Kafeiâs heart beat frantically at the sound of a knock on the door.
âC-â He cleared his throat, regaining his composure. âCome in.â
A gray haired man walked in with a cane. His scarred face seemed to young for his hair and when blue eyes met red the swallow from Kafeiâs throat could be heard miles away.
âLink?â He asked gently. âThatâs your name isnât it?â
Link looked up at him, his mouth opened and closed before he nodded.
âSt. John Smythe?âAnother nod.âOf New Hyrule.âFinally a word."Yes, Doc Keaton.âKafei bit his lip as he looked back down at his notes, adjusting his dark glasses to read what was written.âYouâre hear for a psych evaluation?âLink shook his head.âNo? You arenât?â Kafei flipped through his notes. âThis is what it says right here, sir.ââThere is nothing wrong with me, doc.â Even his accent hadnât changed.âThen why are you here?â Kafei asked closing his notes. He stood up and walked towards Link, resting on his desk behind him now.Linkâs eyebrows furrowed together in confusion.âI donât- I donât remember.âKafei cocked his head.âHow can you not remember? Your last checkup was week ago.ââWell I⌠I forget things sometimes. No big deal.âKafei sighed before removing his glasses, revealing his red eyes to Link.âDo you remember me?âLink stared at his face in question.âYouâre my new doctor. Iâve never met you before.âKafei winced before slowly hopping off his desk and crouching before Link, his gloved hand on the chair to balance himself.âYou mean you donât remember âThere is no revolutionâ?â He asked, impersonating Ivesâs gruff voice as best as he could. He laughed but composed himself when he watch Link dumbly shake his head. âYou⌠donât? How about sparring sessions?â Another shake of the head. âMalon?âLinkâs eyes brightened for a moment before dimming. âMy sister.âKafei nodded his head slowly. âUh⌠yes your⌠sister⌠Link, do you really not remember?â How could he think Malon was his sister? I knew they were raised together but I thought they-
Link looked around the room seeming out of focus for a second before his eyes rested on Kafei. A finger jabbed out at him.âExcuse, me. What are you doing in here?â He asked in confusion. âYouâre not supposed to be in here. Whereâs the doctor?!ââLink, I am the doctor. My name is Reynaldi Keaton but you once new me as Kafei Dotour. Does this not ring a bell?ââHelp!â He called loudly, a low wail flying through his lips. âHelp!â
Attendants rushed into the room and Kafei grimaced.âIs everything alright, doctor?â One of them asked.âHeâs⌠lost it,â Kafei sighed in pain before placing his glasses back onto his face. Link continued to wail. âWe may need to sedate him.â
The attendants nodded their head before leaving the room to procure a needle. They came back and worked together to hold down Link and place him on a gurney. Before wheeling him away Kafei grasped Linkâs hand tightly.âGood luck, old friend.â
Linkâs eyes rolled crazily before latching onto Kafeiâs. He smiled that goofy one Kafei knew and loved. He couldnât help but smile back because for just that moment he knew he was aware. Kafei watched as he was pulled away, wailing once more, and headed back towards his desk, trying his best to muffle the choked sobs. He mourned for another friend that he had failed.
