Ok so I’m doing an acting class ages 10 to 14, and I’m the oldest kid in the class. To give you a general idea of the people I’m working with there all around 12 and obsessed with Hamilton. But I have found one child who caught me by surprise.
We’re doing the Wizard of Oz, and today during auditions this child, who I call Toph, was auditioning for the Lion. Right before he goes up to perform “If only had the nerve” this boy pulls a NEWSIES HAT OUT OF HIS BACK POCKET. I’m alredy shook as it is, but it doesn’t end there. Toph throws out his arms in a very Spot Conlon esq manor and starts singing in an impeccable brooklyn accent.
He finishes with all of this flare, Newsie hat held against his chest, and I have never been so shook. I clap and he sits down next to me while the next girl auditions, and I can’t stop staring. After the girl finishes, I showed Toph my newsies bag and we spent the next hour whispering back and forth about newsies. To say the least, I made friend.
