That’s a pop culture reference that doesn’t have anything to do with anything we’re doing, but I was told to open with a pop culture reference, so it was either that or piling onto some new meme bandwagon.
So you may or may not notice in the coming days that you’re getting an update to Craft Check. You may or may not be asking yourself what’s different. We may or may be about to tell you right now.
First things first, we had this…bug. We’ll call it a bug. For now. But this bug as the kind of bug that broke literally the one thing our little app is supposed to do. So I guess it was more like one of the bugs from Starship Troopers. Big bug. Long story short, we fixed it.
Second things…second (Jesus Barrett, get it together…) since this bug required making a lot of backend changes, we took advantage and refactored much of how the app receives updates and displays information. See, we have big plans for Craft Check, and some of those plans exceeded what our previous infrastructure allowed. So we made new infrastructure. Easy to write, hard to do - which is why I do the writing, and the brains of our operation, Rudy, does the doing. So while things may look the same, underneath the hood it’s very, very different, and we’re starting to lay the groundwork for our long-term Craft Check goals.
Third, if you’re on iOS, you may notice that our User Interface has changed. Turns out that those same big plans needed a little more space to breathe. Don’t worry Android, we’ll get to you ASAP. There’s just some additional testing particular to Android devices that’s needed to ensure we don’t break everything on one or more handsets. Right now all you’ll see is a link to our blog, but in the near future we’re gonna start adding many of the features you’ve been asking for, and some that you didn’t even know you wanted.
Lastly, and possibly most importantly, we’d like to send a very special thank you to Starr Hill Brewery for their patience while we made these changes. We discovered this bug when the we tried to correct a mistake we’d made with their Craft Brewery status. Starr Hill kindly confirmed their status as a Craft Brewery, and politely stood by while we went through the effort to fix the bug that continued to incorrectly listed their brewery as non-craft. We’re very happy to say that they’re good people making great craft beer, and recommend you track down a couple of their beers - you won’t be disappointed.
So what’s next? Well the new UI may give you some hints. We’ll be testing and rolling out some new features over the coming months across both platforms, so you may see some nifty things pop up here and there. As always, let us know what you think.

ANNOUNCEMENT: (A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To) Craft Check Version 2.0!!
Is that a real Craft Beer or just a crafty imitation? Get Craft Check Version 2.0 right here and find out!
There’s something often said about good intentions. I’m not sure what it is, because our intentions tend to barely graze “chaotic neutral” on the best of days, but suffice to say that sometimes what you get isn’t exactly what you’d planned.Â
In our case, what we’d planned for Craft Check was monthly updates as we moved into the next quarter’s development cycle, culminating in a big, splashy release on Android, all of which netted us dozens of awards and a fleet of Ferraris apiece. What we got instead was over a year without updates of any kind (and zero Ferraris.) Those two outcomes are kind of different, regardless of how good our intentions were.
Now I wish we had a better explanation other than “we got busy on some other things” but the reality is that Rudy and I both simply got busy with some other things. Craft Check is a side project for both of us, and in the pursuit of continuing to stave off the haunting specter of homelessness, we both had to play a little life triage and prioritize some day-job-esque things. Unfortunately that means putting off serious work on Craft Check until we were both back to baseline.
That’s the bad news. The good news is that two months ago, we both decided that enough was enough, and we needed to get Craft Check back on track. The best news is that today we released a very new, very updated, and very free Craft Check 2.0!
Craft Check 2.0 is a culmination of a number of updates, primarily focused around technical and user interface improvements, plus a few highly-requested features.
First and foremost is the price: starting today, Craft Check is 100% free.Â
Not “free” like Candy Crush, Clash of Clans, or your neighbor’s “slightly” stained futon that’s been on the curb for a week - Craft Check 2.0 is 100% free and 100% functional, with no in-app purchases, advertising, or unlocks. Download and enjoy - it’s as simple as that.Â
We’re really excited and thrilled that so many people supported our first version, and we certainly hope that you got your 99 cents’ worth out of it. Now we want to make Craft Check available to as many people as possible in the craft beer community, so they can find and support craft breweries all across the country.
Secondly, a big problem that we wanted to solve was that of information speed. In the previous version (RIP 1.0.MonkeysDoingPeopleThings), the database was stored entirely in the app, and updating that database when new information broke required submitting a updated version to Apple. That was fine when big craft beer announcements were happening a couple times a year, but in this new craft brewery purchasing arms race, where craft breweries are being bought almost weekly, that left us and our users behind the news.
So now Craft Check sports background updates that check our database every so often and downloads changes as needed. On a good day we’ll read the news, update our database, and one minute later the update will be available for download. So not like electron phase state transition fast or quantum entanglement instant, but close enough for non spooky action at a distance work.
(Did we get too nerdy there? We might have gotten too nerdy there. Moving on.)
Another big feature addition actually comes directly from our users: ownership information on non craft beers.Â
To be honest, this was one of those features we’d never have thought of if you guys hadn’t told us you wanted it, and who are we to deny our legions of adoring and slightly tipsy fans. It required some reengineering to our database to accommodate, but it also opened up some additional possibilities that we’ll be debuting later this year (stay tuned!)Â
Long story short: now when you scan a non craft beer, instead of getting a message that just says “nope, not craft”, the response page will tell you “Nope not craft - because it’s owned by these guys.”
Last, we updated a couple things with our user interface. We really wanted to make sharing a more interesting and compelling experience, and we wanted to simultaneously make the entire app navigation process cleaner, smoother, and quicker. So now when you open Craft Check 2.0, you’ll notice that moving through the app is a lot easier, with scan given priority over search, and response times generally being a hell of a lot quicker.Â
If you decide to share your results on social media, you’ll notice that many sharing options automatically include the craft brewery’s social media information for tagging, @mentions, etc. We’re adding more and more of these as breweries confirm their official social media accounts, so those will continue to expand over the coming months. As always, if you see that we missed something or someone, let us know so we can fix it!
So that’s Craft Check 2.0: Background database updates. Cleaner interface. More information. Improved sharing. Basically everything we could do to make your Craft Check experience faster, better, and more accurate. Just as importantly, since AB-Inbev, MillerCoors, and Heineken seem to be purchasing every craft brewery they can get their hands on, everything we’ve (re)engineered ensures it’s easier for us to keep Craft Check up to date and accurate moving forward.
Craft Check is and has always been a passion project through and through. We love beer and craft beer in particular. We love being able to support the little guys and indie breweries whose dreams started in a garage or amongst friends and grew from there. We hate deceptive marketing and deliberate confusion, and will always strive to ensure our users are best informed about which is which.Â
So tl;dr: We’re back. We’re better than ever. We’re kinda tipsy right now and we love you all. Platonically. Don’t make it weird.
Oh, and PS: Android fans? Keep your calendars open this holiday season - we’ve got a present for you:
Press Release: Craft Check, The World’s Most Popular Craft Beer Verification App, Releases Revised Version 2.0, Drops Price To Free
Los Angeles, CA - October 23, 2015 - Craft Check, the world’s most popular craft beer verification app, released version 2.0 of the app to the iOS App Store, dropping the price to free while adding new features to ensure faster database updates, more efficient operation, non-craft beer ownership information, and a quicker answer to the question “Is this a real craft beer, or just a crafty imitation from a multinational beverage conglomerate?”
The biggest change is obviously the price - starting with version 2.0, Craft Check is now 100% free.
“We love supporting genuine craft breweries, and think it’s important to distinguish between what’s real craft beer and what’s multinational corporate beverage conglomerates marketing themselves as small craft breweries.” said Craft Check co-creator Barrett Garese. “So making Craft Check free lets every beer fan easily distinguish between what’s genuinely craft beer and what’s just a crafty imitation.”
Beyond making the app free, Craft Check 2.0 also boasts a number of new changes under the hood.
One of the biggest changes to the app is background database updates. Background updates allow each install to periodically sync with Craft Check’s database, and download any changes or additions. The instant news breaks - such as a craft brewery being bought by a larger multinational corporate beverage conglomerate - every Craft Check install will have access to the updated information so users can get the correct results. Background updates also allow Craft Check to add new breweries to the database as soon as they’re up and running, ensuring that as long as your phone has an internet connection, Craft Check will always be up to date.
Another prominent change in Craft Check 2.0 - one often requested from users - is ownership information for non craft beers. When users scan or search for a non craft beer, Craft Check 2.0 will now show additional information detailing which corporate beverage conglomerate owns or makes the beer.
Craft Check has also revamped its User Interface, streamlining the experience and ensuring that finding answers is quicker and easier than ever.
“I’m a big efficiency guy,” said Garese, “so streamlining it down to as few steps as possible was always a goal. Now it’s even easier to open Craft Check, answer your question, and get back to buying and enjoying your beer.”
Craft Check 2.0 also introduces better sharing options, ensuring users can connect and interact with the genuine craft breweries they love, on their social media platform of choice. Whenever available, Craft Check 2.0 will pull up social media account information to let users tag and highlight genuine craft breweries in their posts.
“Craft Check 2.0 is a huge step for us,” said Garese, “and it takes Craft Check from good to great. More importantly it lays the groundwork for where we want to go from here. We’ve got a lot of interesting ideas around continuing to inform consumers, cut through marketing confusion, enable discovery and experimentation of new beers, and connect our users with the craft breweries they love.”
Craft Check version 2.0 is available today in the iOS App store:Â https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/craft-check/id775598291
ABOUT CRAFT CHECK
Craft Check was created by Rudy Jahchan and Barrett Garese, and is the world’s most popular craft beer verification app. First released in 2014, Craft Check has since been featured in Fortune Magazine, NPR, Fast Company, Wired, Parade, and nearly a hundred beer, mobile app, and cool hunting blogs. Craft Check uses the Brewers Association’s definition of “American craft brewer” to help you distinguish the real craft breweries from the macrobrewed impostors - either by scanning the barcode or by searching the brewery name. The Brewers Association is a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit trade association whose purpose is to promote and protect American craft brewers, their beers and the community of brewing enthusiasts.
Rudy continues to stifle my versioning creativity, refusing to consider anything beyond “sequential numbers” for our release names. So this month we’re “proud” to announce Craft Check v1.0.3 (but not as proud as we would have been to announce Craft Check v1.0.MonkeysDoingPeopleThings.)
So you may have noticed that with our last release, there were certain things that were - and hang on here because I’m about to get pretty technical - “broken.” For those new to the tech world, “broken” is a term that denotes “functioning at less than optimal capability.” In this case, certain types of UPC codes - ironically, the kind that are most commonly used on MillerCoors products - scanned improperly about 20-30% of the time, which is just enough to ensure tracking them down is a major pain in the ass.
So we didn’t. We’ve got things to do here, people.
Instead of spending weeks on end trying to figure out why this thing happened sometimes but not always, we just replaced the scanning stack and now things work the way they should have the entire time. Easy, peasy, lemon squee - no. Stop fucking putting lemons in my beer. Limes are okay in certain circumstances. Oranges are never okay - it’s beer, not a fruit salad.
I guess what I’m trying to say is: when life gives you lemons (or oranges), keep them out my beer.
Release Notes:
Fixed bug where certain types of short width-impaired UPCs improperly scanned and thus returned an incorrect response, those naughty, naughty UPCs. Fixed the issue by changing the scanning stack to native iOS scanning API, and ensured the short width-impaired UPCs were appropriately scolded for their insolence.
Added or modified entries for a hundred new breweries, including some that contacted us asking why they weren’t in the database despite being authentic Craft Breweries. “Because you never call or write anymore,” we told them, before grudgingly adding them to the database and wondering whether they’re truly happy with that new beer social network or just acting that way on Facebook.
Finally got around to watching the How I Met Your Mother finale. It went okay.

Ya'll like craft beer? To check if you do, look in the mirror. If you have a 'creepy but cool' moustache, or one of those really ugly cycling caps, then you probably like craft beer. That's a pretty easy test. But what if you want to check if the beer you're getting from them corner store is real craft beer?
The Craft Check app let's you check if beer is really from an indie brewer with one easy scan. One fell swoop, my dude, and you'll know if that ish was made by a guy in overalls or a robot, uh, in overalls.
If you thought that the big boys wouldn’t try to take a slice of the craft beer pie, you’ve either, 1) underestimated how impactful the craft beer trend is, or 2) the savvy of big business. You honestly think these guys are going to just hand over their shares of the market to a high volume of small-time microbreweries? No shot. Famous microbreweries are being acquired on the daily by big-timers…
