Operation Goodwood was a British military offensive carried out during the Second World War between 18/20 July 1944. It formed part of the broader battle for Caen in Normandy, and was intended as a limited offensive southward from the Orne bridgehead. The primary objectives were to secure the remaining areas of Caen and to advance towards the strategically significant Bourguébus Ridge. Although Operation Goodwood failed to achieve its primary objective, it compelled the German command to retain substantial armoured formations opposite the British and Canadian forces on the eastern flank of the Normandy beachhead. This concentration of German strength proved significant, as it left the western sector more lightly defended, enabling Operation Cobra,the first US Army’s offensive launched on 25 July to exploit these weaknesses causing the collapse of the enemy defences in that sector.
