A hat adds a dandified touch to even the most conservative outfit. It does have a practical dimension, of course, but really it’s on the same level as the tie and pocket square as signs of a style-conscious gentleman.

Whereas a lot of historical hat-makers closed shop when hats stopped being de rigueur, the French maker Crambes has held fast since 1946. They still produce lovely fedoras. I have sported their grey top of the line fedora for some weeks with great pleasure. I love its texture and finish (fingering it no end—who said adults didn’t need comforters?). The felt is made of rabbit, hare and cashmere wool, which gives a warm sheen and supple touch to that classic staple in menswear. It is sold under the Broswell brand name (Dakota is the name of the model). I also have their black fedora (rabbit felt), an equally remarkable hat with a more plunging visor (satin interior, natch).

I think I’ll give a try to their other models with intriguing colours (one is called “whisky”—which begs to be sampled).

There are many hat makers around but this is quality stuff. They’re difficult to get as they make no direct sale, so you need to know their network distribution (online: Traclet, Bon Chic Bon Genre; otherwise a few shops in Albi, Toulouse and Paris, including Le Bon Marché).
