"School environments in Armenia have been limited insofar as they have allowed only for traditional teaching methods to be employed. In other words, students were primarily expected to listen and retain passive roles. The new environment envisioned by COAF aims to foster creativity and active individual participation among Armenia’s schoolchildren. Project-based learning, performing arts and interactive games are now becoming actual possibilities for this new generation of students."

Did you know that the PIL has a 1,500 square foot community makerspace in our basement? It's called the Creativity Lab!
Common Responses/Questions Include:
"A What?" (a community makerspace is a place where you can come use our awesome technology and equipment to create and produce basically anything you're passionate about)
"In a library?" (Yep, in our basement!)
"For us to use?" (Most definitely- all classes are open to teens, and in the spring we'll start offering teen-only classes about making scarves & accessories, song writing, and other stuff like that)
"Can I make an iPhone case?" (Definitely.)
We have 3D printers, sewing machines, a laser cutter/milling machine, professional sound recording equipment, a large-scale printer for posters and stuff like that, electronics equipment, woodworking equipment, and more laptops available for use than you can shake a stick at. AND it's open for TEEN MAKERS Open Lab every Wednesday (that's today!) from 2:30-5pm for kids and teens ages 11-18 to make some really, really, super duper cool stuff!
Plus, Sewing and Intro to 3D Classes are starting soon. Awesome. Sign Up Here!
MAKING REFLECTION
My experiences in Making include soldering, making a chair, programming, and working on our final project. Through the process of working on our final project, the mind controlled robot, I have learned to persist. There were times that nothing was working and we just wanted to give up as a whole team. We still continued to work and research as much as we could even when we didn’t know where we were heading. At first we thought that our project was very straight forward and it would be easy to get it done, but then we realized that it wasn’t like that at all. Our ideas developed and changed overtime. The mind controlled robot was completely different and more difficult than I thought. At the end the mind controlled worked out fine, even when we thought we were not going to finish on time.

Diagnostics Check
ALRIGHT, so. The Kinect connects (bahah) to my computer well enough. My computer reads it as a peripheral. I'm still working on getting the libraries that would let me actually USE the Kinect, but there are tutorials for that. I just need to set aside a little time to do so. I've also got Blender and Panda3D installed and running. I'm not super familiar with their interfaces, but i've watched some tutorials and plan on actually doing a little modeling.
So there's that! I think the next step will be getting the data from the Kinect to a format I can use. That update should be soon.
With some sources of inspiration!
