So the other day I was thinking about sound design for “Creature Attack” from the musical Tarzan. I settled on a number of sound effects from Omnisphere, six individual sounds that, when coordinated just so... make for the perfect, creepy vibe. Mood being more important than melody in this one case.
The reason I went that route was because I didn’t have what the score called for: violin scrapes. So I did this other thing but then it started to bug me because I really thought I had violin scrapes. Or, at least, something like that.
A couple days later, I try this again, starting from scratch. This time, I tap into the Symphobia Library, pulling up orchestra effects. These would include hits, rips, crescendos, textures, and risers. Using the lowest C, C#, and D on the keyboard, I can instantly switch between the hits/rips, crescendos/textures, and risers.
Like I said before, I’m not sure this is the way I’m ultimately gonna go... but I do appreciate how straight-forwardly cinematic this is.
Especially when we get into the PUD Auditorium for full rehearsals... we’ll have a pretty good idea whether sound design’s the way to go, a more traditional Hitchcock approach, or something else I haven’t considered yet.
In the meantime, here’s another take on the Keyboard 2 part of “Creature Attack”...
