What about crocheting don't you approve of if you don;t mind me asking?
Firstly, crocheting is absolutely unnecessary. All hair will dread up, on its own, without the use of any tool or method to encourage its development. Why do something so pointless?
Secondly, crocheting is time consuming. I cannot believe how much time and energy some people devote to this method. My loose hairs have done incredible things all on their own, why waste my time forcing them to do things they don't want to do?
Thirdly, it is damaging. I don't care what anyone says, ever, if you honestly think this method won't damage your hair, you're an idiot. I tried just once, planed on doing my entire head, and just a few shoves through one dread told me enough. I could hear the hair ripping, feel it pulling, and the small part where I did crochet felt unnatural and damaged. Every push and pull of that hook through your poor dread is ripping up hairs inside.
Fourthly, it is unnatural, and looks funny. Look at dreads that have formed with out hooks, they are typically as big around as the section they derive from. Crocheted dreads are much smaller because they have been woven too tightly. This puts unnecessary strain on your hair, and especially on your roots if you dread the entire root --healthy dreads will have an inch or so of undread hair at the root.
Any one of these reasons would be enough to show me crocheting is bad, but four... I'm amazed people still think this is a viable and healthy method to use on your hair!
I found the most exciting and fun part of dreads was seeing what they would do over time. So it was a little messy, and yeah, there was a lot of loose and frizzy hair. Pull it back and get over your vanity.
Dreads teach patience, humility, respect for nature and the length of time needed to create wonderful things. Crocheting them takes all of that away and you learn nothing, you show you have little respect for the world creating itself around you.
