A Create Appalachia Interdisciplinary Art & Making Experience

Featuring EMMY award winning  Creature Designer 

Jordu Schell  

Workshop fee: $350

Bring your creative skills and work under the direction of Jordu Schell to concept and create full-body creatures on live models in a weekend-long hands-on experience in the spirit of ScyFy’s “Face-Off”.

You will work in interdisciplinary design teams with the help of a cadre of specialists in costume construction and fabrication, body painting, hair and wig design, 3D printing and other skills over a fast-paced weekend sure to be full of great tips and tricks, and just plain creative fun!  Must be over 18 to participate

Schell Sculpture Studio has been providing concept art in the industry for over ten years, but owner and head designer Jordu Schell has been in the film and television industry since 1987. His talent as a designer and sculptor is world renowned, and his credits include: “Avatar”, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian”, “300”, “Hellboy”, “Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem”, “Men in Black”, “The Mist”, “Batman Returns”, “Edward Scissorhands”, “Alien: Resurrection”, “The X-Files Movie”, “Predator II”, “Galaxy Quest”, “Evolution”, “Babylon 5-The Series” (on which he designed an Emmy award-winning creature make-up and the first fully digital creature for a television series), and many more. His studio specializes in creature and character design, props, prototypes for toys and model kits, general special effects work, and creature design classes.

Optional dutch dinner and drinks the night before the workshop to give participants a chance to meet and mix with their fellow workshop colleagues and the facilitators.

Call for Entries: Tenth Annual National Juried Exhibition

(09/29/2015/Knoxville) – The Arts & Culture Alliance of Greater Knoxville announces a call for entries for its Tenth Annual National Juried Exhibition of 2016. The National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a national scale and display their work. Approximately 40-50 fine art works encompassing all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists will comprise the exhibition in the Balcony gallery of the beautifully-restored Emporium Center at 100 S. Gay Street from February 5-26, 2016. The Emporium is free and open to the public Monday-Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM, 1st & 3rd Sundays,3:30-6:30 PM, and other hours for special events.

The deadline for entries to be received is Sunday, December 6, 2015

Prizes include at least $1,000 in cash awards, and exhibiting artists will receive a catalog of the exhibition.

The call for entries is open to all artists. Entries must be original works completed within the last two years in the following categories: 2-D (painting, drawing, mixed media, printmaking, photography) and 3-D (sculpture of all media). Work may not have previously exhibited in any Alliance exhibition. The nonrefundable entry fee is $40 for up to three works ($25 for Arts & Culture Alliance members and students). Up to three additional entries may be submitted for $7/each ($5 for members/students).Samantha Andrews, Assistant Director of Experiential Learning at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville, will jury the exhibition. This is good news for all of us that need truly high speed internet to support our businesses. For Create Appalachia this is really significant since this is a necessary component of our business plan for the Arts at Work Center we are planning. If we are going to help accelerate and support new media businesses, the ability to transfer large files quickly is an absolute requirement. Katie Hoffman and Cher Cornett finally got to visit Pittsburgh for a long-awaited (and resceduled because of weather) appointment at the Bidwell Center to explore replication of a National Center for Art and Technology (NCAT). If we are successful in proving that our area is ready for it, we will be starting the first NCAT in the south. Stay tuned!

Create Appalachia was born in 2014, thanks to founder Cher Cornett’s vision and perseverance during her recent year-long sabbatical from East Tennessee State University. The new non-profit organization is dedicated to integrating arts and business  for the benefit or our region.

We’re inviting the region’s artist, designers, artisans, and makers to join Create Appalachia and help us build a thriving region through the arts.
