wanna see how fast i can establish a character as One Of The Gays?
In Gadlin, Crislieâd had a crush or two, but they were always fleeting and unreciprocated. Girls who ended up bad-mouthing her family behind her back. Boys who didnât want to be associated with her unruliness. There was too much of the world left unexplored for her to fuss over romance, anyway.
Itâs literally this easy to establish a character as LGBTQ+ in a story (in this case, you can see that Crislieâs romantically bi). It took three sentences and zero hassle. I donât get why more writers donât just casually do stuff like this.
Thought Iâd join in on the âcrappy powerpointâ meme and give you guys an actual introduction to Shadow Herald! Itâs a delightful story, and Iâm happy itâs so close to being published.
Itâs going to go live on May 20th. The official stuff is over here!
Ember Warrior Peek!
I'm supposed to be working on Frostbitten Prophet right now, but I had a flash of inspiration for the third book in the series instead, Ember Warrior. Have a bit of Mep accidentally meeting a goddess!
In the middle of the fountain was a statue of a woman, hewn out of celestial quartz. The quartz shimmered in blues, purples, and blacks. Glints of light danced off of it, like tiny stars. While the statueâs carved head was bald, there was a little hole in the top of her skull, and water flowed from it like hair.
The architecture was beautiful but alien to Meparik. Heâd never seen anything like it.
Suddenly, the statue moved. She cocked her head at him, water falling over her face. Her eyebrows and mouth furrowed in calm confusion. When he looked into her eyes, Meparik tasted petrichor and cold water, saw stars when he blinked, and felt an otherworldly comfort envelop him. He felt a strange urge to weep. As if heâd lost a close relative, and needed someone to confide in.
A voice issued from the statue, flowing like water. âWhy do you pray to me, child?â
Alluari was talking to him.
Crislie meets a god too, but it goes, uhhhh, a little more poorly than this, which is pretty par for the course for her.

âI just donât like wolves,â Meparik signed. âTheyâre scary.â
âNo theyâre not!â Crislie insisted, squishing the direwolfâs terrifying jowls between her hands. Daughiâs tongue lolled out of her mouth. âDoes this face look scary to you? Nuh-uh! Daughiâs as sweet as raspberry pie â come down from that tree and give her a pat.â
âLook at her teeth! She could eat me and a raspberry pie all in one bite!â
I got a little writerâs blocked yesterday and today, so I decided to sort through the âscrapsâ section at the end of Frostbitten Prophetâs manuscript. Finding lots of cute little gems like this.
(And yes, âDaughiâ is pronounced like âdoggieâ.)
I think one of the most appealing things about Shadow Herald for me is that itâs just... three kids learning that their hyperspecific ways of dealing with the world are valid, but donât work all the time.
Navaeli learns that she needs to play rough sometimes, that she has a right to self defense. Crislie learns that jumping thoughtlessly into action â into violence â can seriously put herself and her friends at risk. Meparik learns that subterfuge can only take him so far because some people genuinely want to help and actually talking about your problems is the first step towards addressing them.
Itâs just satisfying.
Stopping for a moment to appreciate a few good gay line from Ember Warrior (since Iâm insane and willing to work two books ahead in a series because I had a good idea or two that I needed to jot down);
Crislie kissed her gently. âThe Shadow Herald is struggling with the demands of her role, is she?â
âThe âShadow Heraldâ is all glamour and lies,â Navaeli muttered. âNavaeli likes bodily autonomy, good food, and pretty warriors to hold her.â
