Forgive my bad gifs, I'm not good at it. Anyway, aside from Wei Wuxian, no one in The Untamed is ever as stoked to see Lan Wangji as Lan Jingyi is.
I have a little headcanon about this that I would love to write into fic one day and it's this: I think that Jingyi reminds Lan Wangji a little bit of Wei Wuxian when he was that age. He's loud, brash, doesn't love rules, curses a lot, canonically gets into trouble a lot (in the CQL official post, Lan Wangji mentions that since Wei Ying had returned, Lan Jingyi hasn't had to copy the rules quite so often.)
So I think that Lan Wangji has a soft spot for Jingyi and he knows better than to repeat failed cycles. Harsh discipline only drove Wei Ying farther away (and honestly, drove Lan Wangji away from his clan as well,) and he's learned from the clan elders' past mistakes.
Maybe the rest of the Lan clan just couldn't deal with Jingyi, and the only one who could was Lan Wangji.
Isn't that too adorable? Maybe they have that "smart but troubled student" and "harsh but fair and surprisingly super popular teacher" thing going on.
I know Nie ZongHui did not exist in the novel and therefore did not exist in CQL and he only made his first appearance in Fatal Journey
But I can't believe CQL kept a badass like Nie ZongHui off screen! All those flashback episodes and no Nie ZongHui!? A bold yet frankly poor move! A Nie MingJue and Nie ZongHui team-up are taking out the Wen, Meng Yao, and the Yin Iron on that surprise attack like there is no chance for failure when there are no evil, possessive spirits in sight and your right-hand man is carrying two sabers (two sabers!)

ok. so i think itās unfair for you to think i follow the same folk you do even if i recommend them and that i read everything from them. while the first one is true, i do follow both of them, i donāt read everything from them. i follow a few hundred folk and itās just a lot to actually read everything so i just kinda look at my dash when i have bandwidth (i donāt have much lately) and see what i see.Ā if you could actually link me to things in teh future if you want my opinion, that would be greatly appreciated. iām not mad -- just pointing out different folk curate their tumblr experiences differently.Ā

tl;dr: my feelings havenāt changed. i donāt actually think my stance is that different. the point cyan made about "to use āsoulmateā as a catch-all translation for ē„å·± changes the axis upon which the relationship movesā is more or less what i was trying to say when i rambled about all the different ways i would translate soulmate depending on context. I did say āif I were to see it in a novel or show I was trying to translate, I may translate it differently each time.āĀ
also, the goals of our posts were different. cyan wants to vent and contemplate and hers is a salt post. i was toasting in a warm fuzzy spot of shan he hell and wanted to share the joy and love. so of course out answers are gonna sound different.do i agree the way the english speaking fandom uses soulmates misses the point? yup. am i gonna do something about it? nah. i am so tired right now from irl. fandom isnāt something i want to spend excess bandwidth on to make myself upset.Ā
i get cyanās ire. she is valid. I think cyanās solution to translate as some sort of knowing/to know works fine. it changes the key word from a noun to a verb but itās a nice solution if it works for her.Ā
cyan's point that the fandom misconstrues things and applies all the English connotations to Chinese concepts and then leans in on all the (inaccurate) english concepts while ignoring the layers of connotations of that original word is spot on. I don't think I'm quite as angry as cyan had managed to get over this one translation choice... But 1) you end up getting whiplash about different things (my annoyance lately is found family and yi-based family vs actual blood relationships and how fandom just throws familial terms around and remove all subtlety... and THEN get upset when you ship yi-based relationship folk because itās suddenly incest? uh... what?.... *breathes in* but iām not gonna make this a salt post....) 2) I agree it is an inherent problem with translation:Ā Ā remember there are often not 1:1 translations of words from one language to another. i still maintain there are times where the word soulmates work but zhiji lets you pretend itās never romantic if you need to. the lu xun line was not a romantic one, iirc. but iĀ have seen soulmate, the person who knows me, bosom friend, kindred spirit, etc and they are all valid. even āthis person SEES meā orĀ āsomeone who gets meā, āsomeone i vibe withā works depending on context. as i said in my post, i would translate zhiji on a case by case basis. and let me be a little cheeky: if we donāt really look at what weāre translating and picking the words on a case-by-case and contextual bases, we risk producing something that sounds like MTL.Ā Ā

I've been thinking for a few days about how Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian don't feel like men to me, and I think that's a lot of why I love them so much? Not saying they feel like women, they don't. They just feel like themselves, they don't strike me as "ah yeah, that's a man". Jiang Cheng feels like a man, so do Lan Xichen, Lan Qiren, Nie Mingjue, Wen Chao, and other older male figures. Not sure about Nie Huaisang, Meng Yao, Wen Ning.
It's weird to think of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian as men??? I can think they're males, because that's not about character, but men??? Laughable. Maybe it's cause they're very well written and they're not limited to a role to embody. They're complex and they grow tremendously throughout their story. But the other males aren't just caricatures either, so, why exactly does it feel like this?
It seems to me Lan Xichen should feel different too, but he doesn't. Most of the contrats I think lies in how much anger each character presents. Anger feels attached to manhood, and we see it a lot with most men in the story. Lan Xichen rarely ever gets angry though? Wei Wuxian gets angry more. But maybe it's what the anger is expressed towards, and how? With LZ and WY, it's not a threatening anger for me as a viewer, it's not scary. I'm either on their side, or laughing about it. But other men, there's usually anger followed by "oh, shit, what are they gonna do" and fear they might hurt someone else. Maybe it's because they're secondary characters? I don't know.
In any case, I love being able to appreciate men like LZ and WY. Maybe it's also cause they're gay š it helps. They're so uniquely themselves, it's wonderful.
