Xhibit2017: Need more info?
2017 will see us celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Xhibit. Founded by Kit Hammonds and Angela Robinson in 1997, Xhibit showcases the best emerging creatives from UAL. Xhibit is open to all current students and is selected by an expert panel of creative industry professionals.
With so much promotional material for this prestigious opportunity it can be easy to get confused! Weâve broken things down for you in this post to ensure your submission has what it takes đÂ
Those selected for Xhibit receive:
¡ A space in annual Xhibit exhibition
¡ A yearâs membership to the V&A
¡ A supporting professional development programme
 How it works:
Step 1 - Submit your work via the online form.
We ask you to upload one main image that is used in the first few rounds of the judging process. There is the opportunity to upload further images to support your submission but these wonât be looked at until much later in the judging process so donât rely on them, make that main image count! You can also provide a supporting statement about your work but again this wonât be looked at until much later in the judging process.
Step 2 â Bring your work to a âviewing dayâ.
Once submissions close there will be the opportunity for you to show your work in person to two of the judging panel at a college specific âviewing dayâ. This is so the panel can see your work first hand. PLEASE NOTE this is not compulsory and all work submitted will go to the judging day for the panel to look at. It is designed for those who feel their work may not be fairly represented by only one image.
Step 3 â The judging day.
The judging panel meet to review all of the submissions. In the first rounds they look at the main image submitted, leaving in images they want to know more about, disqualifying images they donât. Think Tinder swiping yes or no. This process continues until the judges have decided on their final line up. They will refer to additional images and supporting information in the later stages of the judging process.
And yes, thats right, no other than Grayson Perry will be on the panel! âŹď¸
 Step 4 â Notification.
Once the panel has selected the participants for Xhibit 2017 all applicants will be notified. If you are successful you will be told about the next steps. If you are unsuccessful we will provide information on additional opportunities from Arts SU.
 FAQs
I canât make one of the college âviewing daysâ what do I do?
Donât worry. All submissions will go through to the judging day. These are new for this year and are a trial to see if they help the judging process.
When are the college âviewing daysâ?
Wednesday 18th January â LCF
Thursday 19th January â Wimbledon
Friday 20th January â CSM
Tuesday 24th January â LCC
Wednesday 25th January â Chelsea
Thursday 26th January â Camberwell
Why do you only judge from one image in the first rounds?
Xhibit is a visual open submission exhibition and we believe that work in this context should speak for itself. The selected participants are chosen solely on the taste of the judging panel. By judging work this way it speeds up the selection process as the panel are only viewing images in the first rounds.
My work is moving image/sound. Can I apply?
Yes! All disciplines are encouraged to apply. If your work is moving image/sound or similar then please make this clear in your form and upload a still or an image that represents the work.
Why canât you provide feedback?
Due the amount of submissions we donât have the resources to provide feedback.
Top Tips for applying to Xhibit 2017:
Keep it simple. The panel wonât have seen your work before and donât need to hear your life story, just tell them what they need to know.
Make sure your one image is a killer one! Engaging, detailed and clear.
Do the admin. Make sure you check the terms and conditions and upload your files in the right format.
Terms and conditions:
1. Applicants can only enter one piece/body of work. If they enter more than one piece/body of work both submissions will be rejected.
2. All applicants must be a current UAL student.
3. Work must have been made whilst studying at UAL.
4. Your image file must be your name e.g GavinRamsey.jpg/ GavinRamsey2.jpg etc Images uploaded without being saved as your name wonât be accepted and your submission will be rejected.
5. Work must already exist and not be a proposal for finished work.
6. If you are selected to take part in Xhibit 2017 your work must be available from 18/04/2017 to 15/05/2017.
Due to the amount of submissions we receive we are unable to offer detailed feedback on your submission.
