Sorry tumblr for giving it to bluesky first but... today I baked my family Crazy Cake recipe for my birthday cake.
If you follow B Dylan Hollis, you probably have seen the episode where he makes a depression-era chocolate cake that he calls "Wacky Cake." Crazy Cake and Wacky Cake have the same roots. The ingredients are the same, but the proportions and cook times are a bit different. This is my family's recipe.
Take 3 c flour, 2 c sugar, 2 tsp baking powder, 1/3 c cocoa powder and a pinch of salt and mix it together with a fork in an ungreased 9x13 rectangular cake pan.
Even out the batter, and using the back of a spoon, form one big well and two little wells in the mixture. In the big well, you'll add 3/4 c oil (I always substitute 1/2 cup of the oil for 1/2 cup of unsweetened applesauce as it helps keep the cake from getting too greasy). One smaller well should have 1 tsp of imitation vanilla extract and the other 2 tsp of vinegar.
Pour 2 cups of cold tap water over everything
Then stir until thoroughly mixed.
You should even be able to lick the spoon, no eggs!
Bake at 350 degrees F for 35-40 minutes, or until a tooth pick comes out clean.
Voila! Crazy Cake!
