Having a lot of fun world-building County Variance again. I’ve been using Stars Without Number as a writing prompt generator to help me flesh out the Ensign system. So far, it’s helped me come up with some reallyyyy fun ideas to contextualize the County and its characterssss.
Austin Walker was right, divorce is a fucking incredible motivator for The Character to make bad decisions. I spent like a month trying to figure out how a character winds up in a position to make Some Really Questionable Life Choices with regards to fusing with an emergent AI consciousness in order to start a criminal empire and the answer, it turns out, is simple: One Bad Divorce.
Funny world-building idea: in far distant future some people have forgotten the archaic fantasy trope of elves. In the less but still quite far distant future when people did still remember elves, a bunch of people gene edited themselves to look like elves. Now, the depth of time has eroded the idea of elves while their genetic legacy remains. Now there’s just. elves. walking around a space station.
Re: the gladiatrix post i reblogged
I need to put underground girlfights in my cyberpunk setting. i need my massive, stoic combat-doll character’s rock bottom to be standing in a cage, half naked and visibly exhausted. I need some desperate, chromed to the gills girl trying climb this mountain of a woman and then just being plucked up and then being thrown so hard into the cage that the chain-links deform around her. Do you know how long it takes to exhaust someone whose muscles are composed of next-gen synthetic elastofibres? Whose skin is mostly been replaced carbon and titanium fibre nano-meshes? Whose cybernetics are powered by high capacity solid-state micro batteries that are designed for 336 hours of continuous field operations at maximum output?
How long has she been in that cage? How many girls were stupid and desperate enough to try and fight a starving wolfhound? How much longer before her batteries run dry and she collapses like a puppet with its strings cut?

Had a good idea for what I want to do with County Variance but. I realized last night that it would make writing any sex scenes involving one of the primary characters a little weird. The character is a gestalt consciousness composed of a sentient surveillance AI and a human spy who gets into Situations. My idea was to chronicle those situations from the perspective of the human spy’s niece as part of an academic book the niece is writing about surveillance and espionage. The gestalt consciousness is both a new person and a logical continuation of this woman’s aunt so I think she would feel weird writing about its sex life. But at the same time… I wanna maybe write some sex scenes… Whatever. I’ll figure it out. Sorry Sterling, you might wind up writing about your aunt’s sex life.
Aesthetic: impossibly fluid geometry, flowing red cloth, wide brimmed hats, mech suited guards in capes, plain chant over synthesized organ beats
Damn i fear i may have been cooking with this
Come visit beautiful County Variance! We have a little something for everyone, like
Vast and geometrically impossible gothic cathedrals
Corporate indentured servitude that preys on the most marginalized in society
Just a pretty normal automotive manufacturing facility
A sky scraper sized chunk of crystallized [???]
[NOTE TO SELF: look up what Mercy’s Crown is made of]
Nine foot tall vampire women with eyes that burn like suns and crowns of chromatic crystal embedded in their foreheads (okay, there’s only one of her, but that’s enough, yeah?)
Men in 18th century cosplay who run the government
Corruption and graft
Crushing economic inequality
Some trade unions. A few. Not enough, probably.
Probably fewer robots than you’d expect, but boy the ones we do have are impressive.
Look, robots are expensive and human labour is cheap.
Plus, these new ‘self-aware’ models really freak people out.
This isn’t the galactic core, we’re on the frontier out in the periphery here.
A lot of folks are still freaked out by the latest and greatest from the core circles, you know?
But, like I said, we do have some pretty phenomenal robots.
Like the one who lives in my apartment complex and sleeps with the cute girl across the hall from me.
She’s pretty nice, even if she’s taller than me and has a completely flat face plate that only emotes with those old school text based faces.
There’s also Mercy.
Mercy scares me, if I’m being honest.
Like, what is it?
The Communion folks call it an angel.
But from what I’ve heard, it’s mostly just a giant robot stuck in a crystal.
I think it’s a weapon.
Anyway, hopefully I’ll be long dead before it wakes up again.
[MANAGER’S NOTE: what the hell, mart? this is supposed to be ad copy, not your goddamn diary! get your shit together. also, lose the political commentary. that is NOT going to fly with the higher ups. are you TRYING to get yourself fired, you stupid asshole? Mercy’s love, mart, you’re giving me a fucking stress headache.]
