/playing video games in general.

This may not surprise anyone but Crono is not big into video games. His idea of recreational activities are very physical - DIY, exercise, active activities like the axe throwing I mentioned way back in Day 3. If he did play them more routinely, he’d likely go for games where you have to keep track of a lot of moving parts, e.g. Project Zomboid. Zomboid also gets extra points in that Crono’s preferred fiction genres are post apocalypse and monster horror/thrillers (werewolves, vampires, monster hunters, that kind of thing). I don’t think Minecraft is something he’d try of his own volition; Someone else, someone who’s capable of convincing him to try stuff out of his very rigid comfort zone, would have to get him to do it.

All that being said, if Crono did play Minecraft, you know he would be a mob hunter/miner. Full dwarf mode. He does not care about the monsters and he will get extremely good at combat in order to get resources and protect home base. This would be super beneficial for whoever else he’s playing with since it takes a major danger off their plate. I for one avoid combat in Minecraft as much as possible lol.

Crono’s own base/home starts out as a hole in a mountain (because he was told not to be out in the open at night, and making a hole to camp out in is the most efficient solution), but over time he’d develop it into a proper building and keep adding things, all against the side of the mountain. It’d kind of hit the same enjoyment he gets out of the renovations he makes to his own real house - and here, he gets way more freedom with what he can do.

Another info post today! I want to talk about what security means to Crono.

Tartarus Security is an incredibly successful security company located in New Salvation City. It was founded and remains run by Brett Hodgkins. The company’s motto is very straightforward: “Nothing escapes us.”

It is also how Hodgkins, as Crono Sector, is able to act and move about so freely - He has a literal backdoor into almost every major part of the city. An advantage that he is of course happy to lend to the rest of the Villain Alliance, and more importantly, to its leader, the Black Mamba.

Crono is very proud of his security company. It is incredibly important to him. I would dare say it is one of his most prized possessions. While other villains may see their day job as merely a cover for their activities, Crono holds both his responsibilities as Tartarus’ chief officer and his responsibilities as Crono Sector on equal standing, outright referring to them as his two jobs.

He hasn’t run into many issues r.e. his identity being found out. Despite being quite a large man whose main repertoire lies in explosives, Crono can be stealthy when he needs to be, in addition to the aforementioned benefits from his company being so widespread. There was once some investigation into a possible connection between Hodgkins and Crono Sector, but having thoroughly covered his tracks (and with some help from a certain snake), nothing conclusive was found.

Crono doesn’t reflect back on that first investigation fondly, and he came away from it with knowledge on how to improve and better hide what he’s doing, but the situation was likely to happen sooner or later. He was prepared for it.

The second time, however… Crono has a habit of making decisions for the Villain Alliance on behalf of Black Mamba. Their goals are usually aligned, but thinking he knows better than everyone else is one of Crono’s major flaws, even when it comes to someone he greatly respects. The one time, the only time, that Crono overstepped, Mamba made sure he knew it. Mamba pulled some strings and had the investigation into Tartarus Security reopened.

The process was far more brutal this time around, and it lasted much longer. Crono spent day after day making sure that evidence was buried, answering questions, keeping everything running, all without any help from the Alliance. This is a man who has every moment of the day planned out, and his entire schedule was in tatters. He was frustrated, rattled, and as things kept going, he was afraid he would lose something extremely precious to him.

It had been made very clear who was responsible for putting him in this position. Crono went back to Mamba, and out of desperation, did something he never does; He apologised. Took the blame and admitted an error in judgement. And Black Mamba made the whole investigation go away, just like that.
