I think it's funny that dictionary.com lists whimsical and crotchety as synonyms when the definitions are kind of opposites of each other. Capricious is definitely the word that bridges that gap. It's not good or bad, it just is.
And while I'm on the subject of words. What really grinds my gears is when people say that they (or someone) are (is) over exaggerating. The actual definition out of the dictionary for exaggerate is "enlarged or altered beyond normal or due proportions." Simply, to overstate. So why would you say that you are over overstating?! It's redundant and annoying and I hate it.
